My iPhone was stolen on Saturday night. I reported it to the police but we all know I'll never see it again.

I went to Apple store on Sunday morning to buy a new iPhone and asked if I could give them the serial number in case the thief ever brought it in to get fixed and the guy said "We don't do that. I'ts not our responsibility. If the thief brought it in we would have to service it as if it was there phone. We're not the police." ..............

He said all this as he was charging my card for another £600 for a new iPhone. I never expected any sort of compensation from Apple. I should have insured it but I didn't because I still wasnt sure if I was keeping it or not. But I am appalled that they can't even take down a serial number and report it to the police. Apple products are not cheap and the service does not match the price of the products. Unfortunately, I love the iPhone so I have no choice but to put up with it.

Its not their job to be your personal record keeper. Maybe you should be more careful with your stuff and the places and people you hang out with.

If you lose your credit cards, maybe call Apple for back ups?

Why would Apple make a stolen iPhone database when they can make money by selling you MobileMe and its "Find My iPhone" feature?

What if the thief sells it to someone else, should the buyer really be punished because the seller originally stole the phone? No I don't think so.

So you're proposing that people who buy stolen goods (even unknowingly) should be allowed to keep them? If a person walks into an Apple Store trying to get service for a stolen phone, that phone should not be returned to the original, rightful owner? The buyer of the stolen phone should get to keep it? Sorry, that's not how it usually works with stolen goods.

There have been cases in Toronto of thieves stealing high-end baby strollers off people's front porches and selling them on Craigslist. Several strollers have been recovered from the people who unknowingly bought the stolen strollers. Unfortunately for those buyers, they bought stolen goods and they don't get to keep them; the original owners get their goods back, sorry.

And everyone, if your credit cards are stolen, for God's sake don't report it to your credit card company or the police. What, is it their fault your credit cards were stolen? God forbid you should tell the credit card company so that they can notify the police when the thief uses your credit card to buy something. I mean, the employees at the store where the credit card was used are not going to stop the thief from leaving the store, so what's the point? Stop wasting your credit card company's and the police's time!

I do live in America and where I got this idea was from a guy who lived next door to me who was either Scottish or Irish(don't remember which) and was insistent that Scotland/Ireland was not a part of Europe, that it was Great Britain. I never checked into it, obviously. Oh well.

To be fair, we do refer to continental Europe as "Europe" so your neighbour was probably just saying Scotland and Ireland are not part of "the continent" because these are on separate islands (and culture, mindset, etc.).

I suppose it's similar to how someone from Hawaii or Alaska would refer to the continental US.

That said, Great Britain, Ireland and Iceland are still part of the European Union and governed by European law. And geographically, we must be part of one of the seven continent and for us that is Europe.

No.

If I lose my credit card I report it to the company who trace charges and report it to the police to try and help catch the thieves.

Are people on here actually suggesting I shouldn't have even reported a crime?! Like I'm wasting police time? I'm in shock over the complete lack of community on these forums.

Whoever said I mis-worded the title of the thread is correct. It does not change the content of the thread though.

Yeah, why should you report it? If your credit card was stolen and you tried to report it, how do the police know it was actually stolen? Maybe you're just reporting it stolen so you can go on a shopping spree and tell the credit card company the thief used the card. Don't waste the cops' time reporting stupid things like a theft being committed, you silly person!

Lol. I sincerely hope that is sarcasm

man apple is just ruining your life huh. Why buy any more of their products with so much animosity floating around?

I was saying "typical" of my luck.

It's obviously not Apple's fault there are no bumpers in store. I have no animosity towards Apple. This is just one proceedure I wish they had in place that could help us all out if we ever have our phones stolen.

Was your phone actually 'stolen'? Or did you leave it somewhere and some one picked it up?

I find that most people who say their phones are stolen actually Lost their phones rather than it being stolen from them.

But they do. Mobile me an find my iPhone are services tha Apple offer for a yearly subscription.

I'm not sure what you mean but my phone was sitting with me when it was stolen.

Were you robbed or you sat it down next to you and didn't pay attention when someone snatched it?

I don't know about your country, but American Express (or equivalent) card offers 90 days protection against theft. Consider getting one if it's available in your country and use it next time.

and in this case you reported it to your network who disabled the phone and that was the correct action. Since it is much more likely whoever has the phone will call the network to get the phone activated then that they will bring it to apple for service the network is the best place to deal with the stolen phone. I doubt Apple could add a whole lot to the situation.

I'm pretty sure that Apple flags stolen laptops etc. also. Im surprised they didn't flag the device.

I don't know of any other company that does this so why the outrage at Apple? Sure it would be great but I doubt many thieves would bring in the device for service. More likely the people who unknowingly bought on ebay.

When I lost my iPod years ago they took down my serial number for the exact reason you wanted them to. It showed up later, someone had turned it in to them :)

Isn't this service effectively covered by the EMEI number? If you report a phone as stolen, the carrier can lock the EMEI number and block any sim card from any phone from being used, effectively rendering the iphone useless, even if it's jailbroken. Won't help you with getting your iphone back but feel better knowing the little pikeys can't use it.

There is a programme for macs called undercover that registers if a stolen mac with this programme is bought into an apple store. The programme fakes that the mac is broken, prompting someone to bring it in to get fixed, and apple confiscate it and call the police. If apple have the right to (and do this) then surely they can do it with an iphone. There is an iphone app as well but i don't think it works as well as the mac version as it doesn't have enough control over the phone.

I'm not trying to rip into you....I'm just curious.

Can you explain further how it was stolen? I mean, I have my phone in my pocket or I'm using it....were you robbed or pick pocketed?

This exactly how it happened. I made a phonecall. Set my phone at my leg, literally an inch from my leg. And my friend was sitting at the other side of it. I put my hand down to lift my phone and it was gone. There had been people walking by where I was sitting and in the space of about 5 seconds it was gone.

And yes, I shouldn't have left it down but ifs and buts won't help now. So I guess it would be classified as robbed since they never actually took it from my bag. But whoever did it was well trained because I didn't see or feel anything.

Crazy. I've had students at school lose their phones (leave it in a class or cafeteria) and later claim it was Stolen. So I was just curious.

Sounds like someone saw your phone sitting there and targeted you. Sucks.

Hope you enjoy your new one.
