I thought the point of the SE was to offer a small phone as well as an affordable one.
No - the point of the SE has always been to offer a low-cost iPhone. One that not too many customers in the developed world want (so as not to cannibalise sales of their bigger premium devices).

Most people don't want small or years-old technology/design.
Both keep the price down though, so that's probably why it used to be small.

Please don’t start this debate again.

SE is entry level model. Nothing to do with size.

SE stands for “special edition ,” that doesn’t sound like just an entry level model. It was released during a time when larger phones were being released, this was marketed as the alternative, the “special edition.” Making it a 6.1 totally defeats the purpose…I’m sure it will still sell but meh, it’s going to upset many SE owners who cling to the smaller size.

Did you really expect Apple to call it "Low Cost Edition"? :)

Don't understand why they would use a 6.1" screen compared to a 5.4" Mini screen. A 6.1" display with the latest A chip (if it follows the SE trend) and low price would likely canibalise sales from the mainline 6.1" models for people that just want a regular camera.

The SE has always been an older phone with new insides.
I expect this to be the same.
I.e. An XR with an A16 or some such(probably not the latest chip now that they won't even put that in the latest regular iphone).

I happen to use an XR for the last 4 years, and it's perfect fine. Only thing I don't like is it's too heavy.
Would get this new SE if it had been based on 12/13 mini.

Excellent news.

Given the SE is intended to attract price-sensitive consumers and Android switchers, this SE4 should do a great job, at least much better than the 4.7-inch model. The 2024 date makes more sense as it would otherwise compete with the notched iPhone 14.
I disagree and don’t care about android switchers.
I want something smaller than a phablet in the lineup.

I could have told you this ages ago.

The next iPhone SE is going to be based on the iPhone 11 body and WILL have face ID. It will be released in early 2024, shortly after the iPhone 15 models have been released in late 2023.

They are not going to redesign any aspect of the phone. The SE line has always used an old shell. Never a new one.

Whether it's the size of the mini, the iPhone X, or the Xr or 11; I can live with any of those.

But please, let there be Face ID. I detest the touch ID side button.
There will be face ID, even though I personally prefer touch ID. I guarantee they are not going to redesign the phone in any way. It will be an exact replica of the iPhone 11, just as the first SE was a replica of the 5s and the 2nd/3rd SEs were replicas of the iPhone 8.

That design raises the question of what Apple would stick into the notch area that is not a front facing camera, given it makes no sense to tweak the mould just to make it smaller. Or they will reuse the mini shell since that size apparently doesn’t sell very well, which would be another happy incident of “hey, SE means small phone”. I doubt it though.

Hmm. In early 2024 my XR will be nearly 6 years old. If the SE4 increases to a 6.1 form factor it might make a suitable replacement. I don’t want a phone smaller than a 6.1.

And here I thought todays Apple was less predicative than before thanks to a couple bombshells on software and discontinuation surprises.

How long until all iPhones don't have Dynamic Island and use some kind under display camera system?

If it's going to take 6 years for the SE (SE4?) to get a notch / FaceID (first appeared on iPhone X in 2017), then I'm thinking it'll be another 6 years until the SE gets Dynamic Island.

If Apple updates the SE every year, that'll be the iPhone SEX

(Apple's going to use a roman numeral for 10 like they did on the iPhone X and macOS X, right?)

I think we're forgetting how old and outdated the XR looks by modern standards, with its substantial bezels and blocky shape, even to ordinary people. It was dinged for having large bezels even in its time, after all.

The requirement of USB-C may necessitate a change, however.

Good point. However, what do they do next year?

I'm not sure the SE will garner much attention in 2023 if it retains the same current design.
