And it is only gonna get „worse“. I was in Singapore, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong recently and the hardware of these phones there make iPhone look like the Nokia of 2025. Needless to say, I returned with my first ever Oppo device (not even sold here in Germany).

Apple is lucky they got most people in the west hooked on their locked in ecosystem
I flat out refuse to buy and support a Chinese phone manufacturer. Especially with the rhetoric they use against my country Australia.

Maybe because Xiaomis and Huaweis are made to last just one year?🤣
Just for fun I had bought a Tecno phone recently. It is cheap and ugly as f, but I wanted to see what’s all the fuss about. While modified Chinadroid works ok, phone will nag you with updates each and every second – nice way to bring obsolescence and bugs, and no one will even notice. At this point it is the reality, not even some “conspiracy theory”. Even Koreans do that, you buy Samsung TV and after 3 years of autoupdates the SmartTV is bricked laggard, good if you got Apple TV but not understandable to me that you basically “subscribe to 3 year plan”.
Techno is totally not representative for decent brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, HND, Motorola, Huawei, etc. You could have saved yourself even more money and by one by Welcome ;)

When buying a model for your market they have to oblige by the same consumer protection regimes and commit to ongoing updates.
I mean, what? Chinese shareholders are happy, sales go up, customers have no say. I guess we will never get data on how premium Chinese phones sell.

I still use my old iPhone 11 Pro. It is almost 5 years old! It blows most 300$ Chinese phones out of the water in terms of app performance, camera quality and build/design. Chinese phones are the reason why climate change exists
Sure, but your iPhone 11 Pro wasn't $300 ;) You can get a really good Motorola that blows it out of the water. Except for the eco system.
I will so be glad when foldable die out.
You don't have to buy them, why be happy when others who do, no longer have the choice?

I don't know, I've got the 16 Pro Max, upgraded from my 13 Pro. And it's not like wow. There are no foldable options either. It looks still exactly the same. Quite thick. The camera's are more natural in default processing, but zoom isn't great really. And when pixelpeeping 1:1 it truly falls apart. Hardware wise, I've got access to a S25 Ultra and that is miles ahead, but requires more playing with the settings to tame the oversaturation. Also sound and airpods and protocols for hi-defintion quality audio they are lagging behind.

I prefer the thinner more rectangular look, but I appreciate that is subjective.

Did I mention foldable options? Where is apple with a clamshell and full size foldable with amazing hardware?
Hmmm
I loved my 13 Pro, then I upgraded to the 15 pro and that was much better and lighter, so I fail to see how a 16 pro Max is not a Wow?
However, every iPhone is only a wow, for a week, after that, we do the same things as we did on the older one, they're just slightly better and slightly quicker, but that soon becomes the norm and then we think, why did I upgrade? 🤣 (that's just human nature) the grass always seems greener on the other side.

Foldables, are a niche product, don't sell very well at all, not sure why Apple would want to enter that space?

Yeah it was something close to 1300$ I guess, don’t remember the exact price. Basically 300$/year. But why create e-waste by buying new phone every year? Also, as a plus, the old iPhone doesn’t just die after these years, I still get some use of those old phones such as taking photos, storing data instead of flash drives or just donate to someone in need, thanks to build quality it actually lasts

Smartphones are a commodity device now, there is a feature parity, the iPhone does not have anything special or exclusive anymore, except the locked down ecosystem (and I would say the animations and motion is still ahead of Android), which for many is actually a disadvantage, so other properties come into play.

Given everything else is pretty much the same, the Chinese are choosing to support the domestic brands. The current political situation just exasperates that, I expect the Q2 results to be even worse.

Bc like AI, it’s overhyped and I’m so tired of hearing about it.

Let it go the way of 3d phones.

Unfortunately Apple is entering that space.

That being said I’d probably buy an Apple foldable.

But Android foldable are gimmicky and all hype

Eh I wouldn’t be too sure. The 16e seems to be quite popular.

If I wasn’t locked into the Apple ecosystem, I also would have switched or at least trialed another device.
This is sort of where I’m at. I’d be willing to try something else, but Apple has done an Amazing job with the ecosystem. Between HomeKit, Apple TVs, MacBook, iPads, iCloud…switching to something else sounds very daunting.

I can't speak for Xiaomi, but Huawei make excellent phones. I still have a P30 pro that I drag out every so often, and it's still great 6 years on. In fact, to be honest I prefer the UI to my current Samsung. It, or some other Huawei, would still be my daily driver if there wasn't a great big crack in the screen and the US hadn't driven Huawei out of the market in Europe and the US. The cameras are still superb, and while they have been surpassed by this stage, it's not by much.

Obviously if you buy a cheap phone it will be poor, but the higher end phones are fantastic.

I'm not surprised. Even as a lifelong Apple owner/user I can't help but look with envy. When you see what Xiaomi is producing like with the 15 Ultra, of Oppo with the Find N5 that is some amazing kit. Sure the software is running a bit behind in polish, but also catching up rapidly. Or even when you take a look at how Samsung UI7 introduced on the S25 Ultra is progressing and integrating AI well and not just do emoji updates, they are taking the software to another level. Similarly with plain Android and Gemini integrations.

Apple is running behind on the hardware, and on the software. Where they still have the edge, just, is eco system integration. But with the global drive to move away from US services I can't see that lasting long. And the same is happening with Android hardware that is being de-googled.

Very interesting times ahead for us consumers.
I'm glad you mention that, using Google services on a Chinese brand phone (outside of China of course) or another country is not moving away from US big tech.

So Korean or Netherlands then? Who else makes phones?
When the commenter said, "Chinese phone manufacturer", I think the commenter meant a company headquartered in China (e.g., Xiaomi, OPPO, Honor, Huawei), rather than avoiding anything made in China. Companies like Apple, Samsung, Sony, LG, and Asus would not be considered "Chinese phone manufacturers".

The hardware is still very competitive in my opinion. I do agree though, that Apple should open up their operating systems more to allow competing services to co-exist in their ecosystem. Because of the numerous restrictions Apple has put in place to protect their services business, Apple devices are becoming less useful and sometimes even annoying to deal with.
The EU is saving apple and they don’t realize it

"Apple has now had seven straight quarters of decline."

That is a bad trend for any company that makes a good chunk of their profit in China. My guess is this, more than anything is what is prompting apple to (allegedly) make their first folding phone next year. Apple needs to give Chinese consumers something new to consider.

I've just changed over from a 15 Pro to an S25+. What would you recommend changing in the camera settings? Haven't really used it yet. Already changed the display palette to natural from vivid which looks better.

“Apple has now had seven straight quarters of decline.” This is why you should never trust this kind of studies (also the positive ones). Apple announced iPhone sales grew in China in Q2 2024. This is false.
Cook said that iPhone sales increased during that quarter, but revenue was still down YoY. Comparisons are always made YoY due to the seasonal cycle.

Not surprised. Smartphone makers around the globe have surpassed Apple when it comes to hardware of their devices. People want more than the same old slab that Apple has been churning out year after year.
Even though Apple devices have the fastest chips and FaceID that is more secure than other companies Authentication they are lagging behind other companies hardware….does that not sound ridiculous? I’m not saying there aren’t some really nice options if iOS is boring to you, but with the exception of folding devices I don’t see what metric Apple devices aren’t at least equal.
