This definitely seems to be a real issue. I was walking into work this morning typing a message and noticed the keyboard was slow and not responsive to some touches and it was only like 40 degrees. I didnt really think much about it until reading this thread.

Did you try taking off your gloves? :)

Seriously though, this has me concerned. I live in Cleveland which gets wicked cold as well

Ooh. Can we get one of you where your phone is really THAT cold to touch your tongue onto the stainless steel edge and see if it sticks?

(please make sure you have a trusty friend in tow that can upload the video to youtube) :D

iPhoneX - tongue-gate!!!

I can just hear Steve now - "You're licking it wrong!!!" :D

Edit: Ok, ok, it really was THAT much funnier in my head, really! :)

Hi,

I have a space gray 256gb iPhone X and I really like the phone, except...

I live in Finland and here is cold (-30-5°C) about 6 to 7 months in a year. Yesterday I noticed that when I'm outside and temperature hits about -1°C (~30°F) my iPhone X's display becomes working incorrectly. Some touches aren't recognized and some are not accurate at all. Problem solves itself after about 3-5 minutes of use, or when I go back indoors.

This is driving me crazy. Anyone else having this kind of problem with the phone?

I have this problem. I live in Toronto and was doing this the first day after I got it. It was 3 Celsius. It has not been fixed over time even after a restore. I’ve spoken to Apple on the phone and they say to take it to the Genius Bar to get it looked at. Heading there tonight! Will let you know what happens.

Wintergate.

Jokes aside if it really stops working at around zero Celsius this is going to be big news, and rightfully so.

so for those of you who upgraded from previous iPhones, is this a change? Did the older LCD panels work better in the cold?

I wonder if the accelerated 120 Hz touch input might have something to do with it.

For those people that are experiencing the cold problem, how long are you exposing the phone to the cold weather before it becomes unresponsive or slow? I live in Minneapolis and it will be in the teens for the next several days. I will go outside and give it a test.

I will set my phone outside on the front porch for a specific duration of time and see how it performs.

Or, better yet, I’ll place it in my freezer for a duration of time and then take it outside. Everyone can test their phone this way.

No one in the world with an X can test in really cold climate to see if it works or not right now this time of year???

Oh, c'mon. iPhone 7 has exactly same specs and the screen works on -1-5°C where iPhone X is struggling.

My wife’s 6S has issues in those temps. If she is out hunting long enough and the phone temp drops to the environment temp it acts up. Not sure if she gets the thermometer pic like I do when it overheats in the sun. She just always said it wouldn’t work and she spent more time focusing on nature.

I hate the cold so I’m never out in those temps if I can help it. So I don’t have first hand experience with it. When I plow the driveway I’m wearing some heavy clothing and my phone is in a warm pocket playing a podcast.

Ok so I put mine in the freezer, 0 degrees F for half an hour. Took it out and a thin layer of ice built up on the screen. Face ID didn’t respond. Wiped ice off of the sensors and now it unlocked. Even with ice on the screen everything worked perfectly!! Wiped off all the ice still perfect. I did notice that no signal in the freezer will really drain the battery.

I think “Coldgate” is overblown. Loving my X.

Wow thanks for doing something in the name of science!

Would u mind doing the opposite, or somewhere in between

Keep it in the freezer for like 5 minutes or whatever just so its really cold to touch, no thin layer of ice stuff, and stick ur hand in the freezer for a couple minutes so u have a realistic cold hand and cold screen test?

Thin layer of ice doesnt seem that realistic lol

I really wouldn't be putting my phone in the freezer. They're engineered to survive all kinds of abuse, but that doesn't mean it's smart to do it to your personal device (not unless you're a youtuber that's getting paid to do it).

It's -1(C) outside here at the moment...methinks I'll go outside and play some Sudoku.

From iPhone X tech specs:

This happened to me at 40. I had to touch very hard to type.

I used it continuously from frozen until it warmed up in my hands. Worked perfectly. Still using it now. That should cover the whole range.

I just dont think thats a realistic test thats all,

An inherent part of being outside in the cold is also having cold hands,

Ok, I'm a dumbass for not getting a toque first...but about 10 minutes outside at -1C (30F) and the screen was fine.

Felt a lot colder than -1....but I think that's the lack of a hat (shaved head), plus I donated blood this afternoon. :)

Absolutely no detrimental effects. FaceID had no hiccups with the lack of lighting in the parking lot.
