I can vouch for these guys:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Permanent-F...712?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4abcb775a0

And the price has now gone down to $5.39.

I got my code in about 12 hours. And I'm fully unlocked. Frankly, at these prices, it is FAR MORE economical than unlocking it for free through AT&T. I can only imagine the nightmares and frustration.

I sent out a request for an unlock on launch day to AT&T and have yet to hear back.

For $5 no hassle, I'll take it anyday. These guys are legit.

Bear in mind, all this prior to restoring iOS. On this same thread, a few pages back someone had mentioned that you will go through the activation process if iOS was not restored after unlock. This is what I experienced with 2 different SIM's.

So, I restored my phone with iOS 6 and restored my last backup. Now I tried both T-Mo SIM's again and didn't need activation at all. T-Mo signal showed up right away and was able to make/receive calls.

Thanks for the detailed information. One question though - when you said that you restored the phone, did it ask you again for your last 4 digits of SSN and your zip code? I'm asking because I bought my (activated) iPhone 5 from someone and don't have these details and I'm afraid that it will ask me these details upon restore.

confirmed that apple won't replace your phone with an unlocked model.
I asked them when they were replacing my phone and they said to talk to my carrier about getting it unlocked again.

That's not how it's worked in the past. My unlocked iPhone 4 was replaced by apple with another unlocked version.

<snip> So, I figured I didn't need to restore iOS 6 and setup my phone from an existing back up while still waiting on my T-Mo SIM to arrive.

After I received & inserted the T-Mo SIM, the phone went through the whole activation process using Wi-Fi. All went well and got T-Mo signal and was able to make/receive calls. </snip>

Is this T mobile sim card something I could use, or did you use something else?

No.
It only asks for those for the first ever activation when it's tied up to a contract. After that initial activation it never asks you again.

I unlocked my iPhone 5 by ordering the unlock from Unlock Fusion on eBay. The phone was still brand new and only activated at the Apple Store. Had not even been connected to iTunes once.

After I received the unlock confirmation, I plugged my phone to the computer and iTunes confirmed that the phone is unlocked. So, I figured I didn't need to restore iOS 6 and setup my phone from an existing back up while still waiting on my T-Mo SIM to arrive.

I have another T-Mo SIM that I cut as a micro SIM to use on my 4S, which is still active. After using my phone with my AT&T SIM for a while, out of curiosity, I cut it down to a Nano SIM and tried it on my iPhone 5 and went through the whole activation process over WiFi again. All good again after activation.

Not documented anywhere, just my experience after unlocking my iPhone 5 as I mentioned above.

I'd like to see someone try this with no WiFi before I fully accept that it will happen every time until you restore from iTunes.

I asked them when they were replacing my phone and they said to talk to my carrier about getting it unlocked again.

That's not what happened with me. Here's what happened with me:

  • Picked up my iPhone 5 from the Apple Store
  • Unlocked it with unlock_fusion
  • Found a problem with the display
  • Made a genius appointment for the next day with the Apple store
  • Had the genius take a look at it and she replaced it with a new iPhone 5 (I didn't even mentioned anything about my phone being unlocked)
  • Took it home, restored it, took out my AT&T sim, popped in a Three SIM from the UK and it still worked

My phone is still unlocked despite the replacement.

I plan on unlocking my phone and traveling with my family to Italy later this month. Can anyone recommend any prepaid data nano sims in Italy? Cost?

I see that Applejuiced has already answered your question. He is right, I was not asked for the last 4 of my SSN or my zip.

This is exactly what I used.

If you have an unlocked phone in which iOS has not been restored after unlocking, it is as simple as getting prepaid SIM and trying it yourself.

Once phone is IMEI unlocked whenever apple replaces it will be unlocked as well.

Plus YOU DO NOT need to restore in itunes to have it unlocked. you can reset network settings and that is sufficient

Does anyone know why it's so expensive to unlock a Rogers iphone5? I'm getting quotes of $150 almost.

But are people offering AT&T unlocks not risking their jobs as well?

Assuming it's an 'inside job' ordeal.

But then again, at&t did officially offer unlocks for completed contracts, so it'd probably much easier to slide through. Still, all those subsidized iPhone 5's already qualifying?

Not sure exactly how they do it but you can see hundreds of people offering AT&T iphone unlocks.
Certain carriers like rogers or others maybe 1 or 2 sellers and for really high prices.
So my guess is its way harder and stricter to get one with them or many other sellers would do it and make plenty of money.

Here's what's funny. TELUS and Bell is cheaper to unlock than Rogers even though there are way more customers on Rogers.

I unlocked my 4S via Unlock Fusion as well. I verified with with my AT&T SIM as well as my friend's T-Mobile SIM and both worked perfectly after the unlock.

Will this also work if I go to another country, say England, and buy a SIM card of another carrier there to pop into the phone? Thanks!

Any unlock from fusion Transfers to a replacement phone automatically with a replacement through apple.

A Genius told me the system does knows if the phone being replaced is unlocked; and then unlocks the replacement phone within a half hour.

Confirmed this on my unlocked swap for wifi issues.

Your phone will work with any GSM carrier in the world.

i called at&t last week. explained the the tech support guy that i've been a customer for 5+ years and i "know" that their employees are selling these unlocks for ~$5 on eBay and asked if he could just unlock it for me as a favor for a long time customer.

he told me he is well aware what is happening as well, but he could not do it for me for risk of losing his job.

so my understanding is there just must be no check and balances on the system within at&t, so it's easy for employees to just sell them right now. but if i was to specifically connect to one employee, and ask them directly, all of that information is logged somewhere... thus risking his/her job.

Yes, that's what an unlocked phone does.
It works with any carriers GSM sim.
