Interesting. It has been between -10 C and -20 C here since I got my X on November 3 (indeed we got a huge snowfall that day) and I have not had issues with my screen or it not working outside. My X even arrived to me really cold after being in a Canada Post truck likely all morning or more, and I had no issues.

Mine happened on lunch break from work. My car was warmed up so the phone went from my warm work 60 feet to my warm car. I drove to the gas station and went in and got a soda. On my parking lot walk back to my car I sent my husband a text in which it typed 5 words and then the letters wouldn’t register. Phone shouldn’t be cold and my hands wouldn’t have been cold. It’s 20 degrees.
However. I spend very little time outside and I’m not totally concerned about it.

I’ve had this happen to me a few times now...I live in Winterpeg I mean Winnipeg. It seems to only respond to about 25% of touches as soon as I am outside leaving work. But then as I keep using it it works fine...so I’m thinking it’s the initial temperature change that affects it? Maybe even condensation on the screen?

I sometimes get an issue where it’s not responding well when typing for a few seconds then goes away. I first noticed it outside when it was about 45 but then today it happened inside when it was close to 70. I think it’s a bug.

For those people that are experiencing the cold problem, how long are you exposing the phone to the cold weather before it becomes unresponsive or slow? I live in Minneapolis and it will be in the teens for the next several days. I will go outside and give it a test.

I will set my phone outside on the front porch for a specific duration of time and see how it performs.

Or, better yet, I’ll place it in my freezer for a duration of time and then take it outside. Everyone can test their phone this way.

Everythingapplepro literally froze his, broke it out of the ice and it worked fine. No idea what these people are talking about. It was -35

Saw that too but am having the same problem and its -1/-2 degrees celcius here. Went to the apple store and they dismissed the issue.

Woah! I was having the intermittent touch-screen unresponsiveness and inability to type fast earlier. Now that I think about it, I was outside in the cold each time that happened!

I do enjoy the people saying this isn’t a problem because it hasn’t happened to them even after multiple people have shared their experience of it happening lol

I didn’t say it wasn’t a problem. Just said it was interesting and shared my own experiences in the cold (where it was not a problem). Which is not the same as saying “you are full of lies and this did not happen”.

Just get this...

That’s how I figured it out as well. Very weird. Hopefully Macrumors will write an article to bring attention to the problem.
Coldgate incoming?

Colgate... lol

The only effect after being the in cold would be condensation affecting sensors for TouchID or FaceID.

Clearly a defective unit. Exchange it.

Not defective. It is user induced error. Phone a temps it will work and if it gets too cold it will stop. Only way to keep a phone going is to keep it in an inside pocket against the body.

Bet if you get you phone cold soaked and bring it into a warm room, moisture will condense on and in the phone possibly setting off the water indicators.

I have the same exact issue. Except in higher temperatures (4-8 celsius) and it can happen as soon as I step outside. So the phone doesn't even get cold. I'm thinking this will be so much worse when winter comes. It seems especially bad when it's windy.

If it does it as soon as you go out so before the phone has had chance to cool down, how can it be the cold?

Exactly. That's why my theory was that it's the wind. It only seems to be a problem on windy days. But that would be even more ridiculous. It also works intermittently outside. It doesn't lag all the time when it's outside. I'll have to observe more but I think wind is a factor.

Same here, except week 41.

Here’s my logic: if it’s bothering you and you just got it. Exchange it for a brand new in box replacement. Don’t settle for anything else.

Sounds like the X screen is even more susceptible to colder temps. Must be an OLED thing.

Trading it in for another will not help. Sound to me the OLED screen is very temperature sensitive! Wind would cool the screen down even faster.
