Apple is coming out with a new phone in 5 months and the AT&T REPS know about it??? Yeah, and I'm testing it right now actually. 3G is awesome, battery lasts 2 hours tops, so I leave the phone in EDGE mode, and I dropped the phone and the removable battery fell out. The only reason the phone dropped in the first place was because it is so thick now (with the HDD, battery, and 3G radio) I could'nt get a good grip on it. Other than that the phone is awesome yo!

ATT people in the Valley area are telling customers to not buy an iPhone at this moment as there will be a December update. -- That is what I witnessed first hand, but did not witness any details being splurged.

I'm sure Apple would LOVE to hear this!

Yeah I told them that and they laughed (my iPhone was crashing so I had them help me fix it). They said a bunch of them were debating if they should go in to an ATT store one day soon (with out the Apple clothes) and see what they'd hear or be told.

Would love to see the faces as Steve made a stroll into the store.

You won't see a new iPhone until the summer of 2009 at the earliest. Deal with it. Your only hope is for Apple to release some iPhone Nano type product, and even then, that won't have even half the features that the current model has.

2009 is stretching it dont you think?
I'd say there is an excellent chance we see an updated model first quarter next year.
I'd be extremely suprised if we didn't.

Besides the obvious counterintuitive nature of pretty much every claim made in this "rumor", the claim is internally inconsistent, too.

The OP claims 3G data yet claims no change to the radio (circumventing FCC). First of all, the FCC has to approve pretty much every EC on an existing platform they've approved...adding 3G to the iPhone is hardly an EC, it's a whole new spin up...to think the FCC would not need to approve it is simply a fallacy.

Come on, this is just ridiculous. Perhaps we need a "Lame, Unsubstantiated, and Even Contradictory Rumors" Sub-Forum so the signal to noise ratio on the main iPhone forum isn't polluted with this trash.

I have now heard about this from 3 separate ATT stores in Los Angeles, from three different employees. They have all described, independently, a new updated Iphone to be released this year in December that will have the following changes:

1. about .75 oz lighter
2. 3G data
3. slighty- like 5 mm- thinner- same dimensions otherwise
4. Corporate email support- exchange and what not
5. 20gb storage

I mentioned that they would have to put it out with the FCC, and they said they could not have to because the radio and overall electronics are not changing, just the battery is being made slightly smaller (thinner and lighter.)

I am calling B.S. on this, its the kind of rampant obvious speculation that anyone can come up with (they will make it better, faster, lighter- no duh!) but the specifics and the independence of the rumor from multiple ATT people made me want to post it here. Has anyone else heard anything like this?

Your point is right but I think the noise is nice because it is fun to discuss all the actual noise we hear on the streets and in our homes from the iPhone hating police a.k.a. ATT employees for one example.

Hmmm, shooting from the hip here, I guess. I just read the last paragraph from the OP where he throws a bit of salt in with the claims...

To the OP: I don't mean any offense...just think the speculation has turned from "intelligent guesses" to just craziness...

Again, reread your post and took a different tone away from it on second read...no offense meant by my initial reply.

Don't be an ass. Rumors have been flying around about this, he didn't post a blatant guess regardless of whether it's true or false.

Thank you! I didn't just post some thing i heard randomly- I have heard this from 3 separate and independent sources. If it is false, then so be it- but it is not outside the realm of possibility. And as for the sour grapes comment- I am getting one very shortly- I don't care if they are refreshing it next month- its a brilliant piece of technology!

No, SJ said "AT THE TIME THEY WERE DESIGNING THE IPHONE" the 3G chipsets were too big and consumed too much power.

It was not even 2 weeks ago that Jobs mentioned this. If there was any chance G3 would work in the iPhone they would have included it in the prototype that went to the FCC. The chip is STILL to big and STILL takes up too much power.

HOLY CRAP!

I just read through this entire thread- my gosh- I am sorry I even posted here! This forum is turning in to IGN's xbox forum- "YEAH LOL NOOB STUPIS LOFL ABCDEF!"

Seriously, this is ridiculous! I posted something that three separate ATT employees have all said, in three different stores, on three different occasions, hoping to get some feedback. That's all I was doing. And as for the "It couldn't be that thin/ fast/ feature perfect/with that much battery life," people- IT'S CALLED TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS...

What I was told IS possible, it IS conceivable, and it IS reasonable that those are possible improvements on a refresh of the Iphone.

All I was wondering is if someone had hear similar rumors, that's all. I find it awfully strange that within days I hear the same thing three times. That's it.

This TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS... would be simply amazing.

Now go check out the current 3G chips in a Blackjack.
http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3036

Now add in some more Nand chips for the extra memory.

Now on top of this throw in the ban on Qualcomm.

Seeing how if the phone was to launch in December Apple would already be working on this phone. That is some MAJOR advancement with amazing restrictions all hidden from the FCC.

Also they would reduce the battery and add the more power hungry 3G chips? That would be a HUGE step in the wrong direction from everything Jobs has said up to this point.

Simply AMAZING!

Every AT&T employee can tell me this "new" phone was to launch in December with the stats you have said but till I saw something to make me believe this technology is possible. I would tell them they are full of it.

And for the record- I did tell them they were full of it- every time. I just don't understand the hostile attitude around here!

Well many of us would like the features that some are popping their heads in and promising. (Not meaning you just in general) It is frustrating day in and day out seeing "my buddy" told me threads.

I think it would be hard to find someone who wouldn't want a 20gb, 3g, thinner, lighther iPhone.

There will be an update of some sort by December because there is no way that they are launching in the UK without 3G.

Again, I think everyone here and their mothers know more information than ATT retail employees. I doubt even ATT executives have any clue what Apple will do.

I think we will see the iMac and iPod refreshed before we see the next iPhone. Of course that is me just guessing :D

Of course I'm always game for a surprise.

I am hoping for a Touchscreen iPod (entry level 40 or 60 GB) real soon, and then a 3G iPhone with GPS, a bit bigger for power and extra gear or the same size with better power management etc, early 2007.

I'll probably by both, because I really need a PDA right now, and will likely pass the iPod onto the significant other when I get my iPhone Down Under.

I suppose anything is possible (but it's not likely that anyone at ATT knows anything, other than the CEO).

Apple has developed this phone to be totally software upgradeable, (short of 3g) and I expect they will ride this device for at least a year. Maybe they'll give it a memory kick and a battery enhancement, but that's about it.

I'd expect a lower cost iPod nano style phone and refreshed iPod 1st. I think the click wheel on the more expensive iPods will be history and I also think a smaller format, less feature rich phone will sell like crazy. I don't expect Apple to kill the nano in exchange for a nano-phone. Too much market resistance to the carrier and issues about switching mid-contract. I think there will be parallel product lines.

I'm very curious to see how Apple handles the "Europe" phone issue. If a 3g phone gets released in that market it will really raise hell in the US, especially if it's near term. I think the battery life issue is critical and degradation to the current specs would be a serious negative. Introducing a more powerful and faster product overseas would be a first for Apple. I don't know anything about the cell networks overseas, but I imagine if 3g is the standard with all carriers Apple would have to adopt this to be successful.

Maybe this is how they will "cram" 3g up ATT's rear. They will either upgrade their network or Apple will have the right to open the phone to other carriers. Market pressures and all that. I suspect Apple adopted Edge only because they got what they wanted monetarily from ATT. ATT gave it's network a speed bump and at current levels, it's minimally acceptable.

Awaiting the play to begin.....

maybe by December someone will have unlocked iPhone v1.0.

"Hackers had hoped that modifying the iPhone's bootloader -- the program that runs before the operating system is loaded -- would unlock the handset. But that turned out to be a dead end, as the bootloader code must be signed using a 1,024-bit RSA private key employed by Apple..."

Iphone Stumps Hackers

For that matter, even applestore employees don't have a hint about apple's future plans.

It is quite unbelievable what ridiculous and completely absurd stuff some bozos are trying to spread around here...I guess verizon and sprint must be training a bunch of chimps to type in some FUD in iPhone forums all over, hoping to propagate some consumer hesitation.

I'd be extremely suprised if we didn't.

I expect just one major improvement/addition in the next version -probably in Q01-08 – either a doubling of memory from 8 to 16gb or a 3g upgrade but not both - the other one will have to wait for another 6 months.

1. We know the iPhone is without a doubt going to the UK. There's too much money to be made for Apple to stay out of that market.

2. If they're going to the UK they're going to have to have 3G to compete or even stay relevant.

3. So it's only a matter of time before they develop this technology and invade the rest of the world.

PLUS Apple is not waiting to do this as many of you speculate. The only reason they'd wait is if their iPhones are sitting on the shelfs and not selling at their price points. I know that there's a lot of Apple worship that goes on here, but the fact remains that this company has their highest stock price, because they've becoming incredibly corporate and greedy in their practices. Their iPhone price along with the exclusive contract with AT&T is just one recent example. They'd be smart to get a new product out there around December, and while I doubt it's an update iPhone, it'd be foolish to say that it's impossible or unlike Apple to do that to their loyal customer who lined up the first day to get one.
