That's too bad if the keyboard really is a little kludgy, but I personally never expected it to be up to par with a Crackberry. I'll bet it's not really all that bad, probably more a 7 on a scale of 10, if 10 is a Blackberry. Occasional email with friends is all I'm expecting, not constant messaging to correspond with business associates, so I expect it'll be just fine for my purposes.

Also, since the keyboard is all software-based, there is a lot of room for Apple to make improvements, such as adding a larger, landscape-orientation keyboard or whatever. And if Apple doesn't do it, you can be sure the mod community will!

So far we have had only two bad reviews of the keyboards. Both from anon. sources both from people/sites that like to snark off on apple.

I have no doubt the keyboard on the iphone will not be for everyone, but I also have no doubt that people will try it for two hours and immediately post to their "blogs" how much it sucks, apple sucks, apple is DOOOOOOmmmmed and how Windows Mobile is A#1.

I am betting it will take a whole week of use (apple even said a few days) before a person can make a fair judgement as to the quality of the keyboard and how much they think it is good or bad for them.

Hopefully the world is ending... ...the world of suck-tastic phones which currently rule the planet.

Hopefully..... I've been having all types of problems with my Treo, but I use it to type emails for work, access the internet, and MMS with work associates and friends, so it looks like the keyboard and lack of MMS support and slow network is a deal breaker for me on the iPhone.

The Blackberry Worldphone is looking good though ;)

enGadget's hatchet job

Poor boys, it must be terrible seeing the reactions, when their latest "iPod killer" sold about 3 copies. Anyway, the big complaint about the keyboard is that "you can't thumb type." For those who haven't acquired this odd Blackberry talent, the response is a big, "So what?"

Many other detractors are accusing the iPhone of not doing things that Microsoft has made possible in their buggy Windows Mobile phones.

No single product is right for everyone so I am glad it sounds like you got a set up that works. (palms and bb still seem to have the edge in enterprise for now.)

I own a BB, and almost bought a Treo last year (but beleived the apple rumors so I held out.) but after seeing the iphone, my eyes wince everytime they look at the interface of a treo or blackberry.

Ouch!

:D

I am anxiously awaiting Walt Mossberg's review of the iPhone, and also the price of voice/data plans. I hope both of these will be available at least a day prior to launch...

Stop the presses

EDGE is slow? Who'd have thought. Apple is going to catch a lot of flak for that one. It doesn't make sense to release a phone that makes intensive data use and doesn't support a fast data protocol. It would be hard for the iPhone to live up to the hype anyway, but by ignoring 3G and sticking with EDGE Apple really shot itself in the foot.

The Engadget piece was written by the same Ryan Block(head?) that wrote back in May the iPhone would be delayed till Oct. causing apple stock to tank for a bit.

All because he got "insider info" from a trusted source.

I don't buy any Apple rumor these bloggers post anymore..

Not to mention that the ONLY complaint of those bitter guys was that they couldnt type with TWO fingers...use just ONE and be happy...I do that even with my RAZR.

I have used a ton of smartphones with keypads and I think ppl will be surprised what they can learn to type on. For the longest time I used a Blackberry 7250 with the spaced out keyboard. I have very large fingers so when I considered switching to the Blackberry 8800 I was concerned this would be an issue since the 8800 keys effectively have NO spacing between them. After a day or so acclimating myself to the 8800 keyboard I am just as proficient with it. I have no doubt that the iPhone keyboard will take some time but will work just fine for me and my phone-based emails.

I think some people just need something to rant about.

Will I be getting an iPhone? Absolutely. My gf does M&A and has offered to buy me one next week when a deal they have approved closes. We both buy each other stuff with our bonuses but this one is timed especially well.

Worst case scenario I just hate it and have to sell it but I don't think that is going to happen. I am sick of going to lunch carrying my BB and my video iPod to listen to podcasts or catch a video.

I am stoked and cannot wait.

Cingular.com

The cingular.com site is down.

Presumably finally they will have iPhone on the home page.. :)

With all this hype, the iPhone could very well fall flat on its feet with buyers expecting lots, but in reality, the iPhone delivers less - purely based upon the hype and unrealistic expectations.

There are RUMORS that the chipset is already 3G capable and could be activated via a software release. I can tell you that this is POSSIBLE but have NO idea if it is true.

I have been using EDGE on my BB and it works just fine for me. Right now the issues associated with 3G are not worth it and I think Steves' strategy is a sound one. When 3G is ready and can provide the experience we expect, the iPhone will have it.

The staff at Engadget would rather bite their own asses before posting anything positive about anything Apple-related...

A negative article about the iPhone ( or any Apple product ) doesn't mean its inaccurate!!!!

Engadget doesn't appear to be too Mac 'unfriendly'...

3rd party keyboard?

If typing is actually all that difficult it seems like a great opportunity for an iKeyboard. Make it about 1mm thick and have it snap on/off--doubles as a screen protector.

I think there will be some surprise for the monthly plan...why else wouldn't they have released that info?

Buy a $400 or $500 phone...don't pay anything for two years. :D

Someone please explain why the obvious solution has not been implemented: the keyboard gets larger when you rotate to landscape mode. This has occurred to everybody but Apple, it seems.

I agree, kinda...

Well, 3g is a frequency issue and that information would have already had to have been approved by the FCC or Apple is going to be in a LOT of trouble.

But I agree with you about EDGE. I remember when I got Windows Live Search with the arial maps and stuff, and it is optimized for EDGE and works really well on my HTC. I wouldn't be surprised if it works just fine. Anyway, 3g on a device with a slow processor is nightmarish.
