I will buy this.

Lot of upset, it seems, about the Mini chasis being overlooked, but thats just personal cases. The mini didnt sell well enough.
Actually, I had a 12 mini and it didnt work out for me. It was, gulp, too small… I went back to the 11 (and now the 11 pro max) because of its superior design, and frankly because of the expense. (Mint 11 Pro Max with 512GB is around £400 today). I stopped spending £1200 on my phone every year, and never looked back.

Dont get me wrong - I'm regularly enticed by the tech in newer iphones, and not having a 5G connection is a bit of a downer, but not one that keeps me awake at night.

And thats why I will buy the SE4. It will have 5G, and a nice enough everything else, for not as much money as the rest of the iPhones.

Interesting re: dimensions, as this means it would be somewhat between a mini and any regular 6.1” iPhone:

Check that. As clearly indicated, those are the dimensions of the existing iPhone SE 3, not the future iPhone SE 4. The reason that information is included in the article is to highlight the expected size increase. That is to say, the SE 4 dimensions will be exactly as described in the article: the same as the iPhone 14 but slightly lighter weight due to the use of a single camera instead of two.

You should reread my comment. I said the SE always got the chip in the latest base iPhone at time of release, not that the SE would get the Pro A chip. In mid-2025 the iPhone 16 would be the latest base iPhone and it will have the A17 (and the iPhone 16 Pro would have the A18 Pro). So if Apple keeps to the SE release convention so far, if they release it in 2025 it would have the A17 chip, just like the iPhone 16.

The whole point of keeping the iPhone 14 on the A15 last year was so that Apple can start putting the A(n) Pro chip on the Pro model and the non-Pro A(n-1) chip on the base model. I very much doubt the regular iPhone 16 would skip a generation and get the A18 in 2024. The A18 should instead be in the iPhone 17.
Yep, I think it depends on branding really. They may give the standard 16 an "A18" and the Pro model the "A18 Pro", keeping the Pro wording away from the baseline model, similar to how it works with Macs.

I expect either A17 or A18 in this SE depending on what they do there.

Oops, I have missed the SE3 part! Corrected. Back to my 15 now, hoping for the foldable one day. 😉

I'm not a shareholder so I don't care about Apples profits but this seems like a bad decision. The SE would cannibalize a lot of the non-Pro sales.

...

So regardless, it will get a price increase.

It's true that this would mark the first time the SE has a very similar form factor to and same screen size as the newest iPhones. Still, there are rumors that the non-Pro iPhone 16 models will finally get ProMotion which would create a little more separation in addition to the better camera and larger usable screen area (pill instead of notch) you mention. That said, I would agree that a small price increase is a good bet, but probably no more than $499.

I myself would never pay _double_ the price for "Pro" features, if those are only slightly better cameras, 120hz, and under-screen FaceID (vs notch). Few people would.

Remember that the Pro is heavily rumored to get a screen size increase to 6.3" next year. That will widen the gap between it and the lower end models including this new SE arriving to market presumably six months later.

i‘m loosing it. i‘m literally loosing it. i‘m typing this on an iphone se 1st edition, almost falling apart, with a replaced battery that the settings app is too shy to show how bad it really is. this is the level that i cling to the form factor because it’s the only one i‘m willing to pay for and that i can actually use because i‘m in the minority of people who have normal-sized hands.

now, for the sake of it, why is it so damn hard for the bone heads at apple to just flush that ugly as **** camera bulge — yes, give me a camera from 5 years ago! — and put it into an iphone 13 mini case?

what’s so bloody hard about this for this trillion dollar company?!

i hate the leadership since steve is gone.

Dude, just buy a lightly used 12 or 13 Mini; probably cost the same or less than this new SE Mini which you really want but Apple wont make.

To me the pinnacle of iPhone design was the iPhone 5S/iPhone SE 1st gen. I loved it. Sadly it's gone, not coming back. Just like there will never be another 1959 Cadillac convertible made.

If the 5/5s form factor is the only one you are willing to use, the 13 mini won‘t really get to what you want even with a flush camera. Its size is more or less the same as the 6/6s with a screen that’s even larger. And of course it‘s not hard to fit a smaller camera in, but it would sell terribly. The mini form factor is already not that popular these days, and if you threw in a terrible camera, it would only appeal to an even smaller portion of the small phone crowd.

I'm a iPhone SE (2020) user and this will likely be my next phone. I would have much prefered a mini form factor, but I understand Apple's reluctance to use that. Adapting the internals from the flagship iphone to a 14 model is not a big move, wheras squeezing everything into the smaller form factor of a no longer produced mini would be more work. Plus as much as the Mini has fans on here, it didn't actually sell that well compared to the SE.

Because most people preferred larger iPhones to smaller ones, like in sales numbers.
That’s like saying people buy SUVs because they prefer them, when in fact US manufacturers basically gave up making sedans & coupes because they market SUVs & trucks exclusively because larger is more profitable.

So let’s stop with the “it’s consumer preference“ shtick, because that’s not it at all.

It’s profits.

I'm not a shareholder so I don't care about Apples profits but this seems like a bad decision. The SE would cannibalize a lot of the non-Pro sales.

First of all, no one cares about the ultra wide angle sensor missing.
Secondly, no one (well, no one in their right mind) cares about lack of the 'Dynamic Island'.
From what I gather, those two features are the only things that differentiate the SE from the non-Pro models, except size on the Plus model.

And since Apple does not make bad decisions impacting their profit, this means one of two options is true if this SE, in this form, is released:
The non-Pro models will cease to exist and the SE will get a price increase
or
The non-Pro models will continue to exist and the SE will get a price increase

So regardless, it will get a price increase. I myself would never pay _double_ the price for "Pro" features, if those are only slightly better cameras, 120hz, and under-screen FaceID (vs notch). Few people would.

The magic of iPhone is iOS, the SoCs and the pretty good battery life. Not the other stuff. And Apple knows it. It won't come cheap, I believe.

The current iPhone SE doesn’t make any sense to purchase at current price. It has outdated case, outdated screen, almost 3 years old chips. I double current iPhone SE will impact sales of non-pro at this stage. If I would buy a iPhone with iPhone SE price, I will go out buy refurbished iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 13.

Second. The new iPhone SE probably will have features cut to barebones. One camera, probably binned down screens, A16 processors (which I don’t see A17 Pro going into this one) etc.

Will iPhone SE take away sales from current non-pro line, probably some. But Apple refreshes iPhone SE like every three or four years, by second year of new iPhone SE, impact on non-pro model will be reduced and by third year will be almost non-existence.

i don’t love the mini’s size either. i loved the 5s’ 4 inches.

but they already had the mini production line so it’s easier to adjust.

i opine they didn’t. they just bought it because that’s what they were offered. the bean counters at apple thought “samsung is selling those giant phones! let’s do it too!”.

i explain ppl how i can comfortably use my phone with one hand (!) and it fits into pockets and small places. they raise their eyebrows and go “that’s true”.

ppl have no effing clue. they but whatever shiny crap falls off some production line.

and sadly, apple decided to not produce smart phones anymore but cameras looking like one. as if everybody needs a dslr.

iPhone SE was compact, perfect for small hands of many, many teenagers and under.
Apple has a weird year of decision making.

My gf decided to stay on her original iPhone SE and replace the battery instead of going with the new SE models. She likes the small form factor.
reasonable woman. vote with your money.

trillion dollar shop and they can’t produce a usable phone w/o protruding dslr? f me.

I have an iPhone 13 mini now, if this SE 4 will be the same size at the normal 13/14/15 then I would rather buy iPhone 15 or wait for the 16. Makes no sense to buy this SE 4.

Let's hope my 13 mini lasts for another 1 or 2 years. I have not updated to iOS 17, how is it on the mini 13? does it makes it slow or decreases the battery life? My brother has a 12 and when he updated his phone has become slow.

don’t upgrade. my first iphone was the 3gs. every last major version of ios a device recieves criples the performance. everything gets slow and lags. most people don’t notice though because they have laaarge tolerances. just like ppl didn’t notice the flickering on a 75hz crt.
do not upgrade.
