The general consensus from those who've done it is yes.

Correct.
Their system is supposed to do it automaticly as soon as they enter your IMEI in, the replacement iphone should carry the some properties as the one you're handing in.
Unlocked or locked to AT&T or whatever carrier etc....
I would make sure to tell the Apple rep that the phone is carrier unlocked and wouldnt hurt to bring in a Tmobile sim to test out cause you know people do make mistakes at times.

I unlocked both of my 4'S with unlock-fusion without any issues. I got my daughter a iPhone 5 yesterday and checked her IMEI and it shows unlocked.

if i buy verizon iphone 5 it comes unlocked. will i be able to just go to AT&T and use it. and what will be limitations. do i want to activate first on verizon? or no.

From what Ive read you can use it on ATT but wont get LTE service, just 3G/HSPA+.

Well I use the link provided before and after with my 4'S. Do you have another source besides installing a T-Mobile sim?

No, all of the IMEI checkers are hit and miss with the iPhone 5. The fact that your brand new iPhone 5 (assuming you didn't buy an unlocked model) shows unlocked is a perfect example.

So I have read this entire thread and still am unclear of the benifit of unlocking my phone.

My situation:
*Sprint service, locked phone.
*Dont travel much.

Would taking the time to unlock my iPhone5 give me any benifit?

No, he doesnt unlock Sprint iphones.
Sprint can unlock your iphone but only for international use. So even if they unlock it you cant use your sprint i5 with any other US carrier.
And since you dont travel out of the US then for you its pointless.

thanks. do i open box and activate it first?

Yes, you can open it and activate it at any time.
The verizon i5 will work with any GSM sim and will activate fine anywhere.

I went ahead and did this and it works flawlessly and exactly as described. Cool! Will certainly be useful if/when I travel overseas :)

Now to just hope I didn't violate my warranty or anything, haha. I don't believe this does, though, especially with reports of devices being swapping out after having them unlocked. I know jailbreaking and unlocking back in the day would void the warranty but this doesn't do anything to the software in the phone like back in 2008/2009 and the iPhone 3G.

My ATT subsidized iPhone 5 said unlocked from the IMEI checker, but after inserting a Tmobile SIM, I was greeted by a non carrier SIM message.

Fast forward $5 later, from an eBay unlock, the same Tmobile SIM is now working.

Thanks to everyone!

Another +1 for UnlockFusion.

Found one actually, charging £100 to do it  Others as well but not a lot of feedback and even they want like like £60 and one wants £77

Yes, some of them companies are really strict so unlocks are hard to come by.
I noticed some canadian carriers the same. There's only 1-2 sellers and they ask like $100. As you can see less competition the higher the prices will be.
For AT&T there's hundreds and more sellers competing and selling the same service and prices are dirt cheap.

I was thinking this exact thing earlier today. Where were all these unlocks a year ago when I needed them?!?!

I'm wondering if one of two things might happen:

1) The carriers start locking their systems down and the cheap unlocks go away
2) Locking in general becomes a thing of the past

----------

AT&T unlocked the 4S earlier today for free. Debating unlocking the 5 now just in case this all dries up.

I personally think item #2 will become more of the norm going into the future, my theory is they can all raise the ETF fee to Like $500, so if you think you are going to join, get the sub price, then quit it will be painful. Personally in EU they are all unlocked so they should be here in the USA

Did you buy a "sim free" iPhone 5 from CPW like me?

No it is from T-Mobile, bought it from from another forum. I've rang T-Mobile up and they said they would do it but I've heard a lot of stories of them saying one thing and then not doing it so I'm not entirely convinced myself. Hopefully they will though

It is actually for my dad this phone, I've already got an unlocked iPhone I bought direct from Apple!

Yes, I tried with mine, but they're saying the IMEI dosen't exist!

Have now written to their complaints dept to get it sorted.
