Something mentioned upthread but not answered - will the apps I purchased for my iPod Touch 2G transfer to my new iPhone 3GS?

Also, I've been using this DVD converter program for years and it works great. It costs $39.95 but it has been worth it to me. I think they have a free trial download you can try. PQDVD

As long as the developers have updated them to be 3.0 compliant, you should be able to update them and they'll work fine on the GS. They should install the first time you sync.

just spend some quality time with it, you'll love it. Also check back on MacRumors as people here are usually helpful and friendly.

What is the point in owning the doc? i just plug mine in with the charger and no issues as all

so far i have ordered a

More noel set in blue
Switcheasy CapsuleRebel Arctic
Seido Innocase II Surface - Burgundy
Power Support Anti-Glare Film Set for iPhone 3G

contacts are synced with outlook and itunes is in order from my touch, so I guess I am set!

How?
The App Store didn't exist until launch day last year.

My bad. I forgot that I wasn't eligible to upgrade until 4 days after launch. It was like my own personal launch day.

Thanks for catching that and bringing me back to reality. lol

everyone keeps talking about getting a case right away for the phone. on the other hand a lot of people feel as though a case isn't necessary. I'm torn. Do i spend the money to protect the phone (which i won't even worry about the front) or just let it run naked?

I was torn as well, and as a dude who doesn't wear belt clips or carry a man-purse, I need something that fits in my front pocket. For the time being, I've ordered an Incipio Feather that has screen protectors AND will protect the back from scratches (and doesn't seem to get scratches itself). And it should have nearly the exact same profile that the phone currently has because the case is 1mm thick. I can try those out, and if I feel "need" more protection, I can always get another, bulkier and more protective case in the future.

So, I have a week of waiting until I get my first iPhone and I'm just wondering if there's anything I can/should do ahead of time.. Like, I already entered all my old contacts into address book so they could sync. I'm going on a trip on Saturday, so I don't think I'll have a lot of time to get it ready on Friday.

Thanks!

I really liked having the full-size photos for my contacts when they call, and I find the best way to get a crisp shot is to have it pre-cropped in iPhoto. So go through your iPhoto library now and crop a photograph of every person you want to have a photo for, and put it in a special album called "iPhoto contacts". Once you get your iPhone, and have stopped running around in circles of joy, open the album and for each photo, choose "Assign to contact."

You can tell itunes to sync over the mail settings so you are ready to go

Check to see if your email works on IMAP, makes it much easier when you have multiple devices

what if you don't want Mail to sync with your iPhone? will it do it automatically or is it something you have to specifically assign through iTunes?

speaking of iTunes, never thought to organize it until this thread. can't you choose certain playlists you want synced instead of syncing everything? I've been wondering about this for a while. hope someone has the answer!

i hope it's just like my ipods where i chose what music i want on my iphone, if any!

I'm in a similar boat. Thinking about a Gelaskin just for aesthetics as of now.

And I agree on the belt clip, but I listen to my iPod while I ride my bike a lot, and the belt clip is helpful for that--I take the iPod off as soon as I get where I'm going. But I'm not going to want to put my phone in a case every time I ride my bike (the phone is going to replace my iPod for daily use) and then take it out again when I get there.

So I think I'm going sans case.

If you have a large iTunes library (as in bigger than the iPhone you are getting), start deciding what you want to put on it. I have about 50GB of music which all fit on to my old iPod. When I got the 16GB 3G, I had a hard time deciding what to put on it. (Though, admittedly, I am also a HUGE music nerd.) I've found that Genius helps and I made a "must have" playlist with the music I "must have" at all times. :p

If you have a Mac, sort through your iCal & contact. Buy your accessories (shields, skins, cases, different earphones, etc). I have a new BSE waiting to be put on. Peruse the App Store for what you want in advance. And I'm thinking Apple is waiting to release all App updates until the 17th when 3.0 goes live.

Get some sleep in advance...because you'll be up all night playing with the new toy.

You don't have to sync the mail if you don't want to. I have my mail settings in but set for manual fetch so I can check it when I want (which also saves battery life).

And yes, you can choose the playlists you want to sync.

Why pay for that when Hand Brake is free and works great?

File storage on iPhone

Getting 3GS on pre-order. I'm curious if you can store general files on the iPhone? I know you can open certain email attachments but can you save the files somewhere to a folder, then like delete the email? Or even just transfer files like to a thumb drive?

first of all!

welcome to iphone :D we hope you enjoy it :)

first of all before you get your iphone. get protection  cause you could end up spending more on repairs! a £300-£500 phone needs to be kept safe ;) I recommend getting a case that suits your style :) just search the apple store, amazon, ebay and you'll find hundreds :) you can also get screen protectors. these are good! if you can get them on properlly, usually dust or hairs get on the screen when your trying to apply the film, and also air bubbles are a nuisance! basically just make your iphone safe :)

if your on mac, organize these apps: mail, address book, ical, itunes :) also tidy up your safari bookmarks, and iphoto albums (if you want to put pictures on your phone) :)

if your on pc (gimme a minute to think, been a while since i used one :D ) organise your itunes for music and videos. im not sure how you'd get pictures onto your iphone, you may be able to just select a folder to sync from when you put your iphone in. im not sure. im also not sure what windows programs itunes syncs with for calenders and address books. also you cannot use hotmail, live with mail on iphone. i suggest making a googlemail account :) and having your hotmail emails forwarded to the google account, you can set up the google account on the phone so you can read your hotmail emails.

once your all organized and up and running.
download some apps :D they are very fun & useful! just try out free apps. free apps often have "LITE" in them. i like to think of these as trail apps because you can get the full app for a price. if you want to buy an app, try the LITE version first if there is one, and READ the reviews :) cause im not sure if you can get a refund once you buy the apps.

also...

if you have ANY problems, just come back here and ask for help. it would be a pleasure to assist you and i'm sure everyone will do their best to help you enjoy your iphone :)

okay, good. I don't want to sync my Mail app from my MacBook, but I'll probably set up email on my iPhone. does that make sense? I'll probably do the manual fetch thing, too. thanks for mentioning that!

and, just to verify, I can choose to sync ONLY playlists and not entire library. right?

Hello everyone! I am planning on buying my very first iphone this evening.

I am going to the Apple Store, and I made a personal shopping appointment, I hope this means someone will be able to sit down and show me how to use it! I have been doing a lot of reading here, so I feel somewhat informed!

I do plan on buying screen protectors and the speck candyshell for it.

I will use Amex to buy after reading about the person who dropped theirs already!

I primarily use hotmail, but am thinking about switching over to gmail, as I believe this comes in so much more quickly. I also use outlook for my calendar. I saw to my surprise that hotmail will now fwd their mail to gmail, so switching should be ok....

any other hints and tips for a first time user? (am using the BB curve right now.)

thanks! :)
