Yes it is. I think Apple put the iPad out to meet deadlines and the software wasn't ready.

More than likely, completely incorrect.

They would have had to unveil both the new iPhone and the iPad simultaneously.

With this model, Apple unveiled their "revolutionary" device, free from the shadow of the new operating system and new hardware.

Everyone saying the iPhone can't handle multitasking because of the RAM might be interested to know that the Palm Pre and Pixi have 256, the bb bold 9000 and 9700 have 128, the droid has 256, the htc hero has 288, and the nexus one has 512. So yeah, unless you think the n1 is only one of that group that has successfully implemented multitasking, you might want to stop the ***** and moan fest you've got going here.

Not to mention that jailbroken 3gs' can easily handle a lot of apps at once, some people say 10 is no problem.

Totally agree. They don't want another iMac catastrophe either so I doubt they rushed anything to the market. As well as maintaining the proper press, this was the best way for Apple to release its product!

But they all run differents OSs, and will be more or less efficient with RAM. If one phone can multitask no problem with 128mb ram and another requires 256mb, it just means the one that needs 256mb is more of a RAM hog.

Am I the only one that could care less if they give us Multi-Tasking? I think everything works fine as it is. My 3GS is snappy enough to go from app to app in a couple seconds.

Remember that...
http://gizmodo.com/5200034/next-generation-iphone-may-have-fm-transmission-capabilities

Wouldn't tomorrow be the perfect moment to unveil iPhone/iPod's new ability to receive FM, instant record, tag songs (think iPod nano), buy them on iTunes directly OTA; but also receive RDS-based traffic info that'll feed Maps app and upcoming GPS nav apps; and allow iPod/iPhone to broadcast audio directly to the car stereo via FM (in countries where it is permitted)...

BTW does iPad also boast an FM receiver/transmitter like its older brother ?

Apart from that, 4.0 would be great if it could add:
- SMS delivery report
- SMS character count (think French accents... e.g. typing ê needs unicode encoding thus 1 SMS is counted every 70 characters!)
- SMS groups
- Wifi sync of iTunes
- Downloads podcasts over Wifi or 3G
- Screen rotation lock (via a gesture...)
- Enhanced search in contacts
- Use of iPad photo connection kit and keyboard accessories with iPhone/iPod touch
- Accessibility settings that don't put in negative colours the wallpaper
- native iChat running in background (instead of AIM third-part app...)
- tethering iPhone with iPad Wifi (dream on, man...)
- for fun, an "iPod with clickwheel" emulator with an on-screen clickwheel and teh ability to play Sonic, Pole Position or iPod Quiz (good times...)

best way to get some wanted functions implemented is
apple.com/feedback/

i do it all the time, i am sure if enough people request something it will be implemented
if you just write it here, only us will read it

I would be happy with just just the ability to switch between apps without having to close one, find the page with the other, tap to run it, etc. I was trying keynote and wanted to copy / paste between a email / webpage into the keynote and it is really a pain to go through all of those steps to copy multiple items over. Multitasking would be great for utilities that are small and need to run all the time, but fast app switching is a plus. Multiple copy / paste stack would also be nice.

I think that's exactly the point. The idea that 256MB is a crippling amount only makes sense in the context of modern desktop operating systems. Windows 7, OS X, and Ubuntu all would run terribly on 256MB. The same is not true of the iPhone OS.

You know, if they don't announce multi-taking tomorrow, this forum might just melt under the inferno of hate-filled posts.

I'm going to get a flame-retardant jacket and a sofa to watch from. Ooh, popcorn!

Ha. Even if they do announce multitasking, there will be no shortage of bitching, either because it will be limited in some way, or because it couldn't possibly support running more than one application in 256MB. After all, it's a fact that Final Cut Pro won't run on an iPad with a weather widget in the background!

I would like a way to exit out of a app or screen other than hitting the home button. I didn't notice this as a possible problem until I got my iPad but I hit that button way to much and i have used iPhones with worn out home buttons.

Even if it does have multi-tasking, some other feature will be invented to be the 'must-have' so everyone can continue moaning.

I still don't think we are going to see full-on multitasking, but I don't think it is really needed. I think allowing some API's to multitask will be enough and much more efficient than giving complete control to 3rd party apps. Then give the appearance of running multiple apps (like Exposé) at the same time, but still do it as a save state. There are some apps that need background processes, like pandora, chatting software or VOIP apps Those would be served by the updated "multitasking/background" API's. Most users just want the process to be simpler/faster to switch between apps. Most of the developers who haven't implemented things fully for doing the save states which would be a huge improvement. Multitasking shouldn't be used as a crutch for lazy developers.

Anyway here are some of the things I would like to see...

- Ability to address emails/sms to groups
- Ability to turn off/on auto rotate
- Unified inbox option
- Printing API
- WiFi syncing/backup
- Open up toggling WiFi/Bluetooth API's.
- Multitasking APIs (audio, network stack)
- Customizable lock screen (showing more info).
- Customizable backgrounds/themes
- Weather app icon to actually display correct temp!
- Improved app management (stacks, tiles, something...)
- Addition of Google turn-by-turn GPS (or apple's own)

very nice list of requests
i would add easy way to upload, manage pdf!!!!!
damn it

I could see them changing the name to iOS since it now covers 3 devices.

You kidding me? iOS is the name of an “Internet Operating System“ that I developed. 100% HTML and CSS.

If they do that it is going to give me a heart attack. Fat chance I'll come up with another great name like that.

And please don't quote and PM me new names.
