This is mostly down to the fact that once you're fully in the ecosystem, it gets very difficult to have even one none-Apple product in the loop. Recently switched my MacBook Pro up with a custom built PC and I've had to jump through a couple hoops just to get things even similar to how they were in the closed ecosystem. Still have my Mac, but I've not touched the thing in weeks.

Only thing I'm missing is iMessage on my desktop, and the fact I can't have instant push on my iCloud account. I either have to refresh manually, or it fetches every 15 minutes. But these are small, first world issues and the transition has mostly been a smooth one.

I hear you lol, But, for all the crap we give apple, they do make some pretty great products (staring at my iPad Pro and iPhone 7 plus):)

Oh yeah. Apple handheld devices are second to none. But Mac is a serious issue right now. MANY people are starting to look elsewhere, Apple need to pull something out of the bag and stop overcharging for old hardware. Mac hardware is an absolute joke. The prices Apple are asking for are almost offensive.

I wonder how many people will remain loyal if Apple moves the TouchID sensor to the back of the phone?

I just went to Best Buy and played a little bit with the Galaxy S8 and I gotta say, the phone and its screen looks fantastic. The whole time I wished it was the new iPhone that I was holding. I just can't deal with Android. It's such a cluster f%$@# to me. Had that phone got iOS in it :rolleyes::rolleyes:

It sure does. I hope Apple doesn't go ahead to release an iPhone 6SSS with iOS 10.5 next fall, though my hopes at this point are about as slim as Jony's OCD with device millimetres.

But...but...what about the bezels...the big, thick, ugly bezels...? And the...the icons! The static grid of icons! And the same boring design! It's not the iPhone 7, it's the iPhone 6sssssss! And...and...and...watch bands! Fire Tim Cook! Jony Ive is a hack! 5200-RPM hard drives! Ughhhhhhhhhh!
That shows you the power of platform lock-in and hooks. All those things don't even matter.

Honestly, I have no desire to move away from the iPhone. Even if the competition might have better features. It comes down to the OS and the Mac environment. Until that is disrupted, I have no doubt I will be a loyal customer.
This is the moment when Apple leans back in the chair and says, mission accomplished.

Apple's loyalty rate of 92% dwarfs that of all other vendors, with Samsung garnering a 77% retention rate, followed by LG (59%), Motorola (56%), and Nokia (42%).

Yes but those number are not completely comparable. 92% of iPhone users go on to buy another iOS phone but it still has to be an iPhone. The question is how many of the 77%, 59%, 56%, and 42% of the buyers of those other OS phones go on to buy another phone with the same OS (kind, not version) but different manufacturer. The reality is Android users are just as "loyal" as iPhone users, if for any reason it's a PITA to switch to another OS. Inertia wins.

I've got an iPhone 6+ and if I were going to get a new phone it would very likely be an iPhone. I'm very comfortable with iOS and have no desire to leave the iPhone ecosystem. Now, whether I'm "likely" to upgrade is going to depend on a couple of things. Features and price.

TouchID sensor on the back would be a no-go. If that does make it into production it will only be because of manufacturing problems. Almost certainly the next year's version would have the sensor moved to the front under the display like has been rumored. I'm not buying into an obvious compromise that will be obsolete as soon as practical.

$1,000 price tag also gets me to hold onto my phone another year. The feature package will likely carry over from the 8 to the 8S in 2018 with the 8 moving down in price as the entry level phone. The smartphone market is pretty mature and there isn't anything I need my 6+ to do that it can't. It will get iOS 11 and very likely iOS 12 so I can be in decent shape for at least another year and maybe two.

Well, the last MBP sure was a lemon, but the OS, ecosystem and app lock-in is near irreversible.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it is a lemon. I have one. It's not terrible, it's just frustrating Apple waisted the space on the keyboard for a gimmick. I'm not a fan of the keyboard but it's grown on me as far as the shallower key strike feel. Rumor has it that new MBPs might be on the way at WWDC. I'd love it if Apple came out with a no Touch Bar 15". I'd be in line at the store before TC introduced the band.

I would go as far as to say it's the lamest 15" MacBook Pro I've ever owned, and I've pretty much owned the whole roster so far. Unfortunately my employer won't provide me the 2015 model, so I'm begrudgingly stuck with it. Maybe if those strange hinge creaks persist I will make another push.

Anyway, I hope WWDC focuses on the other Macs that are painfully overdue for ANY sort of update. To show new MBPs so soon after merely an October launch is somewhat dubious.

Yes, I'd agree it's the worst MBP ever but that's not to the depths of a lemon. I've also owned MBPs since the very first and PowerBooks before that.

Anybody who uses a smartphone fully as a smartphone will not be likely to switch platforms willy nilly, regardless of how that person feels about that platform.
Switching platforms is painful. Just take one app, whatsapp. Switching platforms mean losing all your chat history. On Apple, there are also iMessages and Photos where regular users will find it difficult to migrate to different platform.

Why is switching painful?

The market is maturing. I used to try everything Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone.
I don't even want anymore, I don't care. iPhone 7 Plus with latest iOS. What else do you want?

Anybody who is still left in the in the iPhone ecosystem at this point, after watching ship after ship sail by, is there for an other-than-technological reason, so they ain't going nowhere any time soon, probably for life. That is the exact moment when $1,000 base-price iPhones become a thing.
