My thoughts are that these will not have a "dynamic" island - just a dynamic Island shaped cutout.

That the island will only house a regular camera, not Face ID.

Touch ID on the power button like the IP Air.
Look at how large that button is on the iPad. I don't think they will put that on an iPhone.

Windows laptops like the Asus zephyrus g16 are able to have face login without notches (and it isn't just using a normal camera, it has infrared camera).
1. It's got a Bezel that houses the camera and sensors, not an edge to edge screen.
2. The module is HUGE in comparison.

I’m having a bit of difficulty figuring out who would buy the normal iPhone 16 over this SE 4 or whatever it winds up being called.

I think we can take it for granted that it’ll have the latest CPU; every SE to date has packed the latest CPU, because the point of these things is to be the cheap phone for at least three years.

That leaves the only differentiating factors being…
1. only one camera (do most consumers care?)
2. no action button or camera button (definitely nobody cares)

Years ago I thought the XR (LED screen) or Mini would make much more sense as the basis of the SE line. The current specs look a little too good to be true…
The value/$ of this SE 4 reminds me a lot of what we got in the (excellent) 1st gen. iPhone SE.

The original SE launched in Q1-Q2 and was based on the 5S but had most of the internals of the 6S.

SE 4 seems to be more like a mix of iPhones 14, 15 and 16, with a few key downgrades on certain specs, as is always the case for SE.

But I gotta say, if on top of the 8/128 specs also gets Dynamic Island then it's going to be a massive hit at <$499. So good that it has to start cannibalizing iPhone 16 and 16 Plus sales.

I'm not convinced. But the first SE was very impressive value at the time. Maybe this is more of that.

It's free advertising, I was watching the trump inauguration and could see people taking pictures and see phones with dynamic island.
Very true.

Apple is very concerned with iPhones being instantly recognizable both when looking at the back and at the front (display).

Without a notch or dynamic island(notch), iPhone would look too much like all other smartphones.

Why would anyone buy an iPhone 16 over this? The only difference that’s noticeable to the avg user is the second camera, and how many base model purchasers even caree

The 13 mini should be good until 2029 or so, no need to make plans just yet.
Do you have a backup unit or two? I've already replaced my SE 2022 twice -- once due to water damage and once due to crackling and failing speakers.

The recipe for an SE 4 that's just an iPhone 14 with Dynamic Island only requires Apple to give it iPhone 15 or 16's front panel.

But giving SE 4 a Touch ID side-button and a Face ID-less Dynamic Island requires Apple to r&d parts that have never been on any previous iPhone.

-SEs have, historically, always been "Frankensteined" products to keep costs low.

Seeing an older iPhone with brand new elements is therefore extremely unlikely.

At that point, may as well discontinue both the iPhone 14 and the 15, since neither can do Apple Intelligence.

Have a hard time believing Apple will sell it for $499 when the 15 is much more expensive.
Not everyone wants Apple Intelligence.

If I was in the market for a new phone Apple intelligence would Be a detractor not a feature.

The images in this article confuse me. Like, what's that entire second set of images supposed to be? The silhouette of the planned new iPhone SE and some iPads? A caption would really help, MR.*

Also if these images are meant to be accurate, it looks like the rumored iPhone has four buttons along the sides - three on one side and one on the other.

I know, they're all made up at this point. We don't know where these images come from, who made them, what information they're based on or if they were entirely pulled out of thin air by the leaker or someone else. But if they reflect rumored features, would that mean the buttons are power, two volume and one.... action? camera?

*Those second images are really kind of unhelpful. For example they show the same button placement when a device is seen from the front or when it is flipped over to show it from the other side. If they were accurate, the buttons would have switched sides. And if the images are hack jobs, what does that say about the quality of the rest of the rumors mentioned?

Indeed, the SE has always been about recycling. Not to mention a Touch ID side button could be seen as something missing on the more expensive models.

All of the images are of the front, the upper ones showing an Apple logo like when starting up. It's unclear whether there's a mute switch or Action Button on the phone.

I don't think so it will be good till 2029, I am even scared to update it to iOS 18, every year the phone will slow down and lag a lot. My iPhone 7 was not usable after 3 years, same thing happened to my mothers iPhone 12.

"People" keep saying it is based on the iPhone 14 but seriously are there any features left from that? Might as well designed something from scratch (what is what they did) but make it a bit more unique like use a ~5.8" screen and make it a tad smaller than huge phones we have now,

That's probably true, however, I would think many people who normally would go for a 15 will decide to go for the SE 4 this time around, lowering Apple's potential revenues. By how much we'll have to wait and see.

You know what? It makes sense from an economy of scale point of view, and we already know Tim Cook is a master of the supply chain.

If all the current OLED screens Apple is using on their iPhones are “Dynamic Island ready” screens, then maybe producing notched screens is even more expensive. And they want that piece of the cake of cheaper, mid-range smartphones. I think it’s brilliant.

Now the last leak we’re waiting to know is perhaps the most intriguing one: the iPad 11. If it comes with 8GB of RAM, it will be the best value ever.

That would be wonderful honestly. It’s sad that it’ll be probably an iPhone 14 body tho

Well thats frustrating, I was going to get this as an iPhone 14 replacement, I prefer the notch

That's a good point. I think the iPhone 14 is going to be discontinued very soon and the rumors are that the iPhone 17 range will use a narrower island. This suggests that it's in Apple's interest to stop production of the notch-type displays and use the 1st gen dynamic island screens for the SE 4, as it will likely be sold for the next 3 years.

Personally I think Magsafe will be included as it opens up more peripheral sales for Apple. Interested to see if the U1/U2 chip is included.

Me too, but for now, it's the price to pay to have a Face ID technology that is so reliable.
Here’s a theory that’s going to piss off a lot of people if it actually pans out. If Face ID is still way more expensive than Touch ID (the big if which this theory hinges on), Apple might use a Touch ID side button instead, functioning similarly to the one on the iPad 10th gen. (Would mean no slide up to unlock, but single press the side button. Raise to wake and tap to wake could still take you to the Lock Screen though.) As a result the Dynamic Island could be smaller (housing only the camera and earpiece speaker), but won’t be because Apple wouldn’t want the smallest Dynamic Island on their cheapest phone 😂

It's still a notch! Apple even calls it that internally.

"Dynamic Island" is just the marketing term that Apple boffins came up with after years of consumers complaining about the gap.

It seems that people really do have their rose colored glasses on when it comes to the Apple bubble.
