removing touchID is like removing the remote of your TV. Now you control it with hand gestures from the comfort of your chair.
someone really does use handgestures to control their TV? For real?
(other then the first day after purchase to show off to friends)

Sounds decent as an entry level iPhone... XR body with the newer A15 chip with 5G. Hopefully, the battery life will be good. Possible Touch ID, as a side button or digital scanner type. Though no mention of a screen resolution upgrade to 1080p as it should be the bare minimum on all iPhones. Keep it ~$400~$500 to keep people from leaving to Android as iPhones have become pricey. Not everyone cares or wants the latest & greatest tech in the iPhone at a premium price.

Apple: And today, we are thrilled to announce the next generation of iPhone SE! A form factor you are familiar with on android, but at double the price. Available in fun colors!

Oh, no charger included.

Enjoy!

If this ends up being a phone sized phone and not a tablet sided device (ie SE2) then I will totally pre order this.

The SE1 is on the upper end of phone sized phones. That is why I did not upgrade to the SE2.

If not I might be forced to upgrade as the SE1 will not be supported forever and Apple loves their tablet sized devices that can also make phone calls. A clear downgrade in usability for me.

If you like small phones, the 13 mini is literally the perfect phone, as it finally gives a mini phone with good battery life with flagship specs. The 2020 SE is just not a good phone (battery life) other than the launch price.
Agreed except for the price.
The same form factor but less features for a lower price is what many people wanted.

People who want a phone sized phone are going to use the device as a phone. Not as a touch screen PC that can also make calls.

Captain obvious, I know, but that is really it. The Mini is totally overkill for the physical size of device it is. These customers just want phone, email, calendars, contacts and maybe an app or two. Nothing fancy. Just a phone that is still in the Apple ecosystem.

The Mini is phone sized and amazing. However the customers wanted, phone sized and gets the job done. The difference between the two is a cost many (myself included) were not willing to pay.

Older tech in a phone sized form factor is fine. As long as it is supported for enough years. That still gets the job done and at a physical size people actually want.

For those saying the mini flopped sales wise, well it did. Not because of the physical size of the device. It flopped because overall it was not what the customers wanted, as I have explained above.

The customers wanted something like a phone sized SE. Not a phone sized (almost) flagship quality phone.

I wonder if this will be an upgrade from the iPhone 11 even without Face ID.

But either way thankfully they’re planning an LCD device without PWM.
Have you seen the new 13 Pro ? I can't see it flicker at all and I am extremely sensitive to PWM on OLEDs. I haven't seen the basic 13s yet in person but notebookcheck gives them the same PWM response time as the Pro so I am optimistic that they have fixed their OLED iPhones. I was worried I'd be out of luck after they switched away from LCD but things are looking good

PWM sufferer here, so a modem LCD 5g iPhone is most welcome.

The current iPhone SE/8 with 5G rumour didn’t seem credible - by all accounts, the 13 mini still suffers from sub-optimal battery life.

5G chips need bigger batteries.

And after going through the pandemic with Face ID and a mask, I’d welcome Touch ID again.

I’ve no problem with the XR notch and no Face ID array. Nor have I ever found the bezel to be distracting.

A single camera is fine too.

Ultra wide I’ve always found ‘meh’ when I’ve used it on my partner’s phone.

The telephoto/macro lens has always been the key 2nd lens for me but that’s always been a pro feature on the iPhone.

I guess that means no night mode, which is a shame but oh well, it’s not a deal breaker.

Fingers crossed.

That's fine. Modern usages has abandoned the 19th century prescription against split infinitives. It would have read as clunky to say "and to Be Apple's Last LCD Smartphone" Also, headlines sometimes use an artificially compacted grammar to fit the title within space constraints.
(Agreed. To be clear, it was an observation, not a criticism.)
