It doesn't look as bad as the pic posted earlier.

You mean you can double tap to scale the video? That is like.. usual!

I really don't know why people went bananas about the notch when watching videos. Like you can not double tap to scale it.

That would be equally unaesthetic and un-proportional.

Before this it was equal size bezels on top and bottom. that was ok because it has symmetry.

If it only had a slab on top it would lose its balance
and you think the notch makes things look proportionate? Give me a damn break. Its horrible design. The software should just make the top black for everything. Give a small black bar on the bottom for the bottom thingie so its PROPORTIONATE.
Right now the notch is the least proportionate phone ever in an iPhone.

here's hoping they'll gives us some options how to handle the notch with videos...

Seeing how Samsung already did a great job with their screen not having a notch with the cameras. I still cannot fathom how Apple would have let the phone ship with that notch. I feel like its totally out of the norm of Apple's aesthetics. [face palm emoji]

samsung doesnt have all of those sensors on the front of the phone. im sure if apple could have fit them somewhere else they would have. how about the essential phone with the camera in the middle of the screen

Based on this:

https://developer.apple.com/ios/human-interface-guidelines/overview/iphone-x/

Media should actually not run to the left and right edges of the screen when in portrait or landscape mode. I think Apple just "zoomed in" (double tapped) on the video they showed during the demo.

This was the most interesting instruction in there. DO NOT HIDE THE NOTCH!!

>>Don't mask or call special attention to key display features. Don't attempt to hide the device's rounded corners, sensor housing, or indicator for accessing the Home screen by placing black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Don't use visual adornments like brackets, bezels, shapes, or instructional text to call special attention to these areas either.<<

It's definitely distracting, but you can scale it back. I hope Apple will give us options on how to deal with the notch.

The user experience, which used to the central point of all of Apples hardware and software, has taken a backseat to marketable gimmicks and has done for some time now. More and more people are starting to realise this, and I think with the iPhone X, it's now more apparent to the masses than ever before. Everything about the iPhone X looks cumbersome as hell, from the notch, to the aspect ratio, to FaceID, to the reworking of a whole bunch of frequently used iOS gestures, to the reworking of iOS to have a weird wasted space at the top and bottom of the screen. I can just picture it now, a poor iPhone X user fumbling around, with headphone dongles hanging from their phone, trying to unlock their phone with FaceID and get to the Control Centre in the upper right corner with one hand, while an AirPod drops out of an ear onto the pavement.

I spit my coffee out reading this. Nice. You painted a pretty funny picture there.

Unfortunately, it's all too true.

I think even Apple knows they messed up with doing the top bezel cut out like this. But they won't admit.

They were shooting for the diagonal screen size and being able to claim "edge to edge." I am not a fan. Hopefully they will see the error of their ways next year and not do the notch.

No doubt the X will sell out and people will buy in droves. My cousin is one of those people, buying it solely due to the fact that it has an OLED screen. I have completely written off the X. My 2017 phone decision has come down to either the iPhone 8 or Pixel 2. Bezels suck, but not at all deal breakers.

It's seems it's actual bezels vs software bezels. With the notch and the home slide bar, the bezels are back but in electronic form. Usable screen size should be the metric consumers focus on, not the diagonal measurement for the X. Sure apps can take up the whole screen but I think many will use some sort of letterboxing to get rid of the notch and the rounded bottom to make the overall experience better.

Apple is measuring the screen from rounded corner to rounded corner, this is a bit misleading. But hey, I would do the same thing if I was in apple marketing.

The only forgiving aspect about this is that we don't watch full entertainment on phones. Thats more iPad and up territory.

I thought the clips would play in a 16:9 area INSIDE of the notch area. Assuming such a option exists.

But if not...

crazy breach of basic aesthetics principles.

The time, battery indicator etc look horrible either side of the notch too

At least they're not taking up app space. They have their own areas separate from the main screen area.

That's the way I think of it.

I don't consider the notch to be dipping down into the screen. I consider the areas on either side of the notch to be extra screens. Bonus areas.

My worst fears have come true.
What came true?

Looking at those pictures..it almost got me to think there were bullet holes on those phones. LOL.

It's simple...I will not buy the ipX as long as it remains this way.

If Apple fixes this...terrific.

If they don't, I will stick with one of their other phones.

First of all, all iPhone aren't MEANT to watch Full Movies like for 2 hours as it causes EYESSTRAIN, Second That is why they make an four different size of iPad because iPads are 4 to 10 times bigger than iPhones.. and better for watching movies and gaming. Also, most people DON'T watches full lengthy videos even iPhone X or iPhone Plus models are TOO SMALL, even you compared it to iPad Mini if you asked me.

iPhones Are made to Text, Take Selfies, and Take Calls.

If you want to watch Movies, then Buy a Tablet or iPad or even Macbook or laptop or go watch it on television they are more bigger and better

Funny you say that, back when I was using an iPod Touch, I would always use it to watch full movies for like 4 hours on long trips.
