This is a problem, especially considering this is Apple. They also yanked the X cases from sale, meaning if I don’t upgrade from X to Xs, and need a new case before iPhone XI or whatever comes out, I’ll have to buy one from eBay now while I still know it’s an iPhone X case for sure. What a mess. Very un-Apple like.

Im starting to get very irritated with apple, as I went on and got a new xs case either way.

I’m not too concerned about a small millimeter gap, but I just picked up a used iPhone X Apple leather case on eBay for a steal so hoping it won’t be too bad of a fit. I also have a leather wallet case from Apple that I was using previously with my iPhone X so I’m bummed to hear that its not compatible with iPhone Xs.

There are plenty of iPhone X cases listed for sale at Apple.com - they're just not Apple-branded (Tech21, OtterBox, Twelve South, etc.).

Talk about a small-fraction-of-the-First-World issue. For now, re-use of an iPhone X case is only a problem for someone who upgrades after one year (as time goes by, that changes, of course).

For silicon cases, I can see the case for re-use. They can certainly last a long time and still look good. However, I use the Apple leather case.s Now, I love the look of distressed leather, and it doesn't take long for my leather cases to get that glorious patina. However, by the time I'm ready to trade my iPhone X for a new model, that case will have gone from "glorious patina" to "shabby and worn-out."

Cases, as far as I'm concerned, are intended to be disposable from the start. The case takes the wear and tear so the phone within does not. New phone = new case. If it helps me avoid a single repair or AppleCare damage claim, it has more than paid for itself. Case closed. ;)

While the iPhone X and iPhone XS have identical overall dimensions, a new report suggests that iPhone X cases may have a slightly imperfect fit on the iPhone XS due to very slight changes to the camera bump dimensions.

iPhone X in Apple's new iPhone XS Leather Case

No, the camera bump is not any thicker, as Daring Fireball's John Gruber confirmed in his iPhones XS review on Wednesday. However, eagle-eyed Japanese blog Mac Otakara has discovered that the camera bump is ever so slightly longer and wider on the iPhone XS than the one on the iPhone X.

Head over to the translated report for specific numbers, but the gist is that the iPhone XS camera bump is up to a millimeter or two longer and wider than the one on the iPhone X, potentially affecting case compatibility.

We expect that most iPhone X cases will more or less fit the iPhone XS without issue, but Mac Otakara provided a photo of an iPhone X in Apple's new iPhone XS Leather Case, and you can see that it isn't quite a perfect fit. The camera bump should be flush with the opening in the case, and it's off just a bit.

In other words, the camera cutout on the iPhone XS Leather Case is a bit larger, to accomodate for the new iPhone XS camera bump dimensions. In reverse, the camera cutout on an iPhone X case may be a bit too small for the iPhone XS.

All in all, treat this as a warning that some iPhone X cases, especially ones with a very tight fit around the camera bump, might have an imperfect fit on the iPhone XS. It's not really a big deal, but something to keep in mind.

I have an iPhone X (black) and iPhone X (midnight blue case). I thought it fit around the bump perfectly, but now upon very close expection I see there is a minor gap to right and bottom of the bump like in the photo. In the photo the gap looks a little larger but I think that could be because it's so zoomed in and because the case is a different color. So as someone else noticed sounds like they may have not changed the case sizes and rather there is just some slight variations between cases so hopefully should fit fine but guess we will find out for sure Friday.

There are often slight variances in Apple cases anyway. I have yet to own an Apple branded case where the camera opening is exactly centered.

This may be less of an issue than the early reports are making it sound.

Then you buy an iPhone Xs case, Per the article the dimensions are slightly larger on the new phones, meaning you will likely only have to deal with a slightly oversized camera opening.

What's the point of Apple making the phones thin, lightweight, and colorful if you're going to put a bulky case on it?
Yeah what's the point of putting a case on a €1000,- iPhone to prevent its screen from smashing to bits when you accidentally drop it?

I take my chances without cases. Never smashed any iPhone ‘to bits’. I prefer handling the iPhone exactly as it is out of the box. Plus, I don’t prefer the added bulk in my pocket with a case added on.

I have the same spacing on my iPhone X with my two iPhone X leather cases? don't see no difference.

I feel like I lot of people are getting things mixed up here.

If you ordered a case SPECIFIC to the X and then try to use it on the XS, it may be TOO SMALL for the camera bump.

If you order a case SPECIFIC to the XS and then try to use it on the X, it will be OVERSIZED for the camera bump (gap - see image associated with the article).

Apple have just announced new iPhones and Watches and updated all their iOS based operating systems so it’s no surprise the news is dominated by those events.

I’d like to you provide some evidence to support your claims that Apple has any influence over our editorial staff because it’s news to me.

I bought a new iPhone XS case for my X because I wanted a new color... so this is kind of a bummer.

Pretty confident that if Apple had any influence over MR's editorial staff, "accomodate" [wrong] would have been spelled the right way :)

iPhone X + Genuine Brown Leather Case both bought last January have the same gap around the lower portion of the camera. This isn't a new development nor is it worth freaking out over.

Nah, it‘s a good point.

The old leather case (Spring Yellow, not sure about the cases before) for my original X already has that gap on the original X and therefore might fit the XS perfectly.

And the new covers might fit the old phone as bad or well as they did before when no-one noticed that small gap.
