I don’t know who the target audience is, and I doubt Apple do either. It has no genuine USP.

It’s the sort of product you’ll look at out of curiosity in the Apple Store, but have no compulsion to even consider purchasing.
The buyer is me. I hate Face ID and have been holding onto my SE 3, and my mini is my favorite Apple product.

But there are dozens of us. No idea why they’re making it. Figure I better be first in line when these things are released so I don’t miss my chance.

So the new Ultra can fit a 7.7inch inner screen, a 5.3-inch outer display, two rear cameras, one front camera, and a Touch ID power button.

But not Face ID

What’s the big showstopper with Face-ID? I thought it just used the camera!

This is a strange story. I read this as meaning that this phone would solve some problems in general, not problems with other folding phone implementations. So this was click bait, methinks.
That’s exactly what I thought when I read that title. I have no interest in this device, either… especially not at this predicted price point.

How much? 3000? Knowing Apple they always add a zero more
So u saying it should be $300?

Show me a $300 high end, reputable brand, flip phone - with Apples security, support, quality of parts and refinement - and I will buy it immediately.

If you cant - then what u talking about?

I don't think it's solving anything there. Point #1 says that crease will be reduced but visible, so it's not solved. Point #2, why the hell a squarish form factor is good for movies or gaming when 16/9 is the standard in both cases?
Exactly. I would expect this device will be very niche. But probably Apple will figure out to add some exclusive cool feature so more people will still want it.

Can’t wait to see this go through the bend test
You really think people will try to fold it the other direction to close it? Or try to put it in the pocket when it’s open? Though I guess I would be interested to know what happens when it’s face-down on the couch and you accidentally sit on it. Can’t think of any other realistic bend scenarios …

You don’t even have to choose. You can get an iPhone 17 Pro, a MacBook Neo and a base iPad for cheaper.

There’s a lot of combos of very good Apple devices you can get for $2k.
True, of course, but I would want a single device that is bigger and smaller than a 17 Pro Max at the same time.

A less visible crease will be good. However with foldable durability is a huge concern. Repair costs will be high even with AppleCare. Waiting to see the foldable. Lack of FaceID and telephoto lens will be disappointing.

The problem with these 2in1 devices is they inevitably end up being worse than having an individual device.

Case in point I had a 13 inch iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard but found that it made the iPad a worse tablet as it was too big and with the MKB a worse laptop as it would fall over too much.

So went back to laptop and separate iPad and much happier.

I imagine this will be a worse phone and worse tablet but I guess we’ll see unlike others on here I tend not to pass judgement until I actually see it in use.

someone please explain to me what problem a square screen solves

it adds precious little for watching movies or reels

genuine question

The only two probems this will solve is :

1) you have money bruning your pockets and want to get rif of it the most flashy way
2) you have Android envy but you're trapped too deep in Apple ecosystem to jump to a Fold or any other equivalent.

Yet another "new" Apple product that will propably miss its target, like the iPhone Air the homepod or the Vison pro. Sigh.

Who wants 2 iPhone Airs stuck together?
For 2.5x's the price.
Wouldn’t it be three iPhone Air screens, two iPhone Air form factors, and connecting bend, etc for approximately 2.5x the price. Minus FaceID and include an extra rear camera depending on the trade-off but add TouchID (some still prefer it), then you have the iOS/iPadOS combined experience and that is what one is paying for.

Wouldn’t bullet point 1 and possibly 2 just be related to some people jealousy. Someone had the disposable income and I don’t so I think this is an overpriced bad idea and on the second bullet point why does it bother anyone if another Apple customer want a foldable phone which may also attract new customer from the Android ecosystem.

Ah the collective MR pessimistic prior to release product train, it never gets old.

My only issue with some foldable phone is the asymmetry when it’s closed, one one side it’s rounded corners and the other a squared-off corners. Why not just make it all squared-off like some Sony phones and have a symmetric look to it.

I am sure there is a solution to this problem to have all rounded corners but maybe the technology is not there yet or it has yet to be revealed.
