Well, this already has happened...

lol 399 Euro is currently $615 US.
Why not just have someone in the states buy it and ship it and save $200

1. EUR 399,- includes a 20% value added tax.

2. Right now, not counting the iPhones sold today by T-Mobile, there are 5000 unlocked iPhones being used in Austria, and it will be quite some time until T-mobile will have had sold so many units...

3. The rates are much better than in other countries, but still higher than other local rates. Austria is a country with 100%+ mobile phone coverage: there are more phones around than people living here ! Thus, the rates can be lower, since the networks are used heavily...

I think the thing 'wrong' with Rogers network is the prices - I don't think Apple would want to get into bed with a company that charges as much as Rogers for data - it would make them look bad.

I'm in Ontario, and we need a serious re-write of the data cost rules in Canada! I was thinking of getting an unlocked iPhone, but I'd be too scared to turn it on because of the Rogers bill I would get the next month!

well, it would probably be the price of a new iPhone every month...

I think it's funny how some Canadians and Australians are defending their country here. I don't think that's necessary, everybody knows that they are rich and highly developed countries... why bother to explain it?

Canada F**king sucks...

we're not getting the iphone ever....

Actually, Canada rocks. Two private companies, one in the US (Apple) and one in Canada (Rogers) f**cking suck!

Um, because everyone wants to be like America?

Said in jest of course. No one could be silly enough to actually believe that.

I haven't defended my country Australia but I can see why people are doing it. Most people outside of the US and to some extent Europe think the rest of the world is a underdeveloped hole who probably couldn't afford the iphone in the first place. One poster was simply pointing out that the Australian economy was doing rather well, far better than the US or Europe-our dollar is almost 1- 1 against the US dollar now so iphones should be that much more affordable.

I too share the frustration of fellow Australians, not having the iphone yet because it won't work on any of our mobile networks.

The thing is that compared to the rest of the world it sounds like we actually have money to spend on iphones. Our interest rates have just been put UP, our unemployment is at its lowest rate in 34 years, we have labour and skilled shortages, there are lots of people with disposable incomes, Sydney was voted the worlds best city to live and work in. (by a UK based business climate group) The sub prime thing hasn't really hurt us.

Australia is booming so apple PLEASE PLEASE LET US HAVE THIS WONDERFUL PHONE OF YOURS P L E A S E.

I found this on a website which may persuade apple that there is a sustainable market here, we are not a backwater as most of you think.

"Australia is truly the engine room of the world-it has almost 15 - 20% of world wide production of alumina, industrial diamonds, iron ore and nickel.

There are also vast reserves of oil and natural gas; there are currently over over 60 oil and natural gas fields operating with more to follow.

In addition, of the worlds known reserves, Australia has around 40% of the uranium, over 50% of the Tantalum (an important mineral used in the production of electronic components), over 30 % of the zircon and over 25% of the rutile (both important industrial minerals).

It is no wonder that Australia is seen as the engine room not only of Asia but large parts of the world.

I can see why Australia hasn't had the iphone as it doesn't have 3G but Canada, just by the US , that IS a mystery.

My thoughts on the matter:

1) There is only 1 GSM network in Canada, and they currently charge exorbitant prices on data. Why change just because a new phone came on the market when you know your competition can't have it?

2) The name iPhone is currently trademarked by another country in Canada.

3) Canada is a decent, but not huge, market with a population < 40 million people.

Now, somewhere in the halls of Cupertino Apple has a CDMA version of the iPhone. If they released it in Canada the CDMA providers would be fighting over it.

Now I'm not Canadian, so I don't know exactly how bad Rogers is, but it would be interesting to see how many people would actually buy the iPhone if it was sold under Rogers in Canada.

Hi lads
So wanted to start a new topic but bit pissed now so cant figure out how to do it. Bit about iphone launch in ireland. It only happened cus the european headquarters for apple europe are in cork and its a bit embarrassing that its not here but in the UK. I know you think i'm joking but it is so true ask the admins here. They know more about new product launches before we do. but hey I'm not complaining too much cus i get a free iphone at the end of the month... but ya sadly if the store goes down I'll go here cus most of the time (not all of the time) der right. Love to know who gives MR thye info cus lets put it this way. Just last month we lrft 80 people go cus we taught it would be very quiet but then da new MB/P came out and even scott didn't know. Freaky but very embarrising. In the morning i'm saying i'm sorry sir there is no new mac comming from apple and then i get back from a cig break and F@*k's sake there is about 3 weeks of 74 rmas we have to go through. Just a taught? Is there anyone else here that works for apple? Inside joke? ASOM_RMA ZQCR tracer still open 72 hr rule? Sorry for that but anyone that works in apple AS would know what i'm on about.

lol australia has 3G....

I meant the iphone doesn't have 3G not Australia. But I wasn't clear..

Also why is everyone so sure apple watches these threads??

I really doubt it as I think they have better things to do than watch us wildly speculate about this and that and coming to the wrong conclusions. I really don't think we are THAT important to them-sorry..

I would rather they spend their resouces developing the 3G iphone for Australia.

Why ?: Austrian networks reap a huge profit from roaming fees, and are still fighting for customers. The lowest rates are about 3c per minute, whereas in Germany its 10c per minute !!

3c per minute? You must be talking about prepaid.. no company in Austria dares to charge 3c per minute :D

Thus said, I don't see many people shelling out EUR 55,- per month. With 4000 minutes, that's obviously a business plan, but the iPhone is not a business phone (yet).
