I visited an Apple Store today, I was told the reservation program allows a potential customer to reserve Sim-Free, TMob, VZW, or ATT in-store however; to use the Apple Upgrade Program you have to activate a T-Mob, VZW, or ATT in-store.I noticed that SIM-free is now one of the options on the Apple site for the upgrade program. Does this mean prepaid customers can take part, or is activation on a postpaid plan still necessary?
I got a sim free on upgrade program. The employee just activates a separate sim card with the phone. The specialist mentioned I can request a device unlock to my carrier as soon as I leave the store.

Keep in mind that other people were able to make a reservation for a SIM free phone for the Apple Upgrade program, and were unable to complete it when they got to the store. Not sure if they just got someone who didn't know the plan or what... But be prepared for a "Plan B".
