I did this mod a few days ago to my white 3g. I think it looks great and so has everyone else who has seen it. Definitely an improvement over the chrome. Let me know what you guys think...

I want to do this to my 3G, but I tried it out on an old iPod Nano.. and let's just say I'm having second thoughts. :p

One last question, would you be able to do this with steal wool??

Just use a scotchbrite pad man. I guess a very fine steel wool would work too, but I'd still rather use the scotchbrite green one... something about steel and my iPhone frightens me.

The larger the area, the tougher the time I'm sure you will have making it look even. You probably have to be very careful to go straight back and forth to keep the "grains" uniform.

Aw man. I would have done this, but I already had the invisible shield installed, and it covers the bezel. The worst part is that I got it used, so the bezel is scratched to no end. Argh. Oh well. If I ever have to remove it, I know what I'm going to do before it's reinstalled! ;)

Yeah with the iPods where the entire back is chrome you have to use a guide when brushing or it will look horrible because the strokes will not be even.

just done my iphone 3g and it looks so much better! I didn't use tape though it still looks good.

A friend of mine brings up a good point regarding the chrome. I worry that there will be issues of corrosion and rust after doing a mod like this.

It all depends on what type of metal is present underneath the chrome. Apparently, chrome doesn't "really" rust, however the metal underneath, if exposed to air, can rust.

Though I have to say that it does indeed look awesome.

EDIT: Unwilling to take the plunge on this mod yet, I'd just like to say that chrome polish can "help" with scratches. I will say though that after quite a few polishing rounds, it certainly takes a few passes with the ol' Brasso compound to have any effect.

Many people did this mod to the first gen iphone a year ago and are still rust free. ;)

has anyone done this with the 3g I brushed the plastic trim by accident but it looks cool.

Man, thats looks really good. I am way too nervous to try it on mine though, I feel like I'd manage to screw something up.

I wish I had the courage.

The pictures above are of a white 3g... And you did the plastic trim? Didn't you tape it off? And since it looks "cool" did you go ahead and do the whole backing??? I can't imagine how that looks...

I thought eff it and just did it to my 1st gen iphone... I have to say that the end result makes it better looking .....

Kudos for doing this on a brand new phone. And it looks damn good too.

Good job, man.

I did it to my first gen Iphone too and I really helped breathe new life into an old scratched up Iphone. It looked alot better than a scratched bezel. I'll probably do it to my 3g as well once I get a few scratches in it.

Has anyone who has done this on a 3G tried brushing the buttons as well? Is it hard not to scratch the plastic in the process? Pics would be apreciated.
