Really hope Apple is including multi-tasking in this release.

The competition (Android & Windows) has surpassed Apple already.

I'm excited, although wondering if this will just apply to the iphone or to the ipad also.

Seems a little strange to introduce the ipad to that much fanfare and then introduce all kinds of new features a few days later, but that won't actually be available for users for months.

So, people will be like, "Wow, multitasking, but I have to live with my non-multitasking ipad for months though."

It seems a bit like a buzzkill on current ipad users, like they suddenly will have an inferior product, even though they just bought it.

Maybe a TAB key on the virtual keyboard? Native printing?

One thing that is almost definite = unified inbox for mail.app

Do you think they will mention the new hardware at all? Or will they only mention iPhone OS 4?

Maybe we will get some hints of what the new hardware will have, but we probably will not see any hardware till WWDC I am willing to bet.

If they offer 1) multi-tasking 2) better notification system and 3) some type of way I can see my upcoming appointments (w/o opening the calendar app), I will surely consider selling my nexus one and going back to the iPhone...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Hoping this comes to the ipad too

We probably won't see hints of new hardware until someone dings into the SDK files (like how Video-Recording was there; which *possibly* indicated a better camera and processor upgrade).

We won't see new hardware until WWDC. Even if the iPhone hardware spec has been internally finalized, lots can happen in 2-3 months (Ex. iPod touch having a camera than not upon release).

I could see them changing the name to iOS since it now covers 3 devices.

I have been thinking the same thing since they introduced the iPad and confirmed it would run iPhone OS. The OS is for 3 platforms now and should be called something else... not sure about iOS but it would be fitting I suppose... most likely, they will just keep calling it iPhone OS though to avoid confusing their largest user base (iPhone users).

iPhone OS 4.0 Preview Event Scheduled for This Thursday

Gizmodo reports that Apple has sent out media invitations for a preview event scheduled for this Thursday, April 8th, to show off iPhone OS 4.0. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Pacific Time in the Town Hall on Apple's Cupertino, California campus.

Reports of iPhone OS 4.0 features began to surface in January ahead of the iPad media event, but the software was not included in that presentation. At the time, claims of new multi-touch gesture support, multitasking, and a user interface refresh were making the rounds. Multitasking has been the focus of a number of subsequent reports, with a recent one noting that iPhone OS 4.0 will carry an implementation similar to that of Exposé in Mac OS X. Other rumored features include a unified inbox for multiple email accounts and the ability to place contacts directly on the home screen.

Evidence of iPhone OS 4.0 in testing appeared late last year, and the new operating system is presumed to be introduced alongside new iPhone hardware sometime in the June-July timeframe.

OS X Mobile
OS X Desktop

Simple enough.

looking forward to seeing what will be coming to my ipod touch!

Lets see what Apple bring to the smartphone table in iphone os 4. Good times ahead. :)

Really hope Apple is including multi-tasking in this release.

The competition (Android & Windows) has surpassed Apple already. The current iPhone OS feels very old and outdated.

Would it kill them to have a shortcut to turning on/off wifi and bluetooth?

I used to use bluetooth in my car, but it got to be too much of a hassle to turn it on/off, and if I leave it on, I don't have enough juice to use my iPhone all day as I am a heavy user.

Well with the iPad such a huge flop...I guess it's not surprising they are eager to change the subject as soon as possible!

....ok breathe in and out...it's a joke, no need to go apoplectic! :D

Do you think the 4.0 is a new phone or just a software update for the existing 3Gs?

Lets ALL pray for a new UI. God, knows, I don't want to see that same stale UI. Add some colors to it, make it look futuristic. I will be pissed if they only add backgrounds and keep everything looking the same.

I wonder if they might give us a glimpse of a prototype on the new iPhone
