Interesting to see the demographics profile of iPhone SE launch buyers.

Compared to all iPhone buyers, they're significantly less likely to have a bachelor's degree. They're also significantly likely to have high school or "less than high school" education.

Compared to iPhone 6s buyers, SE launch buyers are less likely to be previous iPhone owners. And are less likely to have made a phone purchase in the past 24 months.

Fits in perfectly the idea that SE is targated and attracts price sensitive consumers.

Can you please cite any sources for your wildly inaccurate assumptions?

I can provide anecdotal evidence to counter every one of your assumptions.

Please don't make statements like this one above. It makes you look like an ignorant elitist ass.

The majority of folk that I know who currently own SEs, myself included, are highly educated professionals who were early adopters of the iPhone platform. We have no desire for a tablet sized phone, and buy the SE for the physical size. I'm personally on my 3rd SE. I moved from the 5S to the 6, ABSOLUTELY HATED the size, and have been an SE user since it was released.

We'd gladly pay a premium price for a mini iPhone.

it seems those who constantly post about how dumb we are to want a small phone have severe inferiority complexes......

personally i couldn't give two hoots what they want, if they want a giant phone good for them, but to ridicule us because we don't want to carry around a tablet in our pockets and we have a life that doesn't require staring at a screen 24/7 is ridiculous...

ironically i was in a phd seminar recently, out of 15 present only two used a computer at all, the rest used paper note pads.... how dumb is that???? i mean if having an SE makes us educationally sub normal, using paper must make us forest gump's stupid cousin........

If you bothered to click the link, it's a sample size of over 40,000 online shoppers in the U.S.

Do you always get mad at facts?

Last week a tried the iPhone 11 in a store. It's just ridiculously large. Why do people accept that they have to put half a tablet in their pocket to get the nice camera?

Tim Cook is speaking with analysts who will determine Apple's stock price after the earnings call.

Every new product has "overwhelming demand" as long as you don't ask Cook to reveal the numbers. He is presenting legally truthful statements.

If SE demand is so high, then why didn't Apple refresh the SE with an A10 or A11? Why is the SE2 a 4.7" device?
Maybe they wanted people to buy their more expensive phones rather than their cheapest.

That’s a given. But why launch a cheap phone at all?

Tim Cook said the SE was attracting two types of customers:
  1. Small phone lovers.
  2. People who aspire to own an iPhone, but couldn't afford one.

If the SE was outperforming sales expectations, Apple wouldn't need to drop the price of SE to $349. Apple could have locked the price for 4 years without any updates, like iPod Touch. In places like India, the SE regularly dropped to $200-249. The SE2 confirms there aren't enough #1 people out there.

My suspicion, and it is only that, is that the SE underperformed in markets like India. While Apple were hoping to get new iPhone users there. So it failed in what it was meant to do.
On the other hand I suspect that the SE overperfomed in markets like the UK and the US. I had always every other year bought the most expensive iPhone available. I hated the size of the 6s so replaced it with an SE. And I’ve stuck with it. I don't think that I am that unusual.
So the SE largely failed to get new iPhone users in developing markets. While also moving some existing iPhone users to buying a much cheaper product. So I think Apple's problem with it is that it didn't do well in markets they wanted it to, while simultaneously doing too well in markets they didn't want it to.

@ditzy
Great analysis and I think you're all over it.

What's frustrating to me is that they don't seem interested in catering to those of us not in developing markets who love its size and instead just seem to want to jam a huge phablet down our throat (that we have no interest in).

Think rumored 4.7” SE2 will probably sell modestly, but possibly not as well as 4.0” SE.

Both had/would have cheap price (by iPhone standards) going for them.

Both significantly smaller screen size than iPhone and general industry normal at the time of their release.

But SE2 could potentially also have another factor working against it. Lack of all-screen design. Over last several years, all-screen design has clearly become the normal for iPhones and smartphones in general (including even cheaper budget Androids).

It may have a full-screen design, we dont know it yet. It may also not be released at all

SE2, if released, is going to be very popular among those who still rock a 6, 6s or 7. And there's A LOT of these people around, who also love having an actual home button (like me)

It's not a dig, but anyone who is remotely tech literate can see the SE is several generations old.

A larger display is unequivocally better for consuming social media, video, and viewing photos.

It's like driving a sub-compact car. Sure, you might enjoy the small seats, analog controls, and lack of active safety features. But chances are, you're probably limited by income.

Driving a Cadillac around Des Moines might be great...but try parking that in a city of 8 million with alternate side fines and you will quickly find the size a bit inconvenient. Maybe the cost of 2 or 3 iPhones a year to rent a garage is a mere trifle. Nevermind it only gets 15 miles to the gallon, the Cadillac has leather seats that are really comfortable for sitting in crosstown traffic. Sure walking is faster in the city but why conserve resources when they can be spent frivolously?!

Without a doubt some people are just limited by a lack of common sense.

Seems obvious for retaining a Lower price point. Apples LCD panels have always been outstanding with calibration and matured over the years. Hopefully LG executes here.
LG display has been supplying Apple LCD panels since the 4s era. Even ipads / macbook uses LG LCD panels. LG LCD panels are one of the most advanced in the industry. Second maybe Japan Display.
