Is the battery life really that bad? I currently have the SE which barely lasts me 3 hours of constant use. On any normal day before quarantine I’d be out of the house at 8 am and home at 7 - 9 pm, so I’d always have to have a charger on me which got tedious and now I want to upgrade for when things get back to normal. I don’t need a super amazing battery life, just one that gets me through the day.

I was waiting for the new SE to come out since that seemed to be the perfect price point, but over here it’s €500 and everyones saying the battery life isnt good.. which was the whole reason I want to upgrade. Now I’m seriously considering upgrading to an XR/11 instead just for that battery life even though its specs are definitely overkill for my usage.

That’s not the intended audience, though. It is intended for those still on the 7 or earlier.

I'd disagree. This is just Apple throwing a phone out there that costs them absolutely zero to make to see how many people will buy it because they've slapped a new name on it. "Instead of calling it the iPhone 8 like we've been doing let's call it the iPhone SE and treat it like a spectacular new phone." That's all this is, a cheap cash grab. I love Apple products but I'm not blind to the fact that they are really trying to squeeze people here with a really garbage update to a phone that was already very dated.

Honestly, it's not worth upgrading over the iPhone 8.

SE vs. iPhone 8, it has the A13 vs. the A11, slightly better battery life, portrait mode, other small camera/video enhancements and faster LTE and Wifi. Considering this SE is superior to the iPhone 8, which came out 2 years ago with an MSRP of $300 higher, this is is still a solid upgrade for folks on a budget (perfect for the current economy). As many others have noted, Apple isn't expecting iPhone 8 customers to upgrade to this SE, but even if they did, it would still be effectively a bigger upgrade of going from an X to a XS.

Its going to be bettery than your current SE but isn't going to last you a full day. The 8's battery life wasn't very good but I'd suspect this to be slightly better. So you will get way more than you are currently getting but still poor battery life for a new phone in 2020.

If the battery and weight are the same as the 8, I bet they didn’t remove the 3D Touch module and just deactivated it.

Also, this shows the A13 isn’t all that efficient as it was marketed to be, and the very large majority if the battery life increases we saw in the 11 Pro series were increased battery sizes.

Except they did this before with the first SE. Apple is relatively weak in emerging markets like India, and this is competitive now. There are also lots of people who just want a phone for whom this is a relatively cheap option.

I don’t know about that statement though. Was the original 2016 SE that was priced at ~$399 competitive in India? It seems their segment is mainly android, with devices around the ~$200 price-range, which would be half the price of the iPhone SE. So I don’t think it’s really all that ‘competitive’ in India, but more of a ‘global phone’ in general.

No, Apple removed touch id. edit(3D touch). Why include a component, which has a cost to manufacture and then not use it.

The number one way for better battery life is a bigger battery. Android shows us that. Without any knowledge of how much current the internals use and how the power management features all come together, it's tough to make a wet finger in the air statement about the A13 not being efficient.

Former iPhone 8 owner here. That battery was THE WORST apple has ever put out. Small, overheated constantly and the wireless seemed to take FOREVERRRR. returned one for a bad coil. Beautiful deep red color, terrible battery.
Your experience mirrors mine almost exactly. I had to get my battery replaced when I got a notice that it wasn't working correctly. I also have the red color - one of the reasons why I initially bought it - but the overall experience with this phone is not the best I've had with Apple.

I was really hoping that the iPhone SE would fix some of these problems - and maybe they will - but with even lower estimated battery life than the 8 and no ultra wide band chip, I may just have to keep my 8 a little while longer, especially with a replaced battery. I'll wait for the reviews before ultimately deciding, but this is looking like a "meh" right now.

Touch ID? I think you mean 3D Touch, as that member alluded to the ‘3D Touch module’ Being attached, but dormant in the sense that it’s not being used/deactivated.

But a ‘tear down’ this week should show us if it includes it or not, which I suspect it probably doesn’t.

In Europe, it's between 479 and 499 euros, in my opinion, it is worthy to put a bit more and get the Xr
It's a nice update, the same kind of update between the 2018 iPad Pro and the 2020, you get more for less, always nice

I'd buy a Xr today as the price difference is not that much, but the SE will eventually be cheaper, and will be a great upgrade for people with the 6s or 7.

depends on your usage and apps. with a daily average of about three to four hours of usage according to screentime, the battery holds around a day on my 1 1/2 years old iphone 8 (meaning around 14 hours). battery health is at 87%. on the other hand using a phone for 3-4 hours for every 14 hours... seems pretty crazy to me. i think i have to dial down my consumption before i complain about battery life.

all in all, it‘s not great and probably the second most disappointing apple battery since my ipad air 2 and 3 (my original ipad lasted about double the time)

I think that the SE has a couple of target audiences...

1. Those that want a smaller screen.
2. Those that want an inexpensive phone.

I think this new SE hit both of those targets very nicely.

Although, calling this a smaller screen is like calling me at 5' 10" petite. I wouldn't call my iPhone 8 small, I would call my older 5S a smaller screen. I wanted an SE-sized phone 2 years ago but bit the bullet and got an 8, I learned to live with it but I was forced to, due to availability.

I would’ve thought they would’ve put a bigger battery in it like they did with every other new phone they removed the 3D Touch layer from.. but sounds like they probably just used the same body and there’s now wasted space
How much space do you think the 3D Touch layer took? iirc it was less than 0.5mm but maybe someone has definitive numbers.

In any case, it’s a budget iPhone, and the way to keep costs low isn’t to design and build a battery that’s barely bigger than it was.

I had the exact same model and I have to agree. I loved the red, but my face would also go red when I'd realise the battery was constantly down to 30-40% after a full night's charge and a mere couple hours of careful use. The battery was roughly a year old when I stepped into an Apple Store and requested a swap, during a trip to Japan last April, because I was worried ending up stranded without a working phone in a foreign country. It didn't help much. I still miss the deep red but the battery and performance of the 11 Pro were worth the stylistic trade-off.

Basically the new SE is an iPhone 7 with Bluetooth 5, fast/wireless charging and a faster chip.

Amazing!
You should all praise it, fall in love with it, rush out and buy it, tell all your friends and family to do the same.

Not to mention another 5 years of guaranteed software updates. iPhone 7 should stop getting the latest OS in the next two years.

This really does blow out of the water anything else in this price range from other makers in terms of features and guaranteed software life cycle.

I guess you meant iPhone 8, with a faster SoC, better camera, 3GB RAM and WiFi 6. And for only $399? As you say, amazing!

Yes, people will buy it, love it, praise it and tell everyone they know! What’s not to love lol?

Before the pandemic, it was expected to sell 40 million units the first year. I wouldn’t be surprised if that turns out to be 50-60 million instead.

How come the battery is the same but now with more efficient CPU and software Apple advertised that the SE lasts 1 hour or so less than the 8? Something doesn't add up.

do NOT use the wireless charging on it :)
I have an iPhone 11 Pro max and I use only the 5V small charger.
My wife started using wireless charging on hers and her battery health dropped 4%. Mine is still at 100%
I have an iPhone 8 Plus purchased on February 2019, I use wireless charging a lot, battery health is still on 99%.

Really disappointed with both RAM and Battery size, hoping for 4 GB and 2300mAh range sizes respectively.
