I'm guessing that scratches on the back will be more visible on the black than on the white. At the same time, I've heard that the black coating on the stainless steel frame is harder to scratch. That said, I agree with Nik - I think it's awesome to be able to get the white version with a black front. It's always been better to frame the screen in black, in my opinion.
the back is glass

I have a series 2 Apple Watch in the stainless steal and also hope that it perfectly matches on iPhone x in silver, which looks almost white.
idk y apples calling the phone silver, I guess the edges r silver, but the glass has a white finish under it. if u think ur gonna get a silver phone ur gonna be very disappointed. the phone is 100% white under the glass.

Yes I’m aware the back is almost white which is what I’d prefer. The bezel will probably stainless steel.

How have these held up scratch wise over a year and which is preferable and why?

Well it turns out that the black iPhone X is not as easily scratched as the white X. I see many scratched white X. The black one holds up pretty good.

Scratches can be buffed out on the silver, but are permanent on the black

Space grey doesn't scratch as easily, but you can make the silver one look brand new with steel polish. Can't do that with space grey

I have space grey but it seems like everyone has that model. I really think the stainless steel looks sharp and wish I had gone with that colour in hindsight

No scratches on the steel though. Back glass and front glass have the surface scratches but nothing on the steel
