Certain cafes support wireless charging, so I see it as super convenient. What is a gimmicky is the Animoji and Touch bar.

Many cafes (as well as airports, bars etc) support wired charging; I don't see your point?

Why don’t any of these charts show the time for a full 100% charge?

Because the phones trickle charge past 85% regardless of what charger they are on. So the gain from using a rapid charger is when charging under 85%.

Is this the kind of crap people actually worry about? saving a few minutes on charging your phone? wow.... just wow.

Of course great article... lots of hard work went into it it seems.

I think it is just showing that paying $70+ for Apple's "rapid charging" when a $12 Anker charger will do nearly the same thing just as fast, is completely ridiculous.

Interesting article. Sorry if repetitive, I was also interested in comparing these rates to charging an iPhone X via the USB-C port on a MacBook (Pro) using an Apple branded USB-C to Lightening cable. If the info I found is correct, you can expect to get 10W (5.2V X 2.1A) that way.

Can anyone confirm if the RavPower wireless charger has been given the 7.5w bump?

Found these numbers on a tweet from 11/19 tested on iPhone X iOS 11.1.2
30 Min. 17%
60 Min. 32%
90 Min. 48%
120 Min. 63%
180 Min. 89%
223 Min. 100%

My own testing on iPhone X iOS 11.2
1:55 Power On
30 min: 21%
60 min: 30%
90 min: 45%
120 min: 62%

No apparent 7.5w bump

Have to wonder if all conditions were equal... because the numbers you give aren't just a lack of a bump... it's actually a decrease, taking longer. And that can't possibly be the case...

Depends on your needs.

If I am charging my phone overnight while I sleep, the charging speed isn't really important so long as it's at 100% by the time I wake up. Wireless charging might be worth the slight convenience of not needing to plug and unplug your device.

But if I am going out and my phone is low on battery, every little extra bit of juice that can be squeezed into my phone during that half to one hour of charging always helps.

Agreed. I got a free 5w wireless charger from a coworker --- I use that most of the time (at work/overnight). If I need a quick charge I use my 60w 6 port Anker charger or my Anker battery brick - almost as fast as the USB C charging.

The Model: RP-PC034 Ravpower. changer does indeed support 7.5 W charging. I picked one up via Amazon and it’s a good product overall (so far). I’ve had it a few weeks. Once Apple enabled the 7.5 W capability it began fast charging.

Anyone else think when wireless charging first came out that they were talking about truly wireless charging? Not this pad crap?
.

I considered wireless charging pretty much a gimmick until I tried it. Is it necessary? Hell no, but I have to admit it’s handy.

The last sentence of this piece.

"...but it's convenient to be able to set your iPhone right next to you on a wireless charger and pick it up when necessary without the need to hassle with a cord."

Hassle? Really? Come on, now.

In the middle of the night in a dark bedroom it is a hassle being tethered to a lightning cable compared to wireless.

Can’t be good to fast charge the battery all the time. You can feel the battery generating more heat rather than storing so it get less efficient with more wattage

So plugging it in and out is convenient when you’re out?

Btw, did my post mention anything about cafe etc not supporting wired charging? You like to Ass-U-Me don’t you? And do you see wires dangling on tables? Health and safety, huh? I don’t see your point? Please think before you post.

The iPad Pro 10.5 also has USB-C fast charging, which is to say, if you get a true USB-C power block (I have the Anker one listed in the article here), and use a lightning-to-usb-c cable, the iPad Pro 10.5 will charge about as fast as the fastest, well, anything—30% in an hour or something, I dunno I don't keep track, but when I use the Apple iPad charger, it always takes a lot longer.

Thanks for this. It affirms my decision to stick with the iPad-speed wired charging setup I’ve been using for years.

“Wireless” charging might be a nice supplement in the future, but it’s not worth the wholesale switch for my use.

Great article, hi ... new to the forum , been an Apple customer since iPod click wheel (not that long considering some other fans ) .. couple of days ago here in Brisbane Australia , a JB Hifi store staff actually talked me out of getting the USB C power brick and cable ... exactly for the reason why 12W charger is the best value in terms of cost ... I was unaware about the 15w limit on wired charging for the X at the time.. I was surprised to not see one article about it ... until this comprehensive review now .

I did have a question: any research out there on a good fast charge power bank (Apple approved ?) ? I realise the x battery isn’t as powerful as the 6plus I’ve been used to for past 3 yrs.

Looking for a fast portable charger.

Cheers !

Why do people care so much? As long as it charges overnight I’m happy, I can put it on my old Nokia wireless charger and I’m up to 90 percent within a hour or so.... suits me fine.

In your analog, said cafe would also have to provde the charging cable. I certainly do not carry power cables everyhere I go.

I think it will take time for ubiquity, but Apple's intertia tends to get it done, for better or for worse (usually better). Look at contactless payments. We have had them for half a decade, and Apple has given them to us for going three years now, but they are finally nearly everywhere. As of a few days ago I can even deposit and withdraw from my Bank ATM without a card. I can see us going a similar direction with wireless charging pads built into various suyrfaces for convenience.

Fast charging is of value when we are not talking overnight. Say my battery is at 10% at the end of the work day and I am about to go out. Handy to have the info here as to what is my best means of getting the most power back into my phone. Also a lovely comparison for those conscious of their expenses.

I’ve been using 12watt chargers since the iPhone 6 Plus. The USB ports in my vehicles also appear to be of the 10-12watt variant based on how fast my phones charge. This article confirms what I was already thinking. Now a whole lot of difference between using a 12watt charger vs USB-C. Especially since I have several of them around.

Good article. It is a pity they only include the 5W charger with the new iPhone, but if you own an iPad you can use its charger and is quite good.
To be honest I don't really care about fast charging, it isn't something I need every day and I'm a little bit concerned about battery health. Since I got my 8+ I've been using wireless charging all the time, I think I plug in the lighting charger once or twice a week, no more than that.

I imagine wireless charging must impress those who have only used iPhones. However, the "fast charging" on the iPhone X is a joke compared to the fast charging on flagship Samsung devices. It's not even close.

It must be a good joke then:
