Yep, the fact that Samsung sells 100,000,000 more phones that Apple each year just means that many people are deluded fools who don't realized they're buying a crappy kluge that doesn't work.

The poor deluded souls making themselves suffer because of their own ignorance.

Virtually all of those sales are people buying on price alone. And those cool Galaxy 6 features are not on those phones.

It is rumored that the 2019 iphone will have bull$#!£ comments detection and that the 2020 will have fart detection. C'mon! What is this allready? An escuse for the lame 2016 update???
Apple: "This year we took away 2 lines of plastic from the back!!! But wait! There's more! We have iris recognition......
...... In 2050."
I guess they have to pay the new Apple Campus somehow

Apple used to be the first to launch these kind of innovations years ago. Now they always go behind the competitors.
You mean like when they released the very first portable digital music player, and the very first smartphone? But then, neither of those really went anywhere.

I know Apple is different, but I had a similar biometrics system on my old Surface Pro 4. It was cool at first, but quickly became a novelty. Windows have it on their mobile devices, but it's not going to be earth shattering. The Note 7 will probably have one as well, but not a huge deal. I think the days of spending $800 on phones, at least for me, are ending. I decided to not buy a Note 7 because of all the pricing rumors, past pricing windows, and how I see the market. Samsung and Apple devices are priced higher and their prices drop slower than many mainstream devices.

So you would rather Apple rush it and have a crappy user experience. No thanks. And in what other ways is Apple behind. It is surely not is processing speed since Apple kicks ass there. What other great hardware features is Apple missing ?
He didn't say missing, he said behind.. where do we start..

processors that are milliseconds faster ain't exactly a big deal now are they, like saying a Lambo is faster than a Ferrari..

I think these rumours are becoming more and more absurd. Can we say that leaks are now safely contained at Apple and that rumour mills are now churning out ridiculousness in order to keep people commenting so they can get ad revenues?
I got it! We'll use your DNA for gaining access to the phone. All the diabetics will be able to do away with their blood sugar testers. You tap the home screen, "iStabby" protrudes from the case, you stab yourself to get a blood sample and wait about 30 minutes for the DNA results. Ultimate security. Awesome! :D

Current iris scanning implementations have some notable benefits over Touch ID, including no need for direct contact to unlock a device and faster unlock speeds, but there are also drawbacks such as poor functionality in low lighting and issues with performance following alcohol consumption and eye surgery.

Oh yes, I hate having to touch my iPhone to use it... I'm not sure how anything could be faster than Touch ID 2.

I can't imagine how an iris scanner would ever be superior to Touch ID on iPhone. Maybe it could be better on Mac and iPad, but Mac is already getting Apple Watch unlock (which could easily be implemented on iPad) which I believe would be even better.

Seems pointless to me, it's also pointless Apple copying Samsung but here we with them doing EXACTLY that IF this rumour is true.
Yep, I'm sure Apple was completely blindsided by this until they saw Samsung's announcement, and definitely set up a brand new research project to try to duplicate Samsung's success with iris scanners.

Or maybe, just maybe, Apple has ongoing research projects and prototypes for all sorts of tech that hasn't seen the light of day yet (and might never make it out of the labs). And folks who don't understand this hear some story about some specific research project, like an iris scanner, and assume that because "Apple is working on it", it will definitely show up in the next model of iPhone or iPad or Mac. And then they declare "Apple is putting an iris scanner in the 201X iPhone", and some industry analyst picks it up and repeats it, and then the story makes it to MacRumors, where people can say, "oh no, Apple is copying Samsung ". Rather than, "one of the hundreds of things Apple has been toying with in the labs is iris scanners."

LOL, rumors for phones 2 months from now won't pan out, and we are getting rumors for phones two years into the future.

FINALLY, MacRumors has an ABSOLUTE GUARANTEED Rumor about the iPhone. Yes, the 2018 iPhone WILL FOLLOW the 2017 iPhone. Brilliant!

;-)

When can we pre-order?

Is this a wind up? Please say it is so....
The OP was complaining that Apple used to be the first with innovations. I was pointing out that Apple's canonical products were not the first of their type, simply the first put together well enough as a whole package to be easily used by, and thus widely purchased by, the general public.

2018 iPhones are 2 years away. We haven't even seen what the 2017 model will be like. The 2016 model sounds like a total disappointment. Knowing Apple, having the extra time to improve iris scanning will be important. The Lumia 950, 950 XL, and Surface Pro 4 were decent at best. Decent as of 7/10. For biometrics, it's exciting though. I think it's a novelty at this point in time. But hey, we all work differently.

Not sure how scanning like this would work with contacts or glasses (or glare, shadows etc.). Seems a little far-fetched and not terribly useful.

It would have to be a pretty high resolution scanner because I'd never want to have to get my face as close to my phone to use it as that guy has his.

I can only see it as an additional security benefit. TouchID will always be faster. Also do to the likely requirement of having to remove glasses/contacts I can't see this as realistically being used to regularly unlock your phone. Maybe have a 3 step verification on restart of device one: passcode, touch ID and retinal scan. Other then that I see no real benefit of having this feature besides it making you feel like an uber important person or spy.

Well after reading all the comments to this point, I have to say in fairness to Samsung, they do tend to refine their new features over succeeding generations of devices. Around the time Apple gets around to implementing this the optimal way so that it fits in with their "it just works" credo, the iris scanner will also operate better on the Samsung of that time, too.

I am planning to get the Note7 and so I have spent some time getting a feel for the Android users community and I think what we see is that Samsung knows its target buyers like to experiment and fiddle around with the devices to a certain extent. They're more likely to at least tolerate a cutting edge new feature that really isn't ready for prime time than Apple buyers would.

Android users seem more likely to just shrug and say "Oh cool, let me try this...ah crap, this sucks, I am going to ignore it" whereas Apple users are more likely to say "This sucks, what the hell is this doing on my iPhone, somebody fire Tim Cook now!" I know that's a broad generalization, but that's how I see discussions playing out when I look at old archived Android/Samsung discussions and compare them to the Apple ones that are more familiar to me.

So Samsung is not actually slapdash and Apple is not really glacially slow. What both companies are is much more savvy about their user base than we've been giving them credit for in this thread. People look to Apple for different selling points than Samsung customers evaluate Samsung products by.

However I do see some overlap and I do see some customers getting a bit restless with Samsung's persistence in trying new things. I don't know if these users are converts from iOS or if they are just tired of being perennial beta testers for new somewhat half-baked features, but I do see some of the some concerns and complaints voiced here posted on their forums as well.

I would imagine that Samsung will hold to the Android community's expectation of customizable options and will allow this scanner to be disabled and allow the fingerprint scanner or passcode to be used in its place. If not, I will return it.
