No need to watch the press conference. HDR as implemented by apple is a trendy name for exposure bracketing.

Not really.

Exposure bracketing will give you 3 photos.
HDR gives you 1.

I'd say that's a big enough difference to come up with a new name, wouldn't you?

it's not a new name. HDR has been around for years...

They are using it - because they are implementing the process used to create HDR - shooting 3 pictures (one over, one under and one properly exposed). These three photos are then blended to create a HDR.

I'm only saying that "HDR" is newer (and different) than "bracketing."

I think that's all accurate, isn't it? They're not the same is all I'm saying. Tarzanman thinks they are and I was disagreeing with that assesment.

Yeah - sorry. Misinterpreted what you wrote in thinking you were saying that Apple created a new word (like Retina Display) :)

It's all good...

Did you even watch the presentation? You must not have or you would have stopped saying that by now.

No. I'm a photographer. Some of you might be new to HDR but its a fad that came and went years ago in digital photography.

Typical iphone fan-boy. Steve Jobs introduces an (old) feature to an iDevice and suddenly YOU'RE the expert. lol, get a clue man.

Don't make assumptions about everyone posting in this thread. I've shot HDR's for about 10 years now.

I'm also a photographer except that I know that 3 photos are different from 1 photo.

If someone asked me to "bracket" the shots and I only gave them 1 photo, that client would be pissed. Has that ever worked out for you?

You still don't see the difference between getting 1 shot and 3 shots? Because that's a pretty big difference.

HDR is not new it's been using in movie special effects for years not just photos. Ever heard of HDR lighting? Guess not.

Perhaps I am missing a post somewhere, but I do not see a single person claiming HDR is a new thing.

Then you're a very ignorant one. You can bracket any number of exposures you want, not just '3' (as you've said twice already).

The iphone brackets the exposure via software and overlays the images. The entire reason you bracket in photography is to account for proper exposure when your sensor (or film) doesn't have the dynamic range to capture a scene properly.

This is what the ipod touch is doing. Besides NOT being revolutionary or new, I am willing to bet that the HDR on it is probably pretty poor because it is a cell phone camera with a horrible, tiny sensor.

Maybe you should learn what you're talking about before picking arguments on topics that Steve Jobs apparently gave you your education on.

Then you're a very ignorant one.

It's interesting that, despite all the words you've used, you still haven't disproven my point.

In fact, you don't even seem to be trying anymore. I guess insulting me is more fun than making a point, but if you're not even going to argue against me, what's the point of the insults?

Its nice to see a few people (jerks) hijack a thread in order to have a flame/argument about what something is or isn't.

Thanks guys.

I am one of many people that ARE NOT photographers. You know, those of us that outnumber those of you that are.
I for one like the "HDR" or whatever you think you want to call it. I believe that my PHONE and I will make use of it. A gimmick, or whatever you want to say it is, is fine with me. Its a phone. Not a $17000 camera.

Sheesh.

P.S. No one really cares how long you've been an expensive picture taker. :D

I'm not saying it's Pro quality - but the images I shot the other day with PRO HDR (with only two images) I think are pretty decent. Again - not Pro - but it's not poor either...
