It sucks not being in USA. I know we replaced at least one phone because of how slow it became. However $35 in the grand scheme of how much a phone costs, is pretty minor.

Apple doesn't admit wrong doing, but I remember them publicly apologizing for not communicating to customers (which is like an admission).

A bit unrelated but even if one million customers decide to stop purchasing any apple products and services all of a sudden, Apple should still be fine either way. So I’m not sure how “costly” this class action lawsuit could be if Apple decides to continue.

While $25 cash is better than nothing, it also won’t do too much either personally. If I can get, great. If I manage to miss it, fine.

The bottom line is, since Apple is so big, they can pretty much do whatever they want and will manage to get away with it without any serious consequences. $500 million payout is not a “serious consequence”.

So, Apple ****s our phones and gets us to buy a replacement battery ($100) or an entirely new phone ($750) and in return, we get $25

**** off

Apple throttling devices with aging batteries to protect the user from the device shutting off is "one of the largest frauds in history"??

Apple's only mistake was not communicating this to the user or giving the user the option to run at full speed with the risk of shutting down vs. accepting the throttling. But Apple didn't implement this feature to harm consumers.

$25 is not going to make a difference in the lives of most iPhone owners. But the settlement will surely enrich the legal team that prosecuted this frivolous lawsuit.

Ironically the best solution here may have been to just not do anything helpful. It's like people who get sued for breaking a rib doing CPR. Fine, next time I just won't bother helping.

Communicating all the small changes that are made, and giving options to turn them all on or off is just unsustainable.

The problem is the number of people who don't understand anything about technology, let alone the complexity of something like an iPhone, but living in paranoid fear that Apple is out to get them. "They slowed the phone down to make me buy a new one." "They just let the phone crash randomly to make me buy a new one."

I'm still in the camp that this whole thing was only an issue in hindsight. This was a pretty effective technical solution to a problem-- if your only goal was to slow the phone down with future OS updates, that would be easy enough to do without needing anything nearly this sophisticated. Apple never promised a performance level.

I knew more than a few iPhone 5's that would crash at random with apparently full batteries. It's not easy to convince people that even though the battery still lasts all day, and appears full, there is still the problem when current surges. They either think the phone is old and needs to be replaced, or that Apple is doing something behind the scenes "because the new model is out".

For every person who bought a new phone because their 6 slowed down, I'd bet there were 3 that bought a new phone because their 5 got flakey.

But this isn’t the whole story, we also have the bad advice from Apple.

I went to an Apple reseller and they told me it was time for a new phone. They blamed things like the OS not being up to date (it was) and me charging my phone overnight. They did a test and my phone apparently had a healthy battery, even though they could see the battery percentage decreasing before their eyes. They refused to change the battery.

I got the battery replaced elsewhere and am now on my fourth 6S battery.
It sounds like the problem here was the reseller.

I suppose you could try to sue the company every time someone at a reseller claiming to represent a company says something stupid, but it doesn't seem like the best use of our legal system. Suing for stupid, countersuits that the plaintiff is stupider, suing the state for the judge's stupid comments in the courtroom...

Who is entitled to this money??? The original purchaser? The current owner? I purchased 3 eligible models directly from Apple... 6 plus, 6s plus & 7 plus. However, I have long since upgraded & sold all of the phones. I tried all three different phone models along with 3 different addresses & nothing was found in their database...

Every real Apple fan should not want this money.
to adl for it is a disgrace.
I agree!! I got the email and refuse to participate in this BS. People complain of planned obsolescence but Apple actually moved to extend the life of old devices to protect them from spikes causes when the battery naturally ages. Hopefully his money grad doesn’t change their view. The easier and more profitable move would be to let the device die or better yet leave it Vulnerable by only updating 1 or 2 year old devices.

"Apple will provide a cash payment of approximately $25 to each eligible iPhone owner who submits a claim"

Online submission took less than 2 minutes for me.

$25 for less than 2 minutes of my time is the equivalent of making approximately $750/hr.
after reading this, i decided to search up my iphone 6 plus and iphone 7 plus serial numbers from my email. tried 10 times to submit the claim but the website wouldn't match up my serial.

wasted 6-7 minutes.

Yea great, i got rid of that device years ago. Good luck finding that serial number now.
You can use the search feature and have the site find it for you.

Did you try the search feature on the site?

Darn, US only.
I had several of these, could have got $100 from them but that's US only.
Why is this US-only? Is there an EU version?

if not, we Europeans should also sue Apple. They admitted wrongdoing, and their behaviour to us was the same as to US customers.
There are no other countries than the U.S! Surprised the planets arent Mercury, Venus, U.S., Mars, etc /s
Pity it's only for US
... and what about the 96% of the planets population who don't live in the USA? Come on Apple, pull your finger out.
Probably has to do with the lawsuit being a US one, given that this is a settlement related to said lawsuit.

I am the owner of an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus device that ran iOS 11.2 or later prior to December 21, 2017.

Do people really remember the version of iOS they had on which date? I had some variant of iOS 11 on my iPhone 7 in 2017 but do I really remember if it was 11.2 or later?

Class action lawsuits....gotta love 'em! Lawyers get paid millions while the class that demanded said reprimand, has to settle for mere dollars or cents.

What a system!

Well, the "class" gets millions too, it's just that those millions have to split among the individual members that are part of it.

Damn, I had a couple of these devices. I wonder if I can apply for multiple payouts? Also, lol at some people on here defending Apple.

”an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus that ran iOS 11.2 or later, before December 21, 2017”

So the window is pretty small for iPhone 7/7+ owners to get in on this:

iOS 11.2 was released on December 2, 2017
iOS 11.2.1 was released on December 13, 2017

Those were the only iOS 11.2.x releases before December 21, 2017. If you didn’t have one of those versions installed before then, you’re not eligible for this. That must be why it’s rejecting my information on the claim form. It’s highly unlikely I would have updated to iOS 11.2 in that short timeframe.

"Hey, you know that thing were you had a choice between letting my phone crash, or throttling CPU spikes so that it wouldn't crash and would keep running? And you chose the option the kept my phone running instead of the option where my phone crashed? Can I get $25 for you keeping my phone running? Thanks!"
