More RAM uses more battery. Less RAM is better for less often wall-hugging. There's often a trade-off. Some won't mind, some will.
It may uses more but by how much more? 20mAh more? Or 900mAh more? Last time I heard the screen uses up a large portion of the power, while very few actually complain their more RAM phone runs out Battery quicker than lower RAM phones.

huh, unless there's physically more ram modules it's unlikely there'd be any notable difference in power consumption due to ram. More likely is they'll just use larger capacity modules.

No different from different phone capacities. Last i checked apple didn't quote lower battery life for for their 512/1tb models.

Well said.

I wonder if anyone has actually done battery tests to see, at different work loads if more RAM really eats up more power.

I could imagine that swapping memory to SSD also eats up "more power" on macbooks.

On a regular computer; if you installed a second stick of ram then sure it'll consume more power.
Each stick uses about 1 watt.
On the other hand if you took out an existing stick of ram and simply swapped it for a higher capacity one; it'll use about the same. Iphones are so tighly put together that i'd be shocked if they didn't just use a higher capacity module

This is a bit tongue in cheek, but I thought they were touting how they were able to get Apple Intelligence working on low RAM machines? This is the same amount of RAM that their Pro line of Macs includes, so it seems like that comment may have been a bit inaccurate?
To be fair, the Pro line of Macs start at 16GB. It's the Air line of Macs that start at 8GB. Both of these should be doubled as base specs though.

The base Google Pixel 9 phone is coming out with 16GB of RAM ffs.

Nope, the base MacBook Pro (you know, the one without a Pro chip) comes with only 8GB.

(Also, reports say the base Pixel will have 12GB)

Next year's iPhone 17 is rumored to have 8GB RAM too.

The SE4 will absolutely cannibalize the base model sales.
The base iPhone 17 is one of the reasons this rumor is so believable. It seems it will be a big upgrade from the SE (and the 16 as well). It's rumored to have Dynamic Island, dual back cameras, higher megapixel front camera, capture button, bigger screen, ProMotion, and Always on Display. A relatively short 6 months of a 2025 SE being "too good" starts making more sense when you take that into account.

If you can read this Tim Cook, pls pls pls buy oura and do not change the p;roduct. just make it apple oura with the same vibe. You will do well ;)

Nah, it takes up a lot of space and weight to fit all those batteries and charging coil in. I'd rather have a bigger battery in that space in the first place.
A lot? No, it doesn't. You're doing well with spreading misinformation on this thread this morning...

jeez all the things ill miss out on not being able to run stable diffusion on my phone.
Apple is telling you, that everything runs on your local machine. And stable diffusion is just a small part to generate image. But generally spoken every LLM nees memory. And 8GB? The system needs its share, the App needs RAM, the Display needs RAM. So what's left for AI - 4GB?

That is why Siri has to constantly ask you for permission to query OpenAI online.

And yes - you don't need AI at all - so what are we talking about?

It will still not be remotely close to top of the line, yet Apple put so much buzz into their AI that excluding it from any new iPhone would be like releasing a new iPhone without a camera.
To enthusiasts.
idk why macrumors readers act as if they are the average iPhone consumer.

Even without all its rumored to have the iPhone SE still sells well for one simple reason: price.

The se 3 literally sold 15-20 million within its first year using the same exact design as the se 2 two years prior. Which was a rehash of the iPhone 8 which itself was a rehash of the iPhone 6.

Again, with AI-based features are being actively promoted by all major smartphone makers (Google, Samsung, etc.) and Apple spending a large part of their WWDC2024 upselling AI, it will not work well. I get it that Apple still ship iPhones with 60Hz screens in 2024, but if they want to advance in their AI efforts, they better use it.

Honest question, why phones needs 8GB RAM? I have 4GB iphone everything works well. I have 8GB macbook, things are pretty snappy. Unless you like do 4K video editing...

To stay out of direct spying by Apple "intelligence" and still have access to AI, all one needs is to install Opera for mobile in the iPhone. You can get whatever info, creations etc using language models like Google's Gemini and PALM2. You don't even have to use Opera as your browser, but get the info (and creations and whatnot). 👌
