I used to have silver only, but this time around it was hard, but I went SG for 3 reasons.

  1. Seamless Experience - I got this phone so I can do Augmented reality. The screen should blend in with the rest of the display and the borders. The silver has shiny stainless steel that really stands out too much.
  2. Camera Bumpout - The silver backing of my past iPhones have a small black circle for the camera, but the iPhone X camera take some up more space and is very black. It stands out too much on the Silver, with the black, it looks more uniform.
  3. Case / Oleophobic Glass - Cases will cover up a fingerprint vulnerable back. Glass that is oleophobic can also help with that.

If you're putting on a case, wouldn't that negate points 1 and 2?

I've flip flopped the last few years between white and black, and this year I was thinking white/silver for my X after enjoying my 8 plus in matte black the past year...

However I ended up going with Space Gray for the X because of 1 very simple reason???

The band on the silver will be a horror show for scratches, even with a case.

That silver mirror finish on the bands have been used on plenty of apple products (ipod, iwatch, etc) and like clockwork the scratches just happen. IMO they should have went with a more matte metalic finish?

Either way I decided to go with the stealthy seamless look of the Space Gray X

Case may not necessarily cover the whole band, especially at the bottom.

2 is not negated at all, Inam calling out the color of the camera bumpout, which is big and black. Having black on the back will help make it blend in better I nstead of having a sleek silver/whitish back with this big black oval in the corner updated OP.

If you have a case on the back covering everything but the black portion of the camera bump then it is negated because that is all you would see regardless of the color of the rest of the back of the phone.

And many cases will cover the bottom of the front as well. In fact I don't understand why anyone would buy a case with the bottom exposed because you'll then have the inevitable scratches and nicks on just the bottom of the steel band (not to mention risking greater damage beyond cosmetic), which is why I won't buy the Apple case and instead opted for the Otterbox Symmetry.

Yep I agree. That silver finish will be vulnerable to daily elements and will scratch easily. I remember the iPods scratching if you so much as looked it.....even with a case on

I like the space grey on this phone and I’ve had that colour on my last two phones. Decided enough was enough though and went for Silver.

So it seems that some people that have ordered white are going to cover it with a black case lol

Silver for me. Have also ordered a translucent white case.
Have had white/silver since the 3G. Also have a white iPad and silver aluminium watch with white band.

But depending on the coating Apple has used for the space grey, it could scratch just as easily and will be a lot more obvious. At least the SS can be polished.

Apple has never been good with durable coatings in my opinion. My fear is that the steel on the space gray would have chipped or scratched exposing the silver steel underneath anyway. None of the dark aluminum colors have held up well in my experience. The space black Apple Watch does a pretty good job, but the iPhone X uses a different process for its coating.

This. Apple had to use a special process to coat the SS in the space gray color, and achieving gold was so challenging they delayed that color indefinitely. Anything deeper than a superficial scratch on the sides of the space gray will reveal the silvery SS beneath. Whereas scratches on the silver model can be simply buffed out.

This is coming from the owner of a jet black 7+ whose corner got dinged enough to show the metal beneath. Not to mention the fingerprint nightmare that the JB is. A lovely thing to look at right after I've polished it (and if you're not close enough to see all the "micro abrasions"), but that thing shows fingerprints like nobody's business.

A friend has a Space Gray MacBook Pro for over a year now, no scratches. It’s the same process right?

No, I don't think so. That is anodized aluminum, this is some vapor process (I forget the actual name - people mention it here on the forum) for stainless steel. The jet black 7 uses another process. And the space black stainless steel Apple Watch uses yet another type of process with a dlc (diamond like coating).

Not to mention one is matte and the other is mirror polished.

I will be getting a silver and putting a black dbrand skin on it. When I’m tired of black, silver will be there nice and pretty waiting.

I flip flopped for the first time. I always had the intention of buying silver ever since it was announced. Now I'm seeing that the Space Grey looks so classy and seamless, matches my macbook pro and apple watch, and overall fits the corporate persona over the flashier silver/chrome. Also, I completely forgot about the time that I had a Samsung Galaxy S5 for a little under a year. This is the same color combination as that one, and I remember getting really bored/sick of it pretty fast. I think white is more of a color that girls are drawn to (along with rose gold).

I'm definitely going to go to the Apple store probably on Saturday or Sunday when the rush won't be psychotic and just spend a minute or so with the phones and hopefully just decide right there.

i still cant decide haha... i like the sides of the space grey... but i like the back of the silver haha,....

After going to the store and seeing/feeling both in person, silver wins for me hands down. If they had a gold version though I would’ve 100% bought that

Silver is beautiful ands outstanding color. It is the iPhone X flagship color like jet black for iPhone 7. Space gray is like jet black which is bland and boring as it is nothing special.

I agree. I remember telling people that the Space Grey will be overrated as from the back, it looks exactly like the 8, only with a vertical camera enclosure instead. I was really disappointed, to be honest, in the space grey version. I think they could have done a much much better job. If they did a jet black with silver/chrome enclosure, I wouldn't have even had a second thought.

The black enclosure of the space grey is nice in that when the phone is off everything looks so seamless, but other than that i was very underwhelmed. I'm surprised that something as simple as color made such a huge difference for me to the point where if SG was the only color, I probably wouldn't buy the phone.

Both good options. Ultimately it doesn't matter considering you're likely to put it right in a case.
I have a clear case so it does matter for sure. I can see why people like space grey, I'm just surprised that it was such a popular color choice. When it's clean, new and untouched its very nice. However, the ones I saw in the Apple store had a few fingerprints on it (it gets BAD). After I saw that, i thought it looked absolutely terrible.

Both do. My girlfriends silver showed fingerprints as well. It's bound to happen with glass, just use a case.
