The SE is the best phone they've ever made (for me). Their latest range are like massive tablet toys.

I really do like my XR, but for its tech and not for the size... if they updated the SE line again, that sweet XR would become a WiFi only device as soon as I had unboxed the SE2. Not holding my breath (which is why I did get an XR).

My SE has become the equivalent of an updated iPod touch (and it's very find indeed at that compared to the old 5th gen I had of those)... so I'm not going to hand that SE on to a neighborhood kid or to nextgen kin as I usually do when I have updated my Apple gear.

I think it's a combination of low price and small form factor that everyone loves about this phone.

Definitely. It makes me think of the iPad mini, Apple ultimately left behind the smaller form factor that we all appreciate, and have moved on the larger displays, but that’s not what everybody wants. I think Apple is under the notion that by expanding their product line by offering phones with a 4 inch display and an iPad mini, it offers something for everyone. So hopefully we see the mini refreshed in 2019, and maybe an SE 2 as well.

Agreed. I love big phones. But do we really need 3 new big phones every year? Why not 1 of the 3 in the small, SE form factor with updated internals? Seems like good business sense to me?

They're testing the waters. If the clearance models keep selling they'll see there's still a market for them. Potentially bring it back.

I seriously doubt that.

Apple has plenty of data that tells them what the demand is for a small form factor phone and how much money they can make off of it and whether it's worth an investment. They likely have the data for both a new device (reduced bezels) in that form factor and updated internals in the current SE chassis.

I think the big trouble with small form factor phones is that it becomes hard to market it as a premier/expensive device. Otherwise we'd see a Google Pixel in a small form factor as well.

And things are further complicated given that if we want to have good quality components -- speakers, cameras, microphones, etc. -- it actually costs more to make them smaller. Think about the compromises made with the 12" MB. Yet when it comes to pricing, people expect to pay in proportion to screen size. There may be a few customers here or there that will pay a premium for a small phone, but by and large, if you offer two screen sizes at the same price, nearly everyone is going to pick the larger one.

Se is outdated
I guess it depends on your point of view....

I have an SE, it gets good battery life, plenty fast for what I do with it, runs iOS 12, takes good photos, and has plenty of storage.

For $250, it is great for someone that doesn't want a large phone, expensive phone, or maybe just wants a spare.

I am probably not going to get another iPhone for myself unless my SE dies, or there is a suitable replacement.

I’m curious what they will inevitably do with a second-generation SE. Will it utilize the XR design or stick to the older design for cost savings and familiarity with its target audience? Either way, the SE was a hit and has a place in the lineup.

I prefer the current SE design over all other iPhones, and not just because of the size. It’s better to hold and to apply a glass screen protector. All they need to do is update the internals and bring back the black they had on the iPhone 5. Much nicer than Space Grey. Project Red would also be a good option.

Yeah. It’s a nice budget phone. After buying xs max, i realized that i don’t need all these new feature phones, especially with the price.

It doesn’t make sense that Apple would be sitting on a sizable inventory of an older piece of gear and suddenly start to clearance them out. That’s not how production and inventory works these days, particularly for Apple, one of the masters of efficiency.
