Hey MacRumors folks, have a bit of a unique situation and was hoping someone might have the answer.

I'm currently on a year abroad. My iPhone 6s, which is unlocked, is still under contract with T mobile and is up in March.

My mom is visiting me in a few weeks, so we decided I'd get a new iPhone via the Upgrade Program, and then I'd have an unlocked phone for the remainder of the semester.

Yesterday, she went to the Apple Store and signed up for my phone. She gave her T-Mobile info as required, however mentioned to the representitve that the phone was for me and that I'd probably like opening it myself. The representative said it was no problem, and gave her the sealed, inactivated phone.

My question is this: Does this iPhone need to be activated with a T-Mobile SIM card because of the Upgrade Program, or now that it's out of the store it's like any other unlocked phone and any SIM card would do the trick?

It's unlocked but you'll need to move your current SIM or activate a new one with T-Mobile to use that service. You'll be able to use it with other carriers. It won't lock it.

Ok, so does it have to be T-Mobile or any carrier will do?

Any carrier. Though I think the model they gave you may not work with Sprint or Verizon I think.
