that picture is pretty old guys. I use Iris scan at Schiphol at least twice a month with their Privium service. Excellent and really fast!

Schiphzl AirPort?

Where is that?

I do know Schiphol, thats Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This is the newest low-cost sister airport in Poland I guess ;)

No - please make iris scanning an additional form of security NOT a replacement for fingerprints.

I can't see how iris scans would be faster or more convenient. More secure? I can see that, and for that reason, I'm with you... It should be in addition to, not the only means, of unlocking the iPhone.

Yes your right but only in terms of how Samsung have implemented Iris scanning on a mobile. However let us look back to before the iPhone 5S was released. Apple had bought a company named Authentec who made fingerprint scanners etc. People on sites such as this one all said that Apple could not make a fingerprint scanner for the iPhone. They all pointed out how other firms had tried including Motorola.

The Motorola was using Authentec finger print scanner before Apple did.

Yep, the fact that Samsung sells 100,000,000 more phones that Apple each year just means that many people are deluded fools who don't realized they're buying a crappy kluge that doesn't work.

The poor deluded souls making themselves suffer because of their own ignorance.
Any idea how many folk reading this own Samsung and Apple products.. are they all deluded fools?

and in 2021 they will be able to analyse dna and send you to jail. you can turn off the notifications though if you wan't to be surprised.

Do you really see a high end iris scanner implementation in an iPhone?
I don't. Cost prohibitive.

No, i don't either. Utter nonsense. Totally inappropriate for a handheld device.
I'm just correcting several false statements about iris scanning in this thread.

Man, if this is true Apple will be releasing their version of the Samsung Galaxy S6 in 2017. Then the 2018 model will be their Note 7. I love iCloud and iOS but hardware trailing 2 years behind is getting frustrating.

Not necessarily. Let's see how well Samsung's implementation actually works. Remember Apple wasn't the first with a fingerprint sensor, either, but they were the first to get it right.

Maybe.

You can't change physics - iris scanners usually use UV cameras and they are bulky compared to visible light cameras (eg B2I Biometrics Iris scanner for iPhone 4 called MORIS)

Getting iris scanning to work in thin form factor devices is goo to take some engineering & some compromise

Most likely battery compromise...

Intresting. I wonder how this would work with those with different colored eyes?
Imagine someone going to a Halloween party or ComicCon with funky contacts (say, the cat eye ones) and... they can't use their phone at all for the duration.
Edit: sure if both of your hands accidentally fall off maybe then it could be of use.. Though it may be difficult using an iPhone without any hands
That's why those who are truly thinking ahead add their nose to TouchID. ;)
Right now the Note 7's scanner doesn't play nice with glasses, contacts, puffy eyes, narrowed eyes, poor lighting conditions, bright lighting conditions, and must be a certain distance away from your eyes or it will do something not very nice to your eyeballs. So basically I have a better chance of turning into a werewolf than I have of it working for me. ;)
Five years ago my brother had a laptop with an iris scanner, and it was like something out of an old episode of Get Smart - every time he opens his laptop, minutes and minutes of leaning over the machine repeatedly, taking his glasses off, adjusting position, turning on room lights, carrying the laptop to a brighter room... Meanwhile I typed my long, complex, password on my MacBook Pro in two seconds. Apple has a pretty good track record of waiting until they can get tech to work well before adding it to their hardware (like TouchID), rather than racing to add another (half-implemented) bullet point to the product marketing the way a lot of other companies do.
This, so much this!
Just so much of awesome stuff is expected on 2017 and now 2018 models. :D
I hear the 2023 iPhone will be truly magnificent.

An excuse to get rid of the home button... Great!

You should know by now that Apple doesn't need an "excuse" do to anything... it just does it and you'll like it. Kind of like an arranged marriage with an attractive woman from a wealthy family, but also a bit on the demanding side.

So you would rather Apple rush it and have a crappy user experience. No thanks. And in what other ways is Apple behind. It is surely not is processing speed since Apple kicks ass there. What other great hardware features is Apple missing ?

So. Who here prefers an iris scanner to a 3.5" audio jack?
I DO NOT WANT AN AUDIO JACK STUCK IN MY EYE. In that case I'd prefer the iris scanner, thanks Much more non-invasive.

Also, 3.5-inch audio jack? The plug would be larger than a Coke can. I mean, sure, lots of surface area for good electrical contact, but that'd be over 25 times larger in diameter than the current 3.5mm jacks. I don't think Jony would go for it.
