While the iPhone X and iPhone XS have identical overall dimensions, a new report suggests that iPhone X cases may have a slightly imperfect fit on the iPhone XS due to very slight changes to the camera bump dimensions.

iPhone X in Apple's new iPhone XS Leather Case

No, the camera bump is not any thicker, as Daring Fireball's John Gruber confirmed in his iPhones XS review on Wednesday. However, eagle-eyed Japanese blog Mac Otakara has discovered that the camera bump is ever so slightly longer and wider on the iPhone XS than the one on the iPhone X.

Head over to the translated report for specific numbers, but the gist is that the iPhone XS camera bump is up to a millimeter or two longer and wider than the one on the iPhone X, potentially affecting case compatibility.

We expect that most iPhone X cases will more or less fit the iPhone XS without issue, but Mac Otakara provided a photo of an iPhone X in Apple's new iPhone XS Leather Case, and you can see that it isn't quite a perfect fit. The camera bump should be flush with the opening in the case, and it's off just a bit.

In other words, the camera cutout on the iPhone XS Leather Case is a bit larger, to accomodate for the new iPhone XS camera bump dimensions. In reverse, the camera cutout on an iPhone X case may be a bit too small for the iPhone XS.

All in all, treat this as a warning that some iPhone X cases, especially ones with a very tight fit around the camera bump, might have an imperfect fit on the iPhone XS. It's not really a big deal, but something to keep in mind.

I planned to buy an "old" iPhone X case but I'll get one specifically for the Xs to be on the safe side

I get the idea of "just get a new case for your new phone!" I'm going from a 7 to an XS, so I have to anyway. But all the cases I'm seeing for the XS? If you look at the models, they were actually designed for the X. I'm not talking about blinged out cases that you can get at a mall kiosk, but Otterbox and Spigen. So "getting another case" is probably going to result in an ill fitting case.

Incidentally, I’ve never gotten the big deal about the iPhone back colours when I’m too scared to use the device without a case anyway. Do you guys use clear cases or something?

It at least made some sense when there was a front to the display—I’m posting this from a white-front 7 Plus—but with that gone, is there any point to the colours for us case users?

What's the point of Apple making the phones thin, lightweight, and colorful if you're going to put a bulky case on it?

Indeed. But I don't think you'll be happy when you accidentally drop it and get it all cracked or scratched up. It kinda loses its beautifulness.

At least, Apple's cases look very good with beautiful colors.

So when it went from iPhone 7 to iPhone 8, they had the same design, same RAM, same camera, and fit cases the same, but required a full "7 to 8" rename.

But when it goes from the X to XS, it gets 33% more RAM, different antenna line/grill layout, larger & better camera, and use different designed cases, it only got a minor "X to XS" rename.

Some people use the iPhone without a case. I don't know how many of them, almost every iPhone I see during my commute is on a case so I bet the vast majority of users feel safe with a case, but I can see why they offer a variety of colors.
I used to carry my iPhone 5 "naked" but stopped with iPhone 6, it felt too slippery and the following models were no better.

Interestingly enough, my bootleg (albeit a pretty good bootleg) silicone case has that exact same offset gap around the camera bump as depicted in the OP. I bought it approximately 2 weeks ago.

My real X silicone case fits perfectly (meaning no gap).
