I guessing that the IR projection system is a power hog? I thought OLED was power efficient compared to LEDs. Either that or, the phone can last a day and a half between charges, which doesn’t sound like Apple.
Also, I suppose they could have the A11... turned up to 11.

I'm not so sure about IR projection being a power hog. The X has a 49% bigger battery than the 8 and claims a 50% longer battery time for audio playback and talk time. If the FaceID stuff was a power hog I would expect it to drain away some of the audio playback time at least (it's possible that for talk time the phone is against the face so the FaceID would be disabled by the proximity sensor but for audio lying on a desk or something I would think FaceID would be active).

I do think it must be down to the screen. A leap from 4.7" to 5.8" is significant and OLED only gets really efficient compared to LCD when it is mostly dark, when it is displaying non-black colours it still has to light up its own pixels. Also, the fact that this 50% bigger battery delivers zero increase in video playback or internet usage time again makes me think that the screen is the power hog.

The silver one looks better out of the two colours revealed.
I've opted for the black version of every iPhone to date. Never been a question. This has been the first that I'm seriously torn. The silver looks really crisp. Almost white. Stormtroopery. Especially on this device that doesn't offer the white forehead/chin of the standard silver-backed variant. But the black... so Lord Vader. #preordercoinflip

don't know about "$1200", but at $999 they will be hard to find for sure.
Once you're at $1,000, what's another $200 for a device with 3x the storage?
That said, $1k is ***** crazy. o_O

So Apple.
Mean on RAM as always.

Don’t tell me more RAM is no use.
For one, it’s more future-proof.

3GB for iPhone 8 and 4GB for 8 Plus and iPhone X would be much more user friendly.

So fed up with the pricing and meager RAM of Tim Cook.
More “user friendly”? What does that even mean. The OS is built with this amount in mind. Adding more just to fill out a spec sheet or satisfy some users inferiority complex is a waste of money, space and battery. As for future proofing, so what? They will run great for their 2-3 year life frame. Beyond that, the SoC will be struggling to keep up. RAM will be the least of the issues.
Don't worry so much about a number. Worry about the device in actual usage when determining how “user friendly” a device is.

Sounds pretty good, but we don’t know how batrery hunger is the TrueDepth camera systeam and Face ID.
I've wondered what these always-on AR machines will ask of our batteries.
If AR is THE next thing, there better be some unexpected and major breakthrough in battery tech.
Maybe the glass back of the XI will be solar panels. Or kinetically charged through touch.

Someone correct me if I am misremembering, but Apple didn't show off the internals of the X during the keynote, right? On Apple's website, pictures of the iPhone X's internals (namely the section about the A11 chip) strategically fade to black, hiding the internal design.

Is this intentional for some reason? If there is indeed an L-shaped battery, I'm surprised Apple didn't show it off.

I've had a Black/Space Gray iPhone since the 4. This is the first year I'm tempted to get the Silver.

This is coming from someone who just had to put iPhone X in their signature already, even though it's not out... and felt the need to specify the size of their iPhone screen...

Is Apple getting any better with battery longevity?

My 6s would only hold a charge for half a day at best, after a year, and--after that battery was replaced (and it's now a year after that replacement)--I'm back to half a day at best.

And $100 for tax. $85 for a charging mat. Make that two at$170. Now you are at$1600. Eek!

Or just $674.44

12 months @ 47.87 = 574.44 (Verizon iPhone Upgrade Program)
Charging pad = $60 (Belkin + Mophie are this price @ Apple Store)
Case = $40 (If I want to splurge on an Apple leather case, otherwise could be $10)

The phone is $1150, not $999 - if you want 256GB vs. 64GB storage. Also AppleCare+ or whatever they call it is now $200. So the phone is $1350. Before tax. And a case that is thin enough for wireless charging.

Now thats something worth waiting for
What is? You get more battery life if coming from a 4.7” and less of coming from a 5.5”. The speed is likely identical to the iPhone 8 Plus including the RAM. Nothing special here

4.7” to 5.8” and far more pixels and you think it’s efficiency gains would outweigh the increase in power demand?

Still curious why we have iPhone 8 and 10 this year. What will next year’s models be? Will they skip 9 and go straight to 11?

8 is a lucky number in a good chunk of Asia, including China (Remember the olympics in '08? Began on 8/8/08 at 8:08 PM). Subsequently, this is probably the last model of the LCD, or the last set-next year would be iPhone 8S if such a thing would exist.

Hence why Apple is in a rush to get for it. It's the lucky iphone.

How do you get a larger battery than the iPhone 8 Plus in a smaller phone?
It must be because the OLED display is thinner. Allowing a thicker battery.

I was wondering that too. The X isn't that much bigger than the 8, but a 40% bigger battery! My wife's 7 will go a full day with no problem... this could possibly go 2.

Everything is a trade off in computing. More ram that will likely not be used during the life of the device (sorry you don't want to hear that but its true) also means less battery life, more expensive, and potentially means a thicker phone.

iOS is incredibly good at using memory resources efficiently. 3gb really is plenty.

But you don't get the satisfaction of having spent more than anyone else on a new style phone. Seems like a great buy for the 8plus that it gets the same specs as the new flagship X.

Would be really cool if with this battery Apple ushers in new "two day battery".

$1000 is a lot of money, but this device will be very sought after, could be resold to a large premium if not unboxed and will keep an enormous value in the first year.

I think the original $1200 comment was talking about scalpers and the tons of Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace hustlers (or KSL Classifieds here in UT) that are bound to pop up. People about to max out their credit cards to make some extra dough. Curious to see if they sell...

I actually expect them to be priced at $1400 and up once the media and websites starts hyping up the shortages.

I fully expect the ads to end like this though: "Why wait 3 months when you can buy it now! Cash only, no PayPal, and no I won't ship to your Nigerian cousin. Price is firm, no lowballers...I know what I have for sale"

Why stop there? Might as well ask for 6 or 8 gb of ram while you are at it. ;)
