It's actually even more impressive, seeing as how the SE is the same thing a year later with just 32/128gb bumps from 16/64gb models, never really SE 2nd gen, just a re-release.

Well, it's technically an iPhone 6s with a couple older specs, like the fingerprint reader and the front-facing camera, in the body of a 5s (so its screen and battery, naturally).

It actually shares more in common with the 5S than the 6S, so I wouldn't call it an "iPhone 6S with a couple older specs". A "5S with a couple newer specs" is much more accurate. The only similarities between the 6S and the SE are the processor and rear camera. And Apple Pay, though that's really a 6 feature.

Having had the 4, 4s and now 5s, I will probably wait out to see if they will upgrade, and if not, will more than likely buy the SE.I don't need a lot of storage as my iPad Air does my heavier lifting in regards to content.
Don't care for the larger phones and do like the headphone jack. And the new whatever they call the 10th Anniversary model, not going to pay what is rumored to be big bucks.

I'd go off SoC which is A9 which is 6s class

And optics

Form is undeniably 5s and screen too and front facing and gen 1 Touch ID

But it's a 6s in an 5s
Not the other way around

Apple made a hit for people that simply dont want big phones, on a limited budget, and/or people who want big nad small phones and are big iPhone fans with a bit extra coin for a cheaper iPhone than the flagship

Three successful demographics with the...
IPhone Mini

How well Samsung are doing is the bigger surprise to me.
This is the US market. Many other Android brands, especially the Chinese ones, are barely present or does not exist at all. Most people probably equate Android with Samsung. Considering Samsung's big budget in marketing, other Android OEMs pretty much don't have a chance.

The SE will definitely not get a refresh this year outside the storage bump. Luckily it has the A9, so it is on the same stage as the 6S. I hope Apple update the SE lineup.
Or to make it easy, I wish Apple would just release one iPhone with three different screen sizes. That way, consumers don't have to pick and choose whether they get the latest hardware just because they don't want larger screen.

It's definitely not the other way around, I'll give you that. It wouldn't make since. But there's a reason why it's not part of the 6 family- because it's not simply a "smaller 6S".

It's missing the 6S's:
  • Form factor
  • Screen- size, resolution, dual domain, etc.
  • Front facing camera
  • Faster WiFi
  • Barometer
  • 2nd gen touch I'd
  • Oh, and the 6S's "biggest" feature: 3D Touch
If you're going by speed or camera alone, sure- it's like a 6S. But when it's missing a majority of the 6S's features then I think it's very inaccurate to call it a small 6S.

Of course now we're just diving into pointless semantics but it is MacRumors lol.

In an ideal apple world that would be awesome

Lack of 3D Touch doesn't bother me

And I dunno if it's the fastest wifi chip but my internet is 200 down and SE pulls it off with AirPort Extreme on ac.

I wish specs of screen contrast wise were modern. I'm ok with all other aspects

Form factor is the appeal of SE too in part
I personally much prefer it to perhaps a shrunk iPhone 6

Personal preference on that tho but being 5s design is awesome

Flat camera back too
Chamfered edges
Mechanical home button

I like the digital one on 7+ but I like having both personally too since I got two phones

This is where it laps 6s: Battery life

A9 pushing that low res screen! It's got good efficiency in real world use
And fast charging too since a small capacity battery

I love the form factor of the SE, but geez it sucks being punished specs wise because of this. I wish I could have the flagship iPhone at this size instead lagging a couple gens behind. It bums me Apple doesn't do it.

This time last year it wasn't so

6s and SE six months after that

I liked that cadence

iPhone SE = niche product

It is in some respects. But there is a strong following for the four-inch iPhone demographic. When you consider how large smart phones are in today's world, some just want the convenience of portability and mobility. And Apple did a nice job adopting some of the latest features from the iPhone 6s.

Furthermore, I think Apple was smart to release a 4 inch iPhone, retaining that demographic in their ecosystem and they are one of the only few phone manufacturers to still sell a four-inch smart phone.

I don't have any interest in a big screen phone. I'm a short-ish person with small thumbs. And I like to keep my phone in a reasonablely sized pocket instead of a man-purse or belt holster. With the trend of larger and larger phones, I've honestly considered trying to bring back the fanny-pack back as a main-stream clothing accessory.

I'm not trying to skip out on having a real computer by tweening myself into a phablet. If I need a bigger screen I go to full 13" or 15" laptop/tablet... with a x86_64 processor. If I need bigger I sit down at the tower and its multi-monitor array.

Still considering an Android phone to replace the now fully aged 4S. Been moving increasingly away from Apple in general because they've stopped offering anything I care about, at a price point/value I care about.

No tower (trash can doesn't count), no MacMini, meh specs on laptops for price, tablets that can't compete (price/performance/utility) with WinTel 2-in-1 or full table PCs.

Maybe Apple will woo me back with an upgraded SE, that isn't just a dumping ground for their outdated supply chain parts. They could really woo me back with a real tower (that can take user added/upgraded parts), a fully upgraded MacMini (for home server use), and a Tablet-Mac (with ports and MacOS).

I know Steve Jobs liked the quote about skating where the puck will be, but this can be taken too far.

Yep yep, especially when you're so far out ahead of the puck you're offside. Apple has been "offside" for about 5 or so years, depending on when you start counting.

The SE is by far the best phone deal that one can make with Apple. It has a price point that feels right for what you get and it does everything that a mobile phone owner needs.
Besides that its design is far better than all those 6 and 7 Android clones (I currently own a 6). And hey, it has a headphone port.

Will be my next iPhone. The times have changed and smartphones became boring, so I'm not willed to pay a thousand bucks for a small iteration of something that already went in the wrong direction.

While the SE undoubtedly did score good customer satisfaction results, taking the crown, it is hardly anything to brag about.

Samsung's satisfaction ratings are insignificantly worse, practically on the same level.

The times of "crappy android phones" are pretty much over.

It's nice to read on here that other tech nerds / power users are proud SE owners. I have no desire to use anything with a larger form factor (one-handed use, duh), but my friends make fun of me for having a "backwards" phone. "Omg what is that, an iPhone 4?" Roll my damn eyes.

I own both an SE and 7plus. Love them both. Both powerful and stylish.

I skipped the iPhone 6 series and thank god I did. The 6 series is as close as Apple should ever get to tacky Android industrial design. And that goes for the gaudy Samsung Galaxy phones that only tasteless tech nerds could like.

The 6 is tacky android industrial design, though your 7 plus is not? And is instead stylish?? I'm confused.....given the 7 IS the 6 design..... is it the colour that fixes the tacky android design of the 6?

Common sense that people who would be unhappy with a smaller screen are not going to buy the iPhone 5. It would be a bit stupid to say "I bought a phone with a smaller screen, and now I'm unhappy with the screen size".

In addition it would be a bit stupid to say "I bought the $350 phone and it doesn't have everything the $700 phone has". Well obviously not.

You mean the camera bump gives you love on the 7+ and the 6+ is tasteless? Aha.

Except of the black color what else is different? And don't tell me the missing headphone jack :)
