Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the whole purpose of the notch was to house the True Depth camera along with front facing camera? If they plan on keeping the Touch ID to “keep costs down” then there’s literally no point in having the notch, just go for the hole punch design for the front facing camera. But seeing as Apple has never done that I can almost guarantee that if the new SE has a notch then Touch ID will be gone.
Agree. Apple is about streamlining production for maximizing efficiency, aka using existing components. They wouldn't be bothered redesigning the shell and screen just for the cheapest (lowest margin) iphone. It will be just the XR with probably an A16 or A17 inside.

Can't come soon enough...
Honestly, I'd love to see a more modern apple lineup.
I don't like the sloppy nature of having a mixture of old (M1 Macbook Air, M2 Macbook Pro, Base iPad, iPhone SE 2022) and new ones.

I'd love to see a more coherent lineup in 2023 and I'd really love to see a redesigned Mac Mini.

Don't understand why they would use a 6.1" screen compared to a 5.4" Mini screen. A 6.1" display with the latest A chip (if it follows the SE trend) and low price would likely canibalise sales from the mainline 6.1" models for people that just want a regular camera.
People want big phones. The XR / 11 is big and even if Apple put USB-C on it, I’d imagine with a 5-6 year old chassis (by 2024) they’ll be able to fit that in ok.

I think the reports of dynamic island being on an it are unlikely though.

This is the company that still sells the chassis of 2014 in the 4.7 inch Touch ID SE3.

OLED vs. LCD. The XR 6.1" LCD screen already exists. For the mini, they would either have to use the more expensive (and more premium) OLED screen, or they’d have to design and set up production of a new 5.4" LCD screen. The larger battery probably also facilitates whatever adjustments they make to the internals.
Also with a - presumably - cheap to repair LCD screen, this phone is going to be great in emerging markets (and for anyone who just wants a relatively cheap modern iPhone).

I wonder if the XR chassis will be redesigned similar to the 14 ie opens on both sides.

I think the Xr design is a logical choice for the next SE. I’m on a 13 mini now, but my 11 was one of my favorite iPhones, and I’ve had almost every model since the original. It wasn’t flashy, but it was wonderfully functional. The Xr sold well until the day it was discontinued. I think an updated Xr would satisfy many people who just want an affordable iPhone. I’d love to see the mini resurface at some point though.

It’s a shame they can’t make it more like the iPhone 11, but instead of an ultra wide, make the second lens a 2x zoom for portraits. Still, I’m glad this will still have LCD for my pwm sensitive friends. Now if they would stop with temporal dithering, too.
Apple will stick to single lens for the lowest tier iPhone. If they put two lenses, less people would be tempted to spend more on the more expensive iPhones. It's about upselling. The same reason Apple is not giving telephoto lens to non-Pro iPhones.

Markets change and it's about turning lemons into lemonade. When the 9.7-inch iPad was launched in 2017, Apple sold it on "portability" and price. Apple doesn't mention that anymore with the current 10.2-inch model.
That’s strange. The standard iPad has only gotten about 6-7% bigger. Not sure why Apple wouldn’t call that portable anymore.
But in any case, yeah things change. Obviously, the SE has gotten bigger despite how Apple introduced the line.

Can we please stop perpetuating the notion of Apple doing these never-done-before iPhone hybrid designs for the SE? They are not happening. Never have, never will.

iPhones with new designs and/or new hardware start at $799 in 2022. $429 is not enough to cover r&d for anything more than a limited spec bump and new color options using an old iPhone design and mostly older hardware.

End of story!

That phone would end up selling very well. The 6.1" screen will make it so the people who have trouble with small text on the current 4.7" screen will no longer have that problem, and 5G connectivity will help with coverage.

I know it will be behind in terms of screen quality, screen resolution, and cameras, but a lot of people out there can deal with the lower specs because of the iOS ecosystem.

If this is true, it is terrible for the accessibility community.
Many voiceover users strongly prefer devices with home buttons. It helps people with no vision to find the bottom of the device quickly and to navigate to the home screen and app switcher with much more accuracy. Apple is well aware of this fact.
I’ll be surprised if they discontinue the home button on every model. Voiceover users are a large market. The V.A. provides veterans who lost their sight in combat with apple devices, and a lot of occupational therapists recommend apple because of its accessibility support.
But I suppose progress will march on despite the objections of late adopters.

Small is a byproduct of being low-cost. Few people actually want a small device.
Small works much better with a case. I don’t care about a big screen if it breaks every time I drop it. The current SE is already on the chunkier side. Took a while to adjust from the nimble 5s form factor 1st gen SE.

So basically a XR with a spec bump

Why does everyone assume it’s an Xr, when the 11 also had an LCD screen.
