Yeah I did. It's actually pretty easy, and no way you can damage the plastic, you just need to use electrical tape to cover it all nicely. It leaves no residue at all.

Here are some pics; Sorry about the quality, but I just can't find my darned Memory Card reader, so I took them with my MacBook's iSight.

Why I am wearing gloves to handle my iPhone?

...I have no idea.

By the way, I used really fine sandpaper that I found laying around. I don't know the grit size, but it did a darn good job!

A friend of mine brings up a good point regarding the chrome. I worry that there will be issues of corrosion and rust after doing a mod like this.

It all depends on what type of metal is present underneath the chrome. Apparently, chrome doesn't "really" rust, however the metal underneath, if exposed to air, can rust.

Though I have to say that it does indeed look awesome.

EDIT: Unwilling to take the plunge on this mod yet, I'd just like to say that chrome polish can "help" with scratches. I will say though that after quite a few polishing rounds, it certainly takes a few passes with the ol' Brasso compound to have any effect.

you know it's just a "chrome-look" piece of plastic trim don't you?

Brasso won't do a whole lot for that! - i would be concerned about rubbing the chrome-look off and revealing the dark grey plastic underneath - but a previous poster has worked pretty hard on his and not removed that yet.

I dropped mine a couple of months back on tarmac and it chipped a bit into the corner - was gutted at the time!- but it clearly shows that the part is plastic!

Nice! If you find your memory card reader, please post up some more pics!

are you serious??

It's plastic - "chrome-look" plastic - it's not going to rust - ever!

After jumping from the first few pages, seeing the pics of the brushed look, I can't help but think this is like a DeLorean edition iPhone.

do it

if there's anyone out there that's hesitant to do this, seriously just do it. there's hardly any room for error, and it's so simple to set up.

well worth the 20 minutes.

is there any chance of you sanding down too much and reaching the plastic? :( this coming from the artist who spray-painted the covers of his scratched blue razr , ha:D

Yes, there is, but you'd have to sand quite a bit for that to happen. You basically just need to lightly scuff the surface to get the brushed aluminum effect.

I would do a very fine grit - like 700 or so. I believe it would turn out more elegantly. 220 seems very coarse for a task like this.

i can live with the small scratches i have now, but if it gets any worse i'm definitely doing this - the brushed look is awesome

To do mine, I used a really fine sandpaper, it even feels soft to the touch, and made my iPhone look great. From what I see, I don't think you're gonna reach the plastic part in quite a long while.

Here are some more pics, I retouched it since, specially the corners, so now it looks a bit better, but I don't have pics :p

Looks so much better than chrome! Apple should have made them like this from the start! :)
