The second world was/is Communist Russia.

Not sure the term applies any more.

(Technically, first world was NATO aligned, Second World was Warsaw Pact, Third World was 'everyone else'. The rich/poor thing came later but is the common usage now, as the old definitions no longer work).

I always thought that the second world was the Americas... since from the perspective of the "first world" (Europe or perhaps the greater European continent inc Asia and North Africa) the Americas were the "New World", and later on "everyone else" was the third world.

But I see by Wikipedia, you are correct.

So which country will be next?
Of course this depends on legislation and negotiations, but maybe we could have a look at the order in which countries got their iTunes store, to see where apple's priorities are...

1. US
2. France, UK, Germany
3. Austria, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.
4. Canada
5. Ireland
6. Scandinavia and Switzerland
7. Japan
8. Australia
9. New Zealand

And those are the only countries that currently have an iTunes store I think...

Please retitled it to "How to get f*#@ by AT&T"

Those rate are so much better than what AT&T is doing here. Can't wait for their monopoly to stop. I switched from been happy with T-mobile (good services good rates) to AT&T only to get the iPhone (bad reception bad rates). Can't wait to get out of AT&T one day.

Yep. rogers sucks. so does telus, bell, etc. I pay like $35 a month on telus and i dont even have caller ID!!!

Huh. I live in northern Kentucky and pay about $5 a month for Skype with conference calls and video conferencing over broadband ($35/month). Why anyone uses a regular telco anymore is beyond me.

:D

Thanks! You learn something new everyday :)

Just reading about it on wikipedia now.

How about coming to MONTANA?

Apple and ATT, Montana and Wyoming is part of the contiguous United States of America.

We do exist, you have trophy homes here and professionals who would like to have the iPhone.....

lol 399 Euro is currently $615 US.
Why not just have someone in the states buy it and ship it and save $200

Import tax and lack of warranty. If it's bust then you'll have to ship it back to the US to get repaired and maybe pay import duty again on the replacement.

Jailbreak it and unlock it

You forgot about 'Buy it in the States', which I will do once v2 appears.

Not gonna work... 3G in the States is on the 850/1900MHz band, while I believe most of the rest of the world uses 1900/2100MHz.

at least some of your state get at&t

Vermont is the only state in the union that has ZERO At&T service or T mobile service so not even an unlocked iphone would work.

Canada has to be just around the corner right?

Maybe there will Apple is holding off until the launch of the Vancouver Apple Store in May. As there currently is no official Apple Store on the West Coast...

I too share the frustration of fellow Australians, not having the iphone yet because it won't work on any of our mobile networks.

The thing is that compared to the rest of the world it sounds like we actually have money to spend on iphones. Our interest rates have just been put UP, our unemployment is at its lowest rate in 34 years, we have labour and skilled shortages, there are lots of people with disposable incomes, Sydney was voted the worlds best city to live and work in. (by a UK based business climate group) The sub prime thing hasn't really hurt us.

Australia is booming so apple PLEASE PLEASE LET US HAVE THIS WONDERFUL PHONE OF YOURS P L E A S E.

I found this on a website which may persuade apple that there is a sustainable market here, we are not a backwater as most of you think.

"Australia is truly the engine room of the world-it has almost 15 - 20% of world wide production of alumina, industrial diamonds, iron ore and nickel.

There are also vast reserves of oil and natural gas; there are currently over over 60 oil and natural gas fields operating with more to follow.

In addition, of the worlds known reserves, Australia has around 40% of the uranium, over 50% of the Tantalum (an important mineral used in the production of electronic components), over 30 % of the zircon and over 25% of the rutile (both important industrial minerals).

It is no wonder that Australia is seen as the engine room not only of Asia but large parts of the world. "

I think that Canada is also very well off (we did get hit a bit by sub-prime) but we are exports of Huge number of Natural Resources. So we are in the same boat with you Australians - we have the money to buy but Apple is refusing to sell us the product.

here a report from austrian early launch (7am) at the t-mobile flagstore in vienna's biggest shoppign street

headline for the non-german speakers:
"only few came to the early morning launch of the iphone"

from the text: "only a handful of people stood in front of the store including journalists and photographers"

looks like the small german hype for it turned into even less when crossing the border..

Apple have a world wide warranty. As long as you don't jailbreak the device it doesn't matter where you bought it.

Don't get me wrong, 1000 Minutes and more is really nice, and mobile phone plans in general are quite cheap in Austria, but HOW is the 3GB data part better than unlimited?
I have always been annoyed about how Austria lags behind with international rates on data transfer, no matter if it's DSL or 3G.

Not sure how iTunes stores relate to mobile phone service agreements. You may as well compare with the rollout of Applestores:

1. US
2. Japan
3. Canada
4. UK
5. Italy

er, so far, that's it.
