I think even Apple knows they messed up with doing the top bezel cut out like this. But they won't admit.

Sadly it does look a tad odd, but I don't think there's much they can do now (even with a software update) to make it work with the design. Still going to give it a go and buy next month, think I can overlook it 🙂

You can double tap to shrink the video content so it's not notched-out. That's no concern of mine.

What I didn't like was seeing that game demo. On screen elements were clearly seen being cut off. That's not cool.
Yeah that definitely irked me too

Shrinking the video and having a big border on all sides kind of eliminates need for edge to edge display imo.
I don't disagree. Bbut if my choices are to have a notched-out full screen video or a regular rectangle that doesn't fill the whole screen, I'll take the latter.

The majority of my viewing is on my iPhone.

yeah but such content is not meant to be aesthetically immersive more like youtube clips and such content.

I would want to see how bad it is when the screen is zoomed out to fully fit.

Black borders are pretty bad too. But I guess for 16:9 it would just be bottom and top.

We can think about it like this: Ten years from now when we look back at the iPhone X, are we going to think: "what a brilliant design!" OR "what the #### is that notch doing there, what was they thinking?"

That gives us a good answer wether iPhone X with a notch is a good idea...

16:9 does play inside the notch area... see Apple's iPhone X Developer video.

Based on this:

https://developer.apple.com/ios/human-interface-guidelines/overview/iphone-x/

Media should actually not run to the left and right edges of the screen when in portrait or landscape mode. I think Apple just "zoomed in" (double tapped) on the video they showed during the demo.

They should not had done that when non-stretched was an option.

Why can't they make the iPhone X slightly taller to get rid of that screen notch? Why didn't Apple make it like that. Idk, I only work at mcdonalds so I don't know the engineering behind it but curious

That would be equally unaesthetic and un-proportional.

Before this it was equal size bezels on top and bottom. that was ok because it has symmetry.

If it only had a slab on top it would lose its balance

Then you have a taller phone, still with a notch to house the sensors and equipment.

I don't understand why the X has different screen aspect ratios. No one cares that the aspect ratio of the device (NOT screen) is different than the 8 or 8+, but changing screen aspect ratio to allow for less viewing space seems stupid.
