Apple NEVER targeted low income people for their products. They want people buying their services.
I cannot read Tim’s mind but Apple has used its devices high price(s) to deflect/pushback on government giving monopoly status to Apple; cannot own the market if only x% can afford products.

Apple SE has failed in market partly from above and their marketing does not want to cannibalize sales of other higher profile devices.

Apple SE has a loyal following, I pulled that statement out of my xxx. I would love to analyze the sales data; every SE I purchase (my cash) I get the 265mb memory, screen protection, not an inexpensive purchase. Does it have the same cachet as a 13,16, c whatever number Apple is up to, no?but very functional. The bean-counters rule corporate, so if sale numbers are off and a “bean-counter” does not factor in the monopoly argument then all is loss, we should welcome a larger device that will not fit into a shirt pocket. I’ll not liking that idea, so I’ll keep my current 2gen longer. I’m 68 maybe my need for a phone will coincide with my inability to make a call, I’ll call that even.

That’s not an opinion: it is a fact, and the reason why Apple switched from TouchID to faceID.

I don’t know what an “OG SE” is… but you should use an iPhone for several months before judging FaceID.
The OG SE refers to the 1st generation SE, released in 2016. It had the internals of a 6s in the body of the 5s. It is stuck on iOS 15.8.3 but still usable on the 4G network and last got a bug fix in July of 2024.

On a different note, I like face id, but I think Apple switched to it more because the home button was gone with X. It has been generally better for me though.

That’s not gonna happen and you know it.

If you don’t like it, you can turn it off and enter your code instead. That would be stupid, but if you hate FaceID so much, it’s up to you.
It's cumbersome, a thumbprint works more quickly, and more discreetly.

No it’s not. It’s not more quick and not more discreet. I strongly suspect many of the complainers here are SE fans with no or limited experience with Face ID
I strongly suspect you would be well advised to let me make up my own mind.

If you're so insecure that you can't admit that there are opinions, other than yours, which are valid, you probably shouldn't reply to posts which feature those opinions.

Your was a statement, not an opinion. Apple switched from touchID to faceID because it is a superior solution. That’s a fact.
You don’t like faceID and prefer to stick with an outdated phone. That’s an opinion.
See the difference?

The difference is that you don't understand what a fact is, but you are unwilling to admit it.

You also are making unjustified and pejorative inferences, but you seem unaware of that, or perhaps that's your idea of valid discourse.

However, please feel free to be bent out of shape by my disagreeing with you.

Touch ID is faster if it is laying on the desk. If the phone is in hand, Face ID is way faster. Touch ID is definitely more discreet too. I don't have to look at the phone, I can just subtly touch it. It really depends on use case.

Enjoy your unsecured phone.

Lol… unsecured. Apple said FaceID is TWENTY TIMES more secure than TouchID.
Apple, not a no-one on the web.

While releasing Face ID, Apple explained that a chance of a random person unlocking an iPhone through Face ID is one in a million. In comparison, Touch ID could be fooled about one in every 50,000 attempts. This shows that Face ID is 20 times more secure than the fingerprint sensors used on older iPhones.

As I said, FaceID could be something you and someone else don’t like, but it is a more advanced and secure solution than touchID.

So why is TouchID still on some iPads and Macs? Is it just cost?

If someone grabs your phone and points it at your face, it's unlocked... whereas with TouchID they'll have to force me to unlock it or they'll have to cut off my finger.

Yes, mainly cost. TouchID is on cheaper iPads and iPhone SE.
Mac are a different beast: FaceID is less practical without a touch screen.

How come FaceID is less practical without a touch screen?

Although I prefer TouchID, MBP and MBA would be the only devices I wouldn't mind using FaceID...

This is one reason I stuck with the SE so long, but the setting to require attention for FaceID unlock does help with this.

After this comment the question raise again: did you ever use FaceID, in real world ?
because you should know the answer…
You have to ACTIVATE facial recognition, by taking up your phone (not practical with a notebook !) and swipe up the screen. Not so practical without a screen to interact with.
On a notebook there should be a button to activate FaceID anyway… so if you must have a button, it is more practical to use Touch ID on that button.

Your comment about "touchscreen needed" is nonsense because you can rotate the MBP/MBA screen so that the camera recognizes your face and activates FaceID, and then you swipe up on the trackpad...

Again: did you ever try it ? It requires you to LOOK AT the phone, something that requires a physical intervention on you. At that point they could easily take your finger with the force and make you touch the screen in the same way. Most of your objections point in the same direction: you don’t really know how faceID works.
It was the same with my wife. There are people that don’t like changes. She refused the idea of leaving her comfort zone at the time, and when I gave her an iPhone XR as a gift she almost rejected it. But with time she realized it was vastly superior and today she is perfectly happy with her iPhone 13 pink.

Rotate the notebook ? Swipe the trackpad ? And does it seems practical to you ? 😅

Again, read my previous post when I wrote that I tried FaceID and didn't like it.

You obviously living in a bubble if you think Face ID is the best thing ever, even though it's not.

Go do an experiment - grab your wife/friends phone without them noticing and shove it in their face and see what happens...

And for laptops, it can be as practical as using it with an iPhone and iPad.

Ok, ok… you should call Tim Cook directly and make him know all these big news you have discovered with the sales numbers of Mini’s. Sure that if he was aware of this, he would change his mind right away and ordering the mass production of 16 Mini by Monday.
Quite arrogant. What do you gain by this?

Does ANYONE KNOW or KNEW what the sales numbers Apple was ACTUALLY expecting?!
Why NOT did Apple actually ADVERTISE either of the mini's beyond the launch video of the iPhone keynotes - the 13 mini got less than 4 minutes spoken about.

So Answer that in all your wisdom: Globally why did Apple NOT advertise either of the iPhone mini's when their 2nd Executive in command SPECIFICALLY stated their research showed a LOT of iPhone SE users kept their devices and was waiting for a similar small phone?

Hmmm.

That's exactly WHY both mini's failed. NOT that either was an inferior product ... Apple leads and marketing team failed the company and the product. Makes you think WHY though?!

And that why the Samsung and Google mini iPhones continue to be such huge market leaders, capturing the entire mini cell phone marketplace away from the Apple iPhone.

Oops my mistake. They don’t make a mini sized phone either. So why is this huge upswell of smaller screen mobile phones desire going unsatisfied by major phone suppliers? Could it be the actual market for such is just a minuscule (but very vocal) portion of the world wide mobile phone market?

Yeah you're mistake ...

Oppo & OnePlus are already in R&D to make 6.2-6.3" "mini" Android phones to be launched and shipping internationally by late summer 2025
Oppo X8 mini
OnePlus 13T/13 Mini (name not yet even out of R&D but the X8 mini name is a given).

There are several others under 6" still for sale in specific nich markets.

ZTE made teh Zenphone 9 and 10 of the exact same sizes as the iPhone mini's and sold quite well also.

Maybe stick your head outside the Apple bubble you may find more information that refutes your ignorance.
