NYC: Both seem to work fine until you get upstate, in which case Verizon dominates.

As a resident of Upstate NY, I've got to disagree. Both AT&T and Verizon get excellent service in the area, with one coming out slightly ahead depending on the town.

In my own, AT&T's service trumps Verizon hands down. Hence, I'm switching to AT&T upon announcement of the new iPhone.

Besides my rant about Verizon, Apple and ATT have a 5-year exclusive contract so the earliest would be 2011-2012.

There are several messages re the 5-year exclusive contract. It is not an absolute impediment to a Verizon iphone. It simply means that the contract would have to be renegotiated and Verizon would probably have to bring a decent amount of money to the table.

I guess it depends on where you live. My experience is largely on the Northway, where I simply couldn't make a call on AT&T for much of it, could once I switched to Verizon.

This assumes that it is indeed a 5-year deal. I'd still guess that it's shorter than that, but at least another year or two.

Even so, I doubt Verizon will get it any time soon. Their COO Ivan Seidenberg is a blustery idiot and reveals his hubris every time he speaks...

The fact is that AT&Ts service is iffy in the Boulder, CO area where I spend the most time, but I might just switch anyway for an iPhone. Verizon's network is great, but everything else about them stinks on ice.

Losing hope eh? I am too, as a matter of fact. Partly because of Ivan's blusterings, and partly because of all the news I'm reading about the upcoming Blackberry Thunder. It's a Verizon/Vodaphone exclusive, and from the bits I'm hearing it will be the biggest contender to the iPhone yet in terms of user experience. Actually, I want one pretty bad, maybe even more than the iPhone if it turns out as good as it sounds. Verizon doesn't usually sign up for and announce long term exclusives, but they did for the Thunder, which makes it seem like they are tightly focused on competing with the iPhone rather than selling it.

Will be interesting to see what happens!

How is Blackberry's software when it comes to interacting with the Mac? My experience with Palm has been so bad that I hadn't really considered Blackberry, as unfair as that may be.

Yeah, I've pretty much given up hope for a Verizon iPhone, at least for the next couple of years. The fact that I'm even considering switching to a network which is less reliable in my area speaks volumes about how much I want a damn iPhone! But I agree with your assessment - seems like Verizon is taking up a posture of competition rather than collaboration. Their loss, literally if I switch.

Not sure about the Mac - I suggest checking Crackberry.com for discussion on that. I would think it works fine on a Mac.

I have a really good impression of Blackberries, even though I've never owned one (I fully expect to very soon). In fact I've had Apple stock for a while now, and just picked up some RIM to cover the two top players in this market. I think both have very good products and are advancing at a fast rate, and this competition will be great for consumers. RIM is taking the iPhone very seriously, and their upcoming Bold and Thunder look like major steps forward for RIM, and they are potentially "iPhone Killers", at least for some customers. Can't wait to see some reviews of the final products.

AT&T aside, I'm really torn on the iPhone. On the one hand I really admire its UI, and being an iPod/iTunes user, I really want an iPhone. But on the other hand, I'm an advanced smartphone user and want all the bells and whistles. Apple insists on "dumbing down" certain features that I use and I don't see them letting go on that anytime soon. Blackberry includes all the features and options and somehow manages to keep it easy to navigate. The Bold and Thunder should improve on that even more. Being a power user, I might have to go with a Blackberry even if the iPhone ends up on Verizon. But I'd like to have the choice. I'd also like Apple on Verizon just so I can see my Apple stock skyrocket. :)

I'm bored while waiting for the 2.0 update so I thought I'd throw in my two cents. :)

I've been on almost every US cell provider and well... they all have their down sides so you really just have to choose the lesser of the evils and this can be different in all areas. In my area... Verizon wins hands down regardless of their phone selection. But you know what? I hate talking on the phone anyway! haha So my solution... stick with Verizon (I get an 18% educator's discount!), get the LG VX9700 (Dare), and get an iPod Touch.

So... while I'm talking to someone on the phone (speakerphone), I can check my email, watch videos, browse the internet, play solitaire or monkey ball here in a bit!, etc. without pausing or ending my call (to someone I probably don't want to talk to in the first place). While I do see the iPhone as a very cool little device with a lot of potential... I feel there's a point at which we need to stop trying to pack everything into a single device.

...just put it all on a few microchips and implant them in my head so I can do everything while I sleep. :p (sorry, I forgot to charge my brain last night so my alarm didn't go off) haha

iphone on verizon!

You sure got my vote! I wish there was a survey showing how much money Apple is loosing because of people that are loyal to Verizon that want a iphone.

Very little, seeing as they're catering to 6.7 billion people with GSM networks and only 300 million with CDMA.

Also, this thread is half a year old. That should tell you how little people care.

Numbers are meaningless unless you put some actual thought into what they are about. A lot of those people can't afford dinner, much less a smartphone with a data plan.

CDMA covers just as many people around the world on 3G as GSM users do.

Third worlders are not buying the iPhone. Half the sales are in the USA, and Apple could double those by putting out the phone they wanted to originally: a CDMA version for Verizon.

I doubt Verizon will ever carry the iPhone because Verizon uses CDMA, but Apple went with the worldwide standard, GSM.

Who says they can't make the iPhone to work on CDMA? They did it with other phones.

EDIT: I didnt realize this was 13 pages long, so if someone already said this, I am sorry.

There arnt even 7 billion people on the planet.

iPhone on Verizon?

Ok so since AT&Ts contract expires (I thought next year but maybe later idk) Ive been very curious how Apple will implement there revolutionary phone on CDMA2000 networks. Before I even add inwhat I'm going to say let's not get into a whos better verizon or AT&T because I don't care and they both have amazing qualitys. So I'm curious what the name will be maybe iPhone evolution relating to the evolution data optimized (EVDO) networks they will be implemented on but what I'm even more curious about is how verizon is going to jump on this idea and if they do how will they handle not being able to throw there meh firmwre on it. I personally think if AT&T's network can handle the iphone then verizons more mature network can handle it. Discuss.

The blackberry storm, will be knocked off the shelf. :D if the iphone is in verizon

Gives people more choices on blackberry vs iphone

i wonder if the iphone might be competing more with the release of BB storm 2 later this year or the next.....

(note this is a picture of a blackberry storm 2, -see the bottom, looks like the top of the blackberry curve 8530- idk if this pic is real?)

They won't. No need to wonder.

How can you be so sure? I mean it's pretty biased given your location...here in the north America we have both GSM and CDMA which is a huge market equaly [CDMA]. Also every seams hell bent that verizon is total suckage when AT&T isn't nearly mature....

I'm from the U.S., and I don't believe Apple will make a CDMA iPhone. They've chosen their pony, and they're going to ride it to the bitter end.

Oh, it's coming. As soon as Apple start using Qualcomm's chips, a Verizon CDMA iPhone will be in the making.

ATT is fine. Big red sucks. The end. CDMA is stupid because only the U.S uses it and it is dieing technology. Im sick of these dam threads.

AT&T sucks. I have dropped calls every single day since going to AT&T and can't ever remember dropping a call when I had Verizon or even Sprint for that matter.

Then switch back to them. No one told you to go to att. All networks have there weak spots live with it.
