If you look at the Nano Touch, I'd say the removal of the iPhone's round home button on the bottom of the screen is likely going to happen. It may be replaced by another analog button somewhere on the device side.

I think Apple has always been in love with the "smooth pebble in the stream" look to their devices. Sharp angles are overlooked for smooth, rounded corners. I was somewhat surprised to see the sharp, graduated edges between the iP4's top/bottom and the bezel this time around. That's really not in keeping with the rest of their product line.

If Apple makes a larger screen iPhone everybody's story will change.

Absolutely. My Vibrant is a 4" screen and even though it is only a 1/2" longer and a bit wider, next to my old iPhone it is a huge difference but i really would'nt want to go any bigger. I do think the Droid X is too big and my Vibrant is perhaps just a tad bigger than id like but is as big as id want to go.

Cant imagine having one of those Dell Streaks. That thing is huge!

All apple needs to do is move the front speaker and camera higher. A 4 inch screen will easily fit. All apps should scale fine to a new 1024x768 resolution since thats what the ipad has. Just a quick pic i edited to show.

I think a screen size increase would be a nightmare for some developers, especially for very little gain - is it really worth the extra few pixels of real estate that would be gained? How would the iPhone utilise them? What would the additional cost to user be?

browsing would be easier.

Yup.

If Steve Jobs says so, all the ones disagreeing right now will change their tune about it. Whatever Steve says, remember? Like playing a game of Simon says with a bunch of children who can't think for themselves. Some of these answers reminds of the outcry when Gizmodo leaked the iPhone 4 and how many people thought it was a fake and that it was too ugly to be an Apple product. Now that many of them have it, the story has changed as being so beautiful and the best looking iPhone eva!

I like the screen as is. The size of the phone is perfect and the screen is so clear.

Only reason for a bigger screen is to watch video and if you watch video on a phone any longer than a minute, you're strange.

I know phone manufacturers hype watching video, but it's totally stupid to me. Why would I watch something on a phone instead of a tv.

Exactly. Good example is the Porsche 911

Cars.....even the succesful ones change their look every few years. Apple will have to do something. Change the look if they dont want to make it bigger.

Sure the Fanboys will still buy it even if it isnt changed but they are losing some market share to Android and that is because, besides that it is a good platform, they have more models to choose from. IiPhone does very well but the same look and same screen size will eventually lose out. The name iPhone is fueling a lot of their sales.

How is it obsolete? Obsolete to me is having a bunch of buttons on the front of a device. I don't need a row of four buttons for home, back, menu, and search.

It is the thinnest smart phone in the world not round and has a front camera. I think people can tell the difference. Plus I don't want a bigger screen.

I think it's the perfect size as is

For developers it would be difficult to change their apps if a bigger screen was implemented. Stop complaining about the screen size. Like 0.2 inches is really going to make that big of a difference. It will create a lot of hassle with developers and most importantly the keyboard. I guess if you like the evo so much, get it....

MAYBE the home button will be rectangle shaped, and the top and bottom shortened

Move the home button to the side? Which side? Left? Right? Whichever side it's on will determine how many customers they piss off and alienate. Either 75%; the right handers or 25%; the lefties.

Hopefully you are not an industrial designer.

They don't need to move the home button to the side. Just make it smaller like they did on the iPod and move the ear speaker up a bit. Plenty off room to make a 4"screen. Some of you are making a big deal out of something you damn well know you love if they go to a bigger screen.

You are sooo trying to make your point with the fact that you don't like this idea

Your questions also illustrates the same with the volume/ Silence and sleep button. But no one complains

Heres what I believe will eventually happen with the home button.

It will be smaller. Maybe even a small rectangle. Top and bottom borders slims. The border on the sides of the front will be gone making the screen more seamless.

Someone posted a response to this post with a photo that shows what I mean with the top borders.

Not really look at what you are saying. Corvette, Porsche 911, VW Golf, Mustang, BMW 3 series, and a lot more are evolutionary in nature. They follow the 10% better rule. Same thing as Apple products, and Sony cameras. The iphone is a product that people don't mind paying a premium for it and that means they are doing everything right. I am no fanboy but when I see a product like lets say a Ford Taurus and every 2 to 3 years it is totally revamped I will walk away before dropping money on it. Same thing with android, every day their is a new revolutionary device that makes your 1 month old phone look like its an old 80 brick phone. Apple is a brilliant company.

You forgot to make the screen wider also... And thinking about the screen being all the way across the sides, it'll look a little weird.....

This is crap. First of all, none of those cars have been a top seller. And most have gone with some sort of change whether it be on the interior or the exterior only.
We aren't talking about revamping the iphone, just moving/resizing a button and giving it a little bigger screen. They made minor changes to the ip4 and look how owners are saying how beautiful it is eventhough the front looks the same and is a china doll.
And BTW, the Taurus has been a top selling car though I've never owned one. So has the Honda Accord which also has undergone big changes.

The fact that iPad apps already support 1024x768 doesn't help the fact that no iPhone apps are made to run at that resolution nor can they be scaled to it without distortion.

Exactly what I thought when I read about that.
Has anyone seen the Nokia N8 recently and noticed how stupid that left side oval home key is placed at the bottom of the device?!! yuck!

iPhone 4 is a GREAT design of art. What is all this junk about obselence and redesigning it. Larger screen doesn't necessarily mean better screen. I'd rather the higher resolution it already has along with:

Some form of LED notification (but done estethically; say out of the ring of the home button; similar to what the Nokia E71.
new chip based on ARM's Cortex A9 multi-core design or better yet TI's ARM Cortex A15 multi-core 1-1.5Ghz cpu.
improved antenna for those on AT&T's current junk of a network suffering.
stronger glass both front & rear; better polymer re-inforcement if necessary.

Very power efficient and very powerful.

I think 4" would be the absolute MOST I'd like to see in future iPhones. If anything, they should just go back to the old pre-retina size (3.5" I think it was?), but keep the same pixel density. I admit that the old screen, even if in reality is just a tad bigger, feels much larger. I played Angry Birds on my friend's 3GS today and noticed that it felt way better on a bigger screen.

Power users are really the only people who would appreciate a bigger screen.

My parents and sister barely use their iPhone 4's and to them the screen is huge.

I wish I had a bigger screen for games, AirDisplay, video watching, typing, web browsing, etc etc.

I don't think they will increase it for at least another generation. Currently apps display properly on all iPhone's, making different size screens would compromise that.
