It is not just the SDK, there is more to this. I bet they are going after RIM. See my previous post # 102.

Like with Windows they can sell a lot more if they sell to the enterprise. Apple will sell to both the common users and the enterprise. That is a HUGE market.

That's utterly pathetic.

"we plan to have an iPhone SDK in developers' hands in February" - That was October. Now 4 months later, they're saying they need another 4 months? They got the development plan wrong by 100% ?

Steve Jobs didn't invite the media to tell them about a SDK that will ship in June. Why would they care now?.

Steve Jobs invited the media to show them the 3G prototype that will ship in June.

All this talk about 3G and SDK, but what about Flash? Voice Recording? Copy/Paste? Video Recording?

well....

voice recording? sounds good, hope it happens, copy/paste? same. video recording? maybe....

flash?

that dog makes a full featured desktop work, and it gets more bloated and pathetic all the time. if i can watch movies on my old school video ipod but my mini chokes on video in flash from msnbc or abc, something is deeply wrong with flash.

please in the name of all that is good leave flash OFF my iPhone....

If Apple does Flash right it should be an optional download. Why should everyone be forced to have it?

I agree, all these guys wanting Flash just want to be able to surf porn.
Forget that bloatware!

People who think this should have just happened overnight have no idea just how much work goes into something like this. Making a third party software environment that is reliable, consistent, supportable, and secure takes a lot more work that the (admittedly impressive) work that the hacking/hobbyist community has done. If only I had a nickel for every time my Treo 700p crashed or was utterly hosed or unstable because of one garbage app or another. Certainly Apple could adopt the free-for-all model, but Apple prefers a, shall we say, more "refined" experience when it comes to consumer products, especially for its first foray into a major new marketplace. And that necessarily includes the iTunes selection and syncing paradigm.

The comments above (and the couple below this, and probably about 99% of the rest in this thread) typify the reaction by those who have literally no idea just how much work goes into developing such an initiative. I wouldn't go so far as to say "ignorant" or "completely unable to see the big picture beyond what new little icon they'll have on their phone", but close. Apple is taking baby steps here, and an SDK allowing third party development is a massive undertaking if you want to have an element of control over the process, and the beautiful integration people have come to expect, overall, from Apple products.

"What's going on in Cupertino?" Please. You have NO IDEA how many people are working on this, and how high a priority this is for Apple.

Wow. Not sure I have ever agreed MORE with a single post here in these forums (and I have been reading/posting for years).
Very well said and 100% spot on.
In my excitement, I'm tempted to add more to your comments.
But that would be adding for the sake of adding. Which = lame.

So, um, thanks. :)

Here's my questions. When the 3G phone does eventually come out, will Apple have to make updates that fit both the 3G and the edge phone? Or will Apple have to make two different updates, or abandon updates on the edge phone altogether?

Apparently you have never heard of under-promise and over-deliver. This is not the first time a delay has happened. In fact, over the past 18 months there have been far more delays than on-time releases.

Agreed. When Steve made the original announcement, if he were merely setting a "goal" as Mr. Daveschroder suggested, he should have been much less specific in the timeframe he gave. He should have said Q1 or Q2 2008 instead of "by the end of February."

You see... the thing is that the stock market isn't generally kind to large companies that miss deadlines, self-imposed or not. If Apple doesn't drop some type of extremely positive announcement at the March 6th event (i.e., exchange support coming by WWDC, etc...), then just sit back and watch as AAPL drops in value by $2-4 per share.

And that is just fine by me... makes the stock a better value for me to add to my portfolio :)

Does Apple do anything more than security updates and bug fixes for older iPods? I imagine the same would be the case for the older iPhone. Why support it with new and cool stuff, when they can get you to upgrade?

Yet another casualty of the worthless MacBook Air development.

I don't think iPhone software engineers were taken off the project to work on the MBA ;)

My prediction: WWDC 08 is going to be the biggest ever if it's focused on the iPhone. I can't wait to go :)

The iPhone 1.1.4 recently release probably moved some of the files and libraries around, closed some potential security holes and created an environment where unsigned and untrusted can live and execute from without totaly trashing the iPhone.

The 1.1.4 update did none of that - it added two carriers.. O2 ireland and T Mobile Austria, plus some minor bug fixes. Nothing moved and they didn't even 'fix' the jailbreak.

Assuming their build numbers are sequential, this was only 9 builds later than 1.1.3 and on the same branch - so it's not that different.

1.1.3 was the one where things moved around.. for example finally running apps as a user rather than running everything as root. The app installer system was added then (and used for the ipod touch 'update').

Can you provide a reference where someone at Apple siad that the SDK released in February would be complete and ready for deploying software to end users? Otherwise you're just blowing smoke.

why does this even sound possible to anyone. Steve said it would be late February for the sdk just last month. Why would he say that if it was gonna be delayed 4 months. Second. Why would a 3g phone make sense when they have to delay the sdk cuz they can't finish it in time. It seems impossible for both to be true.
Everything continues to point to the SDK being tied to the new phone.

Whatever are you talking about, "over night"? Apple has been dicking around with this [expleting expletive] iPhone for ages now, even to the point of neglecting their former core business, Macs and OSX. They're putting more effort into "protecting" and DRMing it than they're putting into usability. I thought "iPhone runs OSX!" Well, what's the freaking problem then? Release the APIs and let people program for that shiny brick.

No one here is doubting that it's a lot of work and the timeframe to release it to the mass developers. The disappointment arises when Steve Jobs claims publicly that it would be released at the end of Feb 2008. These are his claims and no one was forcing him to announce the release date, even though it's highly anticipated. It's his judgement of when products or services will be releasing or released. He is forgiven for the entire G5 3GHz in the PowerMac as its understandable that IBM also had a key-role in the development. However with software development even depending on beta testers Steve Jobs should better gage the release of a product(s).

Steve Jobs should have announced that it was due for release when the SDK was 98% completed, even though he is being optimistic. I much rather have him have knowledge that the SDK is 98% completed and give a March or April release then have it 80% completed and state an end of Feb release.

As the CEO of Apple his statements mean a lot to developers and consumers and to some extent the technology market, his release statements for products and services makes him lose credibility in so many eye. This delay does not bother me as I am not ready to invest in an iPhone or iPod Touch until its offered in Canada (iPhone) or WPA enterprise is incorporated. Though I have had an iPod Touch for a month as a test product. :)
