For those of you that don't already know, the GM (or final release) version of 3.0 was leaked in the torrents. If you don't want to wait you can easily download it through torrents and install it on your phone. It's the exact same one that will be released next Wed.

How do you get it from torrents?

the blackberry is a joke, with the exception of email where it is still the clear winner of any device, it's a moribund os, glommed on to a mediocre phone desperately trying to stay relevant in a market that is increasingly leaving it behind. RIM is always several steps behind because they're a mobile email company trying to keep up with devices that are really becoming mobile computers.

they'll survive for a long time because they're so entrenched in government and fortune 500's, but at a consumer level i don't think they'll be much more than a bit player within 5-10 years.

Yes and no. I have used BBs and the iPhone extensively, as I am sure have many of you. Simply put, the iPhone is a joke for business use. And AT&T makes it even more so. The email/keyboard combo of the Blackberry still is significantly better than the iPhone's iteration of both. There currently is no particularly attractive alternative for RIM's core target corporate market. The BB is ubitquitous for a reason: it works. Certainly RIM will need to innovate and the BB UI will need to evolve. But the basic device is a proven winner.

As a consumer device, I agree, it does not seem that the BB has much of a future there. It is so easily outclassed by the iPhone that one wonders if RIM should even try. The iPhone just runs circles around it. But when it comes to business use, I am having a hard time seeing the iPhone catch RIM any time soon. And that's based on functionality, not just entrenchment.

Am I too paranoid? With this feature
- Apple knows constantly where you are (and it can pass this info on to anyone)
- Apple has constantly root access to your iPhone (or how do you think the data can be wiped?)

Cool feature, but then again...

That's what I thought too.....well....looks like mobilehacking is on the rise sooner or later. How can I protect myself from the big apple if I dont want that they MAYBE follow me or have root access on my iphone ? Funny times

Thanks AT&T...keep up to speed with those new, fancy features...that work on tons of other phones on your network.

This is the first time I've been disappointed with AT&T, until now they were on the ball(for my usage)

I agree completely. I've been on AT&T's side until now. Not offering MMS at launch (that they've known about for MONTHS)......and no mention of a date for teathering just ticks me off a bit. This is really going to hurt AT&T's image even further and is just going to make people switch once the exclusivity contract is finished.

thanks.

GM stands for Golden Master. It's the same version that will come out.

If you google it you can find a website to download the update from :p. I'd rather wait though, do it all through iTunes, but I don't have the money to buy it :(.

For once us European will have everything available on launch, MMS, Tethering...

It's really a shame for AT&T not to have it ready on time ! they are the main partner of Apple and can't even get thinks done on time

I've just seen how much O2 UK are going to charge for tethering: http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/internet.html

The MMS costs aren't too bad. They are included in your text message allowance at the rate of four text messages for each picture message. I can live with that.

I'm not too happy about the tethering charges though. I currently use a 3 USB dongle on PAYG with my Macbook and it suits me fine because sometimes I'll go for several months without using it, then just buy a month's worth when I need it at £10 for 1GB (which is plenty for me). I don't want to have to add to my monthly iPhone contract payments when I don't need it every month.

From my point of view that's the only bad thing to come out of yesterday's keynote. Everything else looks really good. Can't wait for 3.0, and I'm really keen to see the new TomTom app.

Question: does iPhone auto-fill sync (both ways) with the logins in your OS X Keychain? That would be great.

I too want to know if keychain is being used (or something similar) to protect credentials in Safari. If this is true, I'm assuming the locking of the device also locks (or re-encrypts) these credentials? If keychain or similar is being used, can this be synced with OS X.

Speaking of keychain, does anyone know how the credentials are stored/protected for mail accounts? It looks to me as if Exchange credentials are in /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DataAccess.plist while other accounts are in the /var/mobile/Library/Mail/Accounts.plist as a "uniqueID" and not labeled as a password. I'm assuming this has to be reversible encryption since not all iPhones require a key to unlock. Anyone know how these "uniqueID" are generated/decrypted?

No more ATT!

And this is why AT&T is the worst choice Apple could have gone with. They are back in the Stone Age with their pricing, and they can't get anything right. I'm deaf and they won't even offer me a plan with no minutes. I HAVE to pay for minutes that I'm not ever going to use. T-Mobile works with us and I was very happy with my Sidekick. Bottom line is, iPhone is too advanced to be with a crappy carrier like AT&T that is so far behind in the competition. My dad (who travels a lot) says that AT&T drops way more calls even than Verizon. I really hope AT&T either smartens up or goes out of business, leaving the iPhone available to a more advanced carrier like... T-Mobile??

iPhone 2.2.1 Benchmarks

Just for interest I repeated the SunSpider javascript tests on my iPhone 3G and did the ACID3 test too. I get the same result (126secs) for the SunSpider tests in airplane mode using wi-fi.

The ACID3 shows 74/100 - wonder if that'll improve with the new Safari in OS 3.0?

Someone posted a link where you don't have to buy minutes but I'm not sure if it's available or what that was. It was a couple days ago I think...

Word of caution on the MobileMe wipe. I tried it today, and it took me almost two hours to restore my phone.

The phone goes into a constant shut off mode where the only way to use it after the wipe is to put it in DFU mode and restore your firmware. Contrary to Apple's documentation, you can't just plug it back in to your computer and restore from backup.

My phone would boot to the Apple logo and shut off. Additionally, it took a few tries to restore the firmware as iTunes kept complaining about a failed restore.

i can't wait for this to be available.. but its too expensive!!

I am guessing this means you have an iPod touch. If you spent the money to get an iPod touch, $10 is not too much to as for all the new features. However, if you think it is the simple solution is to not upgrade.

I wouldn't have been able to afford it for a while either, and I didn't buy my iPod, got it for my birthday last year.

I love that Mobile Safari, running on a device that fits in my pocket destroys IE8 in the Acid 3 test.

Love it.

Hopefully the version in 3.0 will give us a decent boost in that score, if you're getting 126s then I presume we'll be seeing the same score of 43s that Apple showed us at the keynote. That's a pretty stunning boost in performance on the 3G, let alone the 15s the showed for the 3GS.

Two more days to go.

Apple AU are showing 17th as well so I presume it's going to be a store-by-store rollout. Yay!

If not, ah well, just have to wait till Thursday.

How can you afford music to fill up that iPod? Or was that a serious question?

Next we are going to see Snow Leopards successor being sold for $0.01 and people will be complaining at the price saying they can't afford it.
