They didn't say no to the phone itself, because it didn't exist when Verizon was first approached. Heck, it wasn't until six months later that Apple even began an OSX port to the ARM processor. (The only "Apple" related phone Verizon knew about was the ROKR. Not exactly a glowing example.)

Verizon said no to the idea that Apple wanted them to sell an iPod phone with no subsidies, no warranty oversight by Verizon, and no sales through Verizon partners such as Best Buy.

We can also guess that Verizon would've wanted a chance at music and ringtone sales. They almost certainly would've also wanted GPS and 3G in the first model (as almost all their other phones had).

Taken all together, Apple's blind proposal must've sounded pretty lame, especially since Apple also wanted monthly extras. You'd have to be a desperate carrier to agree to all that.

Look from my understanding the iPhone will always stay with At&T. If you don't like AT&T the switch. If you can't live without an iPhone then switch and get an iPod Touch and stop complaining. From my knowledge on the iPhone. Steve Jobs went to Verizon with the iPhone and the CEO would not give him the time of day. I have also heard that Verizon didn't like the app store because they didn't get any of the profit when users bought an app. I remember reading that AT&T was the last company that Steve went to. I have also read that AT&T is buying cell towers from Verizon.

There will always be talk about iPhone moving to Verizon, but I don't see it happening. Verizion had there chance to get the iPhone and they didn't take it so why would apple go back to me. Money wouldn't bring them to Verizon because Apple doesn't need.

:apple:(2)iPhone 3G 16GB
:apple:iMac
:apple:Macbook Pro
:apple:Apple TV
And everything else that apple makes like all the ipods up-to-date :)

I don't think there's any doubt that the iPhone will eventually come to Verizon, it really is just a matter of time. Apple exists to make money and there's no doubt that moving to the largest carrier in the USA would do anything but that. Whether they sell a phone on Verizon or AT&T shouldn't make a difference to Apple, it's a win/win for them. Let the carriers duel it out.

Does anyone truly believe that just because Verizon couldn't work out an agreement (and who knows what the sticking points were, it's all hearsay)with Apple in the beginning, that they're just going to shun them now out of spite? That's pretty ridiculous.

That's business. Honestly, are you going to let someone sell something you make after they said no because it's not how thye want? Out of ego you are going to say nah and stick to that one person who beleived in your product and went forward.

Exactly. Business is business.

Note that some sticking points are public knowledge, not hearsay.

It's ironic that one of the major problems was Apple not wanting to sell through Best Buy or Walmart. Not a problem any more.

The rediculous rumors passed on as fact are amazing.

First of all, anyone with a Verizon smart phone will tell you that Verizon doesn't change the software or put restrictions, that image I believe is from their dumbphone market. The two blackberries I have had have IDENTICAL software to their AT/T and TMobile brothers. They do have an added Verizon Vcast section, etc.. but I dont use that stuff and stick to the standard software and its dead on identical.

As for GPS, again both my blackberries have GPS working FREE OF CHARGE. Verizon charges you if you want to use their custom GPS application, but if you install google maps or your own GPS software, then it works just fine, there is no restriction.

So if you make a post badmouthing verizon because of 'lack of gps' or 'resitricted software' I think you destroy all your credibility because every verizon owner knows you are just full of crap, making stuff up :).

As for iPhone coming to Verizon, I dont think it will ever happen, because of corporate classes and differences in fundamental bussiness ethos. Apple is more interested in the user experience and a sound product, whereas verizon is more interested in high profit and major cost cutting. That combined with the fact that both companies are financially doing VERY well basicly negates the chance that they would need to work with each other. I can safely say no iPhone will come to Verizon till atleast LTE becomes the defacto standard across the USA or another 10 years minimum

wow, a dead thread....instead of me making a separate Verizon rumor posting here.....my neighbor works for Verizon, and she is preparing training/launch material for Verizon staff on their upcoming iPhone launch in October 2010.

Really?

Internal only? Thought we weren't going to see it until 2011oooohhhh, that's why AT&T let everyone whose contract expired in 2010 to upgrade right now. Crafty devils.

If this is true, when can we expect an official announcement?

I want so bad to believe this but it always ends up not being true. I need a new phone bad, but if iPhone will be on Verizon or at least announced for Verizon by October (when my contract ends) I will wait even though I'm eligible for an upgrade now.

Your friend does not work for Verizon.

You know nobody from Verizon.

You bump an age old thread with this nonsense.

On a serious note, I doubt Apple would release a phone in July and have one planned for October, and NOT mention it at the keynote.

While I think the earliest we'll see a Verizon iPhone is summer 2012, Apple would most certainly NOT mention far-off future iPhones at the keynote, due to the Osbourne effect and possible lawsuits from AT&T. If a Verizon iPhone was scheduled for October, they'd be insane to mention it at the keynote (~6 months out).

Well, they sure as hell wouldn't mention it if they DID have plans!

So you think they would have mentioned a Verizon iPhone coming in the Fall and take away millions of sales this Summer for themselves and AT&T in the meantime?! There will be NO mention of a Verizon iPhone until the initial wave of sales dies down later this Summer and until the bulk of those people are past their 30-day return policy. Apple would be shooting themselves and AT&T in the foot if they did otherwise. This is common sense.

I take it you haven't studied marketing much.

I just wish either Apple or Verizon would come out and officially say "Yes iPhone will be coming to Verizon within _______, or no plans for iPhone on Verizon in foreseeable future.

This would make my decision easier and i would upgrade to another phone now and hope that maybe in 2 more years it would come, or the complete opposite and let me know that if i wait that although not tomorrow it wont be TOO far off.

In all honesty the only reason i want an iPhone is because my banking program is mac only and they have an iPhone app coming out that want to get, and also because of its compatibility with all the docks and car accessories out there. These are the only two real advantages i see over an Android phone which is why this madness irritates me and i wish either Verizon or Apple would step up to the plate and just say what the F is going on.

they have multiable times. tho people cant accept it.

I mean respond to this latest rumor. And the latest thing i remember hearing was before WWDC when Steve Jobs said "You know i can't talk about that" when asked about other carriers, and then Verizon said we wouldn't see iPhone on the network in the "immediate" future when talking about the DroidX.

Immediate future is a lot different from foreseeable future.
