Has the Galaxy line really gotten that bad?

Almost outselling iPhone 2 quarters after S8 release during a quarter when APple released two new models? Yeah, Samsung is doomed. If the trend continues Samsung is going to outsell Apple in each and every month.

Your stupidity aside, Samsung does face some challenges especially in China where the local brands are surging.

Big win for Apple. The X was a huge hit and easily worth the money. In the premium market, $200 is nothing.
Thanks to this "hit" we got a mini market crash today.

Did you even bother to read what I quoted? The joke clearly went over your head.

A lot more factors in play than any disappointment in AAPL. GOOGL reported a bad quarter and had a huge charge, something Apple didn't have to take.

Again, you can point to the stock and I can't argue with you because it IS down, but the quarter was absolutely a success. Anyone really looking at the numbers will say they had good growth across all segments, particularly in revenue. A 13% y/y growth on both the top and bottom line and normalized for 14 week quarter, 82-83M iPhones sold at $800 each. Raising the ASP by $100 is the story. 1.3B active devices absolutely superpowering services revenue. And a 38% increase y/y in the wearables/Other category which is Watch, Airpods etc. 30M subscriber increase in one quarter to 240M paying subscribers.

You're forgetting the 74M Samsung phones sold are not even close to all Galaxy phones. We don't know exactly, but A LOT of their phones are low margin <$200 phones. Apple makes similar margins are all phones, which is why they just pulled a $20B in PROFIT quarter. LOL...do you realize how insane that is? It was 13% more than last year.

Yeah, Apple is doomed because the market was down almost 700 points today and traders and shortsellers are in control. Value always wins. Long term investors have seen many panic days. This goes for all stocks. I'm sure no one at AAPL or GOOGL is panicking.

Dude, he was joking about a typo in the article. You should take the time to read his post and what he quoted in bold before you insult him.

This kind of behavior really isn't surprising, though. His post is the epitome of MacRumors discussion threads: wherein 90% of people fail to read the article/comments they're responding to, and then go on to post something dumb and uninformed.

He also seems to think the only phones Samsung sells are Galaxies. iPhone is far and away the top selling "premium" smartphone. Apple doesn't sell low margin junk like Samsung. Even with all the junk, Samsung still didn't ship as many phones.

Another reason Apple is so amazing.

This is true. The S8/S8+/Note 8 flagship combo doesn't outsell Apple's flagship iPhones combined (7/7+ earlier in 2017, and 8/8+/X later), not by a long shot.

Just imagine this place when the X Plus, speced out, is close to $1500. Got the popcorn ready for that!

Only if they could have built them and there were plenty of reports of supply constraints.

Yes, but Apple's 4th quarter was one week shorter than prior quarters. Samsung's probably was not. Also, Apple's ASP is over three times that of Samsung so the majority of Samsung's sales in both this quarter and in the year overall were low-price "feature phones" sold in markets Apple does not compete in.

So when Samsung announces strong sales in the quarter they launch the new Galaxy, we should be sure to note that it is "stupid reporting" because it was not the quarter Apple launched the new iPhone. :p

The drop is not about the sales, its all about the outlook. Reduced guidance is what is hurting the stock. Unless apple lowers price of X, sales will continue to stagnate. The average person will not buy a phone at $1000. Introducing a lcd model instead of Oled will reduce costs massively, but that probably won't happen until iphone XI. Also the costs for Face ID should drop as well. So short term, Apple will struggle and likely touch $150. But the future is bright, if it hits $150 and below, start averaging in.

Samsung Galaxy S and Note sales are a fraction of iPhone sales. Since the beginning of time.

Aside from the article mistake, As an Avid Apple iPhone Follower/enthusiast, I have to say that the S8 and Note 8 are really nice devices. I personally like their hardware, but it's android that's holding me back that I don't find appealing at all.

I think the S8 has really nice hardware, but the UX is horrendous. I don't understand how anyone can use the fingerprint scanner on that thing. I have to reposition my hand every time and risk dropping the phone to scan my fingerprint. It's 100x worse than the iPhone's notch.

My bad.

And lately the newest iPhones are not the best sellers either. Apple just restarted sales on iPhone 6 in India.

I’m sorry, you are on the wrong website to complain about Samsung products. This is an Apple forum, you are only allowed to badmouth Apple products here. And Tim Cook.

Confession: I’m guilty of trashing Apple on occasion myself.

What are you people talking about that the X is too expensive??? It's the state of the art high end phone. The pixel2 and the S8 are like $850. So $150 more and it's IOS. And have you ever had a problem with the Google or Samsung phone good luck.

And if you want a cheaper iPhone the 6s for $449 is still an excellent IOS phone. What other maker gives you that much selection at price points from $349 on up.

It's not even close. I've seen some unconfirmed reports of numbers like 10-20M Galaxy phones in a quarter. A LOT of Samsung phones are sold in emerging markets for $100 or less.

He gets it. $200 is nothing in this market, particularly when it's displayed as $8/month more for 24 months.

Plus, a phone is literally the most important device in peoples' lives next to a car and for many (think under 16) it's THE most important thing.

Just think how much higher the numbers would have been if they left in the headphone jack!
This is a premium model, if you don't understand.
There are budget models as well, and even with the 3.5 mm jack for that matter.

Not true. Samsung sold more in the whole year. You can't compare a quarter where apple has a new phone out and samsug does not. Same thing applies to the quarter when Samsung has a new phone out, apple hasn't. So the best to look at is the full year for a better comparison.

I also think it best to look at actual profit, who cares what market share is if you don't make any profit. I believe Apple is blowing Samsung out of the water.

I think the only ones who care are Android users.

And even they no longer seem to care. There was a mis-report that the Galaxy 8 series would drop the headphone jack and nobody batted an eye. I also believe some current and upcoming premium Android phones also dropped the headphone jack - there was nothing like the outrage when Apple did it.

What does the 8 or X do that the $450 phone can't do? The 6s will have Touch ID for Apple Pay and logging onto secure apps, it has a camera, it can take video, texting, FaceTime ....

Unless you play games or edit a lot of photos/videos or use Garageband then most of the processing speed goes to waste. You aren't using it.

You want me to spend $800+ dollars? Give me something I can't get elsewhere. And not things like Face ID or Force Touch because there are ways to do all of those functions on older and cheaper phones. You want a premium price? Give me a can't get it elsewhere in any form reason.

And this applies to everyones top of the line phone. Samsung, Google, whoever.

Why not just get the $450 phone if that meets your needs?

Because I currently have a 6+ and it meets my needs. If all anybody has is relatively small incremental improvements over 4 or 5 year old technology then I don't see a need to buy a new phone. They are the ones who want to sell product. Figure out something I can't say no to. To be honest, I want them to. But phones for the last few years have flattened out in the wow or gotta have it factor. And please don't restart the thin phone war.

As someone who purchased basically every high end android from the g1 and every iPhone since 2007

Fall 2015 iPhone 6S/spring 2016 Samsung Galaxy S7 were my “peak” smartphone buying habits.

It’s just gotten to the point even techies like me feel no need to buy high end phones every year.

So I’ve decided to just buy phones every 2 years. (Got iPhone 8 Plus 64gb $800 Plus $300 sams club gift card promo). So I’m bargain hunting. Won’t pay full price for phones anymore.

I’m sure the average cell phone is buying phones every 3 maybe even stretching it to every 4 years. So many people are still holding onto their 2014 iPhone 6 devices

So the data doesn’t surprise me.
