I found an iPhone while browsing at Target in a shopping cart in the electronics section. I didn't trust the store employees to return it so I just kept it on until someone called and then told them who I was and to get the original owner to call his own number and got it back to him. He was so relieved when I returned it to him that he tried giving me $50 and I told him "naw, don't worry about it, just make sure you do the same thing for someone else when you find an iphone as well"

That is the way to do it or simply take it to a store. The problem is that the OP is trying to break into the phone which has personal data. Like the rest, I don't see the need to do this and would hope that if a person was really interested in returning my phone they wouldn't try to get into my information. You did the right thing and my hat is off to you sir.

OP, just turn the phone in or move on. Trying to get information on how to breach the security of someones phone is right up there with hacking into a computer that isn't yours. Nobody here is going to help you.

anybody else wondering about the training Orthopedic surgeons are getting these days.

And yes TS you are correct most Iphone owners are burger flippers!

Always less complicated and in the long term more satisfying to do the right thing//

Wow. Just wow. This is the most judgemental, cynical and self serving bunch I have yet seen online. Freaking sad group you are. I have done nothing, repeat NOTHING, wrong yet y'all ganging up on me like freaking cowards quick to judge.

I bet some of you would take that iphone and run... Run fast but here you are in all your anonymous online glory trying to be heroes. Cowards!

I have returned the iphone to its' happy and gracious owner... I didnt need to keep it. I make more income in a week that some of you burger flippers will make in your miserable lifetimes.

Think before you judge.
$15,000*50 Years = $750,000. $750,000*52 weeks= $39,000,000

Yep. I believe it.

OP, you brought all of this onto yourself. Just the questions you asked would cast suspicion.

.

The person found an iphone

90% of the people out there would unlock the phone for their use or flip the phone for quick cash.

Don't blame this guy if he seems to be taking the phone, since many of you would do the same.

Assuming you ever crawl out of your refrigerator box home and are interviewing for a position of authority, please be sure to state the above when you are asked about your views on ethics in the workplace. Or society at large.

Wrong, like most people who work in the city he lives in NJ. Dude the cost for a hole in the wall apartment in NY is insane.

But if he earns 250k a year, he has the money for it. The OP is on a bus and there is no ATT store nearby? Passcode locks are there to prevent access to personal data. You want to access that personal data. If the OP doesn't have the phone anymore, he either sold it on CL or returned it hoping for a reward.

You've never tried to drive into the city up the Parkway heading to NY have you? The traffic blows you rest on the train ride. I'm also assuming you've never paid $10 just to cross the bridge to get into NY. Taking the bus makes sense especially when you're an accountant, like he is.

I can tell you that orthopaedic surgeons these days are often receiving very specific training on certain aspects of body. For example I know at least 3 orthos who won't touch ANYTHING other than a spine but they are damn good at it and no one questions it.

If you really wanna give it back, take out the SIM from the phone, call AT&T and read to them the number on the back of the SIM card.

Okay.... I have to throw my 2 cents in here... Maybe if he rides the bus.. Finding the right transportation to a store is a bit of a hassle... Just saying...

And if he wants to reset the phone... Even with a passcode.. It's not hard at all. You'll just lose everything. And generally you would not care about unless you want to acces emails and other information that may contain bank account information. But then there's no way to tell if the phone is being tracked. But at the same time all you'd have to do is put it I'm airplane mode. But in order to download the messages you'd have to have Internet... So again.. No way to tell.

If he is trying to keep the phone wouldn't he just restore it? I know you cant do this directly I'm iTunes. But I'm sure you other jailbreak fanatics know of a other way to restore an iPhone.

I'm not gonna say how.. Just cuz I don't wanna help him out just in case... But all I'm saying is I'm sure he can find out easily as well on how to restore, passwordedmor not.

And isnt that all you'd care about if you wanted to use itmfor yourself? Or even sell it? Cuz there's just know way to knowmif phone being tracked.

But whatever... This is just my 2 cents. Hope I added some sort of perspective!

He said he returned it to the owner. Now I'm curious, did the initial advice of waiting for the owner to call work? If so then that proves there was no reason to try and get into the phone. Cupertinorat care to enlighten us?

Man,

Maybe you did have the best intentions. No one on here will no that for sure. I think the reason you got ripped apart was both the wording for your original question (it didn't make it sound like your PRIMARY concern was returning a phone) and likely your name on here too...

Ask a question like this with the word "rat" in your name... doesn't bode well with most... since rats are.... well.... rats! I'm not saying you're one (let's be clear), I'm just saying it was perhaps a poor choice of screen name.

Anyhow. I'd be interested to know too... how in the end you got the phone back to the owner?

You were having a lot of trouble with "going out of your way" to fulfill your selfless gesture... yet somehow creating an account on mac rumours, and posting a thread was... easy? Time saving?

I didn't get it either. Read back over your posts... it DID seem like (more than anything) you were most concerned with unlocking the phone.

Sure.. you might have been able to access the contact information, but I mean... how does that really help you find the person? I don't have a landline. My only phone, is my iPhone. If I lost it... you couldn't call me to tell me you had it.

I tell you what though... if I DID lose it... you best bet I'd be calling it... like crazy, and having friends send it texts saying that it was lost, and all that stuff.

Regardless of whether or not your intention to unlock the person's phone was pure. Do you not understand how the owner of the phone, may have still found you going unlocking their iPhone a violation of their personal affairs? I mean, when I unlock my iPhone, I can access my facebook account, email etc... without entering any password information.

Again... not to say that it was YOUR intention to do so... but if I lost my phone, and it was unlocked, I'd feel exposed.

Crap way for anyone to feel... yeah?

Glad you got the phone back to the rightful owner. Like I said before... just wondering how that did come about in the end.

Since everybody here enjoys ganging up on the OP, im going to go the other way.

Look up something called "DFU mode" OP. Put the phone into this mode and you will be able to wipe it and do what you want with it.

Of course, in this scenario you will lose all chances of returning it to the original owner.

I leave it to you to do what you will. Everybody else, please ****. If he wants to return it, than he will wait for a callback like others have said. Otherwise, he now knows how to use it on his own. Nothing that anybody else says will change his intentions.

/thread.

Are you for real dude??? Found and stolen the same? LOL please pray explain to me how me finding something some douche lost is the same to stealing it? sorry, it isn't.

Hmm, saying it is your business what you do with it and then calling the person who lost it a "douche" isnt really making you look too sincere.

There are some good suggestions in here and some lame ones. I doubt the police cares that you found a phone and yes they have better things to do so i wouldnt go that route. Leave it on fprt a call or insert the sim in your phone to get numbers.....those will work if you really want to help. You wont be able to unlock it without erasing everything.

Seems others in here get jealous when somebody finds an iPhone. Personally i dont care what you do with it. Noble or otherwise.

Well, there is a way to unlock it. Many of you probably know the way just as I do but are reluctant to post in order to protect an original owner...

With that said, I have found 2 iphones in my lifetime 3g and 4. One was unprotected (3g) and 4 was a password lock. First one was easy - called the number which said 'mom' in the favorites and a very grateful young man showed up at my doorstep 2hrs later.

iphone4, was a bit tricky, because I did not have one myself at that point (do not hate me but I was a WM guy up until last fall...), so I just took the microsim out, slid perfectly into a sim slot (a lot of room around it, but contacts were pushing it against the top rail so it stayed in place) of my daughters LG and carefully put a battery in. It powered on. Called numbers on the list via MY phone, because SIM was de-activated already... Regardless, after few tries and getting nowhere (younger kids these days) I saw an entry under 'M' said MY NUMBER... DUH... So I called it, kid (mid 20s) answered, asked him if he lost a phone bla bla bla.... When he was picking it up I asked why he never tried to call his number to locate it, he said, that there are 1 in a million out there who actually would return it, thus he did not even bother, just went to an at&t store and paid a full price for a new replacement... right after my place he said his is going back to return it ...
Point is, I made their day for sure, for both guys (one with iphone 4 did not call his parents Mom and Dad..... I asked and he said it was under their first names????? whatever, however had an urge to slap him one). My daughters witnessed both returns and I think it is a good lesson for them too. There are some people who will not just grab and run.
Just this Wednesday I found an envelope with 5 1s in it while getting out of my company car. on the envelope it said field trip money Mrs. xxxxxxx. School was 200 yards away from a place I was parked and envelope was standing up to the curb; so it probably fell out when a parent or a child where getting out and blew against it.. I walked down the street to the office and gave it to the receptionist. I felt good.

Do the right thing man and you will feel good too! do not Private Message me as I will not tell you how to bypass it - you have plenty of suggestions already as to how to make it right.

I was wondering if I should bother responding after being dumped on by the holier than thou crowd here. I will have you know that I found the answer elsewhere and I was able to contact the person who lost the phone. He then came to my house and picked up his phone. I told him the story about how I posted on this forum and what a hostile crowd I encountered. He was thankful that I didnt listen and that I did what I did. If I had listened to some of the [members] here the poor fellow would still most likely be without his phone. Thanks but no thanks.

Great! Glad you were guilted into it. Did you tell him you called him a "douche" and other swell things on here?
cheers, and good job with the karma, in the end.

What a great cookie cutter ending. Why do I have trouble believing that actually happened? Even if it did who ******* cares about a bunch of guys on MR.com when they got there phone back.

why this high moral ground and accusations? i found it and the dude is lucky i'm trrying to help him/her. it's my business what i do with it no? i thought this forum was to discuss iphones and not give ethic lessons. Chill.

No, it's not "your business" what you do with someone else's phone. Return it to the ATT store, give it to the bus company's lost and found and stop trying to break into someone else's device. Your Mom should have taught you the ethics you need.
