Wow, if this is significantly lighter (and if this is accurate, big if), I would consider replacing my 16 Pro with an SE.

Might end up with one anyway from my company, but I'm not sure if I'm in line to have my SE 2022 upgraded.

I’m having a bit of difficulty figuring out who would buy the normal iPhone 16 over this SE 4 or whatever it winds up being called.

I think we can take it for granted that it’ll have the latest CPU; every SE to date has packed the latest CPU, because the point of these things is to be the cheap phone for at least three years.

That leaves the only differentiating factors being…
1. only one camera (do most consumers care?)
2. no action button or camera button (definitely nobody cares)

Years ago I thought the XR (LED screen) or Mini would make much more sense as the basis of the SE line. The current specs look a little too good to be true…

Some people care about Magsafe and Night mode on the iPhone 16 and the SE will not have those things.

Me too, but for now, it's the price to pay to have a Face ID technology that is so reliable.
Windows laptops like the Asus zephyrus g16 are able to have face login without notches (and it isn't just using a normal camera, it has infrared camera).

I don't buy that first one. Magsafe isn't expensive, and leaving it out cuts off too many accessories, would create to much confusion in the market.
MagSafe may not be expensive, but if it upsells people from the SE then it's profitable. And confusion is always good for upselling.

There has been no mention of the new SE 4 getting Magsafe though. I will have to see it to believe it for Dynamic Island. Apple would not want to completely cannabalize the iPhone 16.

all in on apple intelligence.
Incidentally, I just saw this today:

Of course, by the time the SE4 comes out this will have been disabled by iOS 18.3.

More likely that the Dynamic Island is meant to simplify the supply chain management, i.e. share the same part SKU as the 14 and 15.

It'd be easier to segment it if they made it small! Just sayin
